Hi All,

My Onkyo TX-SR608's (bought from US) remote controller is not working from day one I got it in India. Probably the baggage handling done the job. I have given it to Onkyo service here in Bangalore and also contacted the Chennai Onkyo. Both did not take up servicing. They touch only those with warranty. I have also contacted the US onkyo and they haven't replied for about a week now. So I guess I will have to buy one now. A new one costs about 23$. Should I buy the Onkyo remote or a universal programmable remote which can replace all my other remotes as well along with the dead Onkyo one?

Thanks!
Anish

Hi,

just a basic suggestion. See if you can take the remote apart, clean it and put it back. Most times just one or more buttons are depressed from the keypad inside and hence the remote may not be working because of baggage handling. Since anyway you have no choice for service or replacement why not try this. May work. I hope this suggestion helps!

Cheers

PS: I used to sell Onkyo systems and have fixed quite a few remotes similarly! (Disclaimer!!! from any lawsuits!) And very careful while taking it apart, some of them have screws and some of them have small latches on the sides, so take your time to do it.

Thanks Vinod!

I in deed tried that the moment I got it back at home :-) opened and put it back.

But not worked out. By the way, the manual mentions that when you press the button in the remote and especially with certain combinations like [Reciever] + [Setup] the LED on top of the remote blinks. Nothing like that happened what so ever combinations I tried. So my best guess is this guy is not going to come back alive. Not either sure if any technician can rectify the issues with these small boards.

Hi Alexanish,

A few things to try (I am sure you have tried it but still thought better to tell you than not to):

1) Check with some other batteries
2) When you open the remote and take out the PCB, clean it with some spirit using a old toothbrush, taking care not to leave any scratch marks on the PCB, let it dry completely and put it back again
3) Take the remote to SP Road, I am sure someone can fix it or sell you the same duplicate remote, don't leave the remote there!
4) Of course order it from websites or contact Onkyo or Lokesh at Techlok, I am sure he may have a workable solution as he has contacts in Onkyo and was their Manager for the Indian region
5) If someone from this forum or relative is visiting the US, you can ask them it bring it to you
6) These remotes usually have only 1 or 2 ICS and carbon problems as a techie told me, so it should be easily fixable in the right hands

Cheers

Thanks again Vinod!

I have tried the 1st one with out success.

I will try the 2nd one soon.

Third one is another possibility though thinking about reaching/parking/congestion in SP road ah... but I will give a try.

What is Lokesh's contact number? or location?

The last is most easy one I believe among these - get a new one :-)

But again at this point I have another option to go for a similar priced universal one an program it to do all my gadget controlling.

But I will still give a chance to the rest of the ideas you had put forward.

To test whether the IR LED works, point the remote to your mobile phone camera and press any key. If you can see white light in the camera then the LED is working fine. (You could create a night vision camera using this technique. Just connect a bunch of IR LEDS to a power supply and place it in a dark room. Now turn your camera on and see how the night vision works!)
