Recently when I was in Mumbai, My Friend's father showed me his Philips HiFi Electronic 242 turntable.
The player has been lying unused for a lot of years and needs service. A quick check reveals that the belt needs replacing and system power light comes ON when switched on. I did not get an opportunity to check further.

The owner would like to get the TT serviced and bring it out of its hibernation. Please suggest an experienced and reliable service technician.. Preferably close to Colaba.
Many Thanks in advance :)

The TT is in a good condition cosmetically and the plinth is fairly weighted. The TT is spring mounted onto the plinth and should sound pretty good... Can't wait to hear it sing.

Hi,

Tell your friend to take it to Pandurang- 9619816225. He's at Opera House. Its not very far from Colaba. He's a Philips expert. He'll fix it. All the best :)

Thanks much, VinylShakti.
Do you or anyone you know have any first hand experience with Pandurang?

have a decent experience , of late he is taking some time

the shop he works is and was official philips showroom for many many years

but again do you have other option?

I think same TT (Philips GA242) is with our friend FM 'rohitmusic'. Its good TT and having 2 belts with isolated suspended motor.

It mostly needs cleaning power on, 33/45 rpm switch from inside and adjust speed with dedicated presets. Get basic MM cart like Audio Technica AT95E, will sing nicely.

That's all.

HelloAjit. I recently got my amp repaired by sanjay raut from mahim. He comes across as a professional but seems to be expensive. He has offered to look at a friend's garrard 2025t that been lying around at my place.

Yes, the same TT, which sings flawlessly thanks to Omji, for his magical Midas touch on the servicing of the TT ;)

It is a very nice TT that does its job faithfully.

I must say that that TT looks pristine. After a proper service it should look and sound as good as new.

Yes, the TT is in very good condition. If only the power cable had not left the indent/mark on the dust cover, it would have been flawless!

Thanks Om! I may have been able to perform the suggested basic cleaning... However, the TT is not with me. I am glad to hear your opinion that this is a good TT to have.. I hope I get to hear it play soon.

Thanks Kuks1. Please share Sanjay's contact details.
I would advise the owner to avoid expensive service as in my opinion the TT is in a good shape and needs only basic maintenance to bring into action. The call however will be the owners.. And he will be happy to have a choice of services.. So thanks again :)

I'm glad the TT is working out well for you rohit.. :)
I only saw a small square belt whish goes around the motor pulley.. It was stretched out and needs replacing..
It its not too much trouble, can you please take a picture of your TT after removing the platter and post it? I'm curious about the second belt.. Wish I'd had more time to look at the TT.. It was literally touch and go.
Thanks.

If I remember correctly then motor is facing downwards - one belt is from motor to pulley (2-3" away from motor) and another belt is from pulley to central part of main platter's plastic base.

Hope this helps, if need any more info please let us know :)
cheers!

I could see this belt is stretched out and needs repair. My quick check revealed that the brass pulley did not rotate when powered on so probably the hidden smaller belt between the pulley and motor is missing/broken.
Thanks for posting the photo :)
Cheers!

Rohit, Om, where did you guys get the set of belts for Rohit's player?

Now I'm not thinking if I should persuade the owner to let me have a go at replacing the belts, deoxing and regreasing first.. :D
