You have to understand that a Blu-Ray player from companies such as Samsung are meant to be used for playing Blu-Ray discs from particular regions. The fact that they allow you to play media files is a bonus. Secondly as per law, you are NOT supposed to download files and play. Essentially you are supposed to rip the movies yourself and use the ripped copy to watch the movie a few times. The disc becomes a backup.

What the Samsung support guy told you is correct in the strict legal sense. Read the manual to see what file types and sizes are supported. If the file type and size does not match, there is nothing you can do.

If playing media is critical, you should buy a media player.

Cheers

Hi,

Get the WDTV LIVE media player or the Pop-corn hour. Both are good value for money, though the Pop-corn hour is a bit expensive.

Venkat, you are correct but in a different context. If a CD+MP3 player does not play 192 kbps files and plays 128kbps files then will you ask for the source? The issue here is not about ethics of downloaded file. Instead why the player is not playing a 1080p MKV when its claimed by the manufacturer. I think in this situation SAMSUNG should give an answer which is less likely in India. I have had issues with SONY and SAMSUNG in past. No complaints about the products (they are what they ought to be) but the below par people who gives "lectures" about these products. For instance hopefully the sales person in question here does not even know what/why is "region" in digital video discs or what is streaming bit rate for different formats. I don't think they get any meaningful training other than plugging a few cables at the backs. Sorry for being rude but that the reality, ask these guys whats the size of a blu-ray disc and why its is called "blu-ray" you will understand what I mean

Nevertheless, I agree with Venkat in some way

I have learned the hard way - never believe in bonus features, a HV TV is meant for HD quality picture, a Media player is meant for decoding compressed files, a BDP player is meant for spinning BD discs and a 100Mbps router with CAT45 cable is meant for network streaming. All this 5-in-1 features are lucrative but devoid of any substance.

If it is bluray rip 1080p files (popularly mkv files) then it would have encoded with higher ReFrames like 10+ or even 16 to have more quality. But standard bluray profile supports not more than 4 Reframes.

For better player compatibility you may need to look at the file information of these rips before downloading. Laptop/Desktop doesn't have issues with these profiles provided they are suitable to play HD content media files.

Hope this helps...

Are you sure that the codecs of both the files i.e 720p & 1080p are same and still your bluray player is not able to play them.?
I have an LG BD550 it plays all of them irrespective of the resolution except files encoded with x264.
What i would suggest , copy one of your hd movies to a pendrive/hdd and try playing them at a showroom while having a demo for the same.If the player in the showroom succeeds then you can prove it to samsung that the fault is with your particular piece.I'll see if i visit a showroom,i'll try the same and get back.
