Panasonic "U" series Plasma - Your comments Pls.

hi, long time since I have posted here

i had been to panasonic brand shop bangalore (koramangala) today,

checked out 46 " U series (so called full HD) and 42" V series

first he showed me the U series 46 incher from a bluray source, i was pretty impressed, i thought the black levels of this TV and resolution are good compared to an LCD, he did not have an unpacked V series, so I had made up my mind on going for it, but then the salesperson asked me would i like to see V series demo, i gladly agreed, he took a packed straight out of the box of 42" V series TV and played it to me from a bluray source, it was simply mindblowing

i did a side by side comparison of U series 46" and 42" V series

U series: blacks are not deep,

V series: super blacks, crisper pictures

mind you 42" V series = 46" U series pricewise

I am completely sold out on V series

i think that 900 vs 1080 lines confusion is justified, in that V series is better,
if the screen size is not an issue go for the V series, you will not regret it

i feel you should check it out personally and then decide

just my 2 cents

cheers

I want to know your opinions on Panasonic "U" series plasma. I would like to consider this series while making my purchase soon. Pls. give your inputs for 50 inch & compare with LG PK550

Raju, I compared the X20, U20 & V20 for over an hour in the local Panasonic brand store. IMO, there is practically no difference between the X20 and U20. I tested with several HD clips and neither me nor my dad could notice any difference. Infact, my dad felt that the blacks were better in the X20.

Now, the V20 - that is in a different class altogether. The picture was clearly superior and had better detail. If you can afford it, then go for the V20, else stick with the X20. The U20 is neither here nor there.

The LG PK550 - that was my first interest too, and was tempting at 60K. But thanks to friends at HFV who pointed out the issues with the unit. I dropped it from consideration.

My next interest was the Samsung PS50C550. Unfortunately it was not in stock anywhere in my town and I couldn't demo it. But the general opinion on the forum is that it is best value for a Full-HD 50" plasma on the market today.

I would take you up on the bet if I was the betting type. :) You may believe what you want, but the fact is that last years TH-P50S10S and this years TH-P50U20, even though advertised as FULL HD 1920x1080, do not actually have full 1080 lines with moving pictures. The 'Moving Picture Resolution' of the TH-P50U20 is '900 lines'. The Panasonic 'G', 'V' & 'VT' series are the ones that have 'Moving Picture Resolution' of full 1080 lines.

PS: A lot of low to mid priced LCD TVs advertised as FULL HD, have similiarly less 'moving picture resolution'. It's important to read the specifications more carefully, for Panasonic is one of the few companies that actually states this under the TVs detailed specifications.

Thanks for that bit of information. Did not know that. Now I understand why I couldn't notice any difference between the X20 and U20.

As i am looking for a 50" plasma, can we compare HD ready Panasonic X20 with full HD Samsung C50.

I am sorry, I didn't get a chance to test the Samsung C550, so cannot offer you an opinion about a direct comparison. Purely based on what I read here on the forum, I believe that the Samsung 50C550 is the better TV compared to the X20. There are several users for the C550 here from whom you can get loads of info about tweaking the settings to get maximum performance.

But don't just decide only by the recommendations here. Test both units (side-by-side if possible) with a collection of HD clips - some dark scenes, some fast action, some cartoons etc and make your own impression. Trust your eyes.

Cheers.
