OK people I'm planning to take a Plasma 42" by air. The TV will be new in its original box packing. I have successfully transported an LCD TV by air before, but am having some apprehension about plasma because of its weight, and because many people have said that plasmas should ONLY be transported upright and never left on its side. I have no problem with following instructions to transport the TV upright, but the ground crew handling loading/unloading might not be so careful about following instructions.
So, my question is, is there still risk of damage even when product is in its original packing? Has anyone had any experience transporting plasma by air?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Shredder, as I've told you in my thread one of my friend have done this without any issue(Bangalore - Pune). I guess it should be ok and I hope there is no flight hopping involved in this trip? When I took my TV(LCD) the people at Spicejet (Bangalore) have taken the TV through a different route altogether and they assured me that they'll properly take care of it. But do keep in mind that they will not take responsibility to any kind of damage that may happen during transit.

Shred: Pls take insurance for travel for the TV. I dont know if we can take insurance like that but check around. Dont take any chance for the same.

I have a LG 50PK550 so LG told me, if I wanted to shift, I have to pay 550 bucks, and they will come and pack it. Once transported another LG team will come unpack and install. Because of the "ground crew" factor, I think it's better to move the tv via movers and packers. LCd's are less hassle prone during shifting owing to lower weight and lack of glass

Well if LG assures peace of mind/insurance of transport for 550Rs thats pretty good I say... :clapping:

1. The airline people may put it horizontally.
2. The cargo hold is generally not pressurized, so it may cause problems at high altitudes.
3. The combination of these can be even worse.

I would advise ground transportation.

Correct? It's Plasma!!

OK thanks to all for their inputs. Already got the TV and will be taking it with me in a day or two. Will let you know how it pans out.

Your best bet is a courier. Too risky transporting yourself. Also you can be pretty sure the ground crew will not keep it upright and secure (both are required). All it takes is one heavy objects to fall on it .... for the kind of money you ahve invested in this get peace of mind with a courier and a small cash.

Again thanks to one and all for your valuable inputs and suggestions. I finally took the plunge and took the Plasma TV with me by air. Reached and assembled it with fingers crossed and it works. No problemo whatsoever:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: except that when switching on and off the TV makes a slight sound. (Someone please confirm that this is normal) TV works fine. Special vote of thanks to Konfused who gave a lot of encouragement. .....and I guess plasmas are not the delicate darlings they are trumped up to be.
Will be starting a new thread soon to give a comparative review of LCD vs plasma from my point of view (since I now own both technologies). Someone ring that bell:clapping:

That is totally normal unless it says any name while turning on or off :D. Glad it arrived safely... Enjoy the new toy ....

Awesome, that's a great news. Actually after deciding to take my TV by air I was cursing myself for not getting the plasma as I already knew that my friend has shipped their TV without any issue. Wish I had decided to ship by air before buying the TV.
And that sound while switching on is pretty normal. I now can even hear the sound in my mind ;-)

Hey I too can comment on that now he he.. And to be honest I'm kind of impressed with Panasonic LCD. That IPS panel is pretty good.

There is not sufficient evidence to show (other than anecdotes) that there is danger in transporting Plasmas by air. It is preferred not to operate a plasma at high altitudes though
Plasma TV Buying Guide: Plasma TVs at high altitude

When the TV is switched on , the electricity stimulates the phosphors (not directly but through a series of actions) and make them glow.
A lot of other things happen and then cause resistance in the pixels and an electrical discharge are made across the electrodes. Once this occurs, the rare gases become ionized, creating plasma.

I didn't paste this to condescend and explain workings of a plasma :) but rather to emphasize that there needn't be too much concern over an inactive plasma being shipped by air.

Just make sure that you use a lot of PU foam (in the form of bars) along with the original packaging. The point is to make a protective glove around the plasma- polystyrene peanuts or any other form of "thermocol" is not advocated since they can bread down and get into the set.

BTW - I personally know of two sets that were brought as luggage from Middle East/US , by air, that are in great condition.

Good luck with your move.

@Shredder - OOPS - missed your earlier comment that you had already moved

Hey guys i wanted to know if it is safe to transport a 42inch plasma tv from qatar/dubai to goa??? i read that plasma tvs are more fragile due to their weight, glass screen. It is not recommended to transport a plasma tv by air due to the way baggage handlers handle the tv(very bad in India!!).It is a hit or miss with a plasma, either the screen breaks, will only come to know when you power it on or if your very lucky and god is kind to you then your tv will be fine!!..guys is it worth the risk to bring a plasma tv by air?? or should i just go and get a lcd/Led tv!!(ove the way plasma tvs handle motion, gives much better picture when viewing SD as compared to Led tvs!!)

the model i am looking at is the 42st30, it cost about 63k in goa which is above my budget but is much cheaper in the middle east!!

please help this confused soul!!:sad::sad:pls!!
