I came across an ad for Philips 40PFL4758 39 Inches Full HD LED Television for Rs. 32872.0. The price is attractive. Philips at one time was a household word for quality. But with almost all manufacturers sourcing components from China, quality is a big issue. Have any forum members had experience with Philips TVs in the past? TKA

Hello Pnreddy,

I had checked the Philips at my local showroom in Thrissur. There were two series on display, the 4700 and the 6900 series. I guess by the 4700 series they mean the same as the model you have posted 40PFL4758 39 inches full HD LED (out here the price after discount is Rs 35,000 :(). My town is very small. I found the picture quite washed out and no amount of adjustments could solve it. So long story short, it is not worth it.

Anyway coming to the point, check the 6900 series out. It unfortunately comes with the built in STB of Videocon, but the picture was superb. MRP 60,990 and discounted price Rs 47,900 out here and I am sure in Hyderabad you can strike a better deal.

I use the same TV in my bedroom and I would say its good for a casual viewing. PQ is not comparable to Sony/Samsung/LG. Well, you get what you pay for :). HD contents looks good.

However I also found the same annoying issue of picture getting "washed" away. For me the picture gets "washed" away (too much brightness on the screen) the moment I move towards left or right of the TV (around 20 degrees viewing angle on either side). However it works for me as we watch it sitting/lying on the bed and I placed the TV so that I get an okay picture.

Would NOT recommend as a primary TV.

Hi

Here are a few links you can go through which give you the basic difference between a LCD LED and Plasma TVs

Can LED LCD look as good as plasma? | TV and Home Theater - CNET Reviews

Hard fact is that typically these TVs last for 3-5 years depending on the components used by companies....this means you need to look out for a TV which can the best performance, warranty and features....I did a good 2 months research over the internet reading various reviews complaints feedbacks etc.

Finally after extensive window shopping at Vijay Sales / Croma / E Zone / Reliance Digital I settled for the Toshiba PU series which has 3 years warranty and has all the features I would like in a TV. I got it almost 25% cheaper than actual MRP from my local dealer with same warranty...

Hope this helps

Sray away from Philips.. now it is worse than chinese brand with pathetic service ..and sometimes cheating in service..... read my past expereinces where GM I knew did not bother to help.. such apathy .. and they tried to cheat member spiro in service.... no wonder the company wound up - they deserve that..

Bought this model 40PFL4758 yesterday in 35800~ with 2 year extension of warranty from Croma Surat. Picture quality looks fine, sound is not that good, u have to output it with 5.1.
VGA port is a plus point. Cant say anything about durability.

Congrats!! Enjoy it!
Sound - well for any flat panel you should not expect any! Flat panel is only for video not audio!!! For a good sound quality AVR + Speakers a must. Or at the least an Active Speaker would be fine.

But major disappointment is that, There is no audio output when you play anything from USB mean even if you have home theatre...you have to deal with shitty tv speakers.
There is audio out with hdmi input. now looking for return policy of croma !!

I tend to differ from what you have said i bought the Toshiba 39P2305 Its PQ & Sound both are good. The sound quality has amazed me, so there are exceptions in the TV industry

@Tijokjoy...i congratulate for your decision because in philips 40PFL4758 there is NO HEADPHONE JACK mean no audio output when playing from usb. See this manual , in 22" it is available not in 40". Whats the logic behind it. i am irritated.

I use the following adapter to get audio from the RCA audio line out and connect to my wireless headphone input.

Bandridge Professional Grade Audio Extension Cable: Amazon.in: Electronics

I bought this from Online Shopping Store | Buy Online: Mobiles Phone, Computers, Tablets Pc, Home Appliances | Lowest Price shop in India at ShopClues though.

However, the most important thing to note is that the volume control in TV has NO effect on the output from the RCA audio line out. Actually I wanted it exactly this way as when I watch TV in the night, I don't want any sound from TV speaker. So I keep the TV volume to 0 and then adjust the volume in my wireless headphone.

@john I am already using that for audio o/p when playing through HDMI. But there is no provision for o/p at all for USB music/movie.

I bought the 40PFL4758 from Croma store in Bangalore for 28K last Saturday with 1 year warranty. If you still have the TV wanted to check if you have connected any 5.1 system to it or not? If yes, could you share the details. Yesterday I tried playing a Full HD Movie (.mkv extension) using my pen drive but there was no sound from the TV speakers. I'm a bit concerned.

Also, wanted to know what is the recommended mounting height for the TV from ground level if it is placed in the living room and the viewing distance from the sofa is around 10 feet.
