I am in for a 2nd TV maybe end of the year or early next and was wondering if (and why) I should go for 3D or not.

I understand its a bit early because except for "some part of Olympics in UK" there is no 3D telecast imminent in the near future and the main source currently is Blue Ray, but all who have purchased a 3D TV until now, how much of 3D content do you actually see? Regularly? Every other day? Once a week? 2-3 times a month? Less often? And what is the content that you see?

Thanks!

I don't think you should buy a 3D display thinking you will be able to watch 3D quite often. As it is, 3d sources are very very less. Most is 3D bluray of movies. That too, you are less likely to watch all of the 3d movies released.

Buy the display mostly for 2d. If it happens to work with 3D, that is just an icing on cake. A good option to watch 3D just in case you feel like it. If buying with the intention of watching 3D mostly, you will be in for a big disappointment after 1 month. The disappointment is not due to 3D performance, but with lack of 3d sources.

Most of the 3d Content are kids movies.

Also what part of olympics is 3d and who is broadcasting it in 3d?

Watching a movie in 3D for a hour is sure to give you headaches. I did buy a 50 incher yesterday and at those sizes there aren't too many non 3d tvs selling

Agree with Manoj. Even I was in such a dilemma couple of months back. Had the option to go for a sony 2d tv or a lg 3d in my budget. Then realized there is hardly many 3d content available to make good use of the extra money/compromise I will be making by buying a 3d tv to fit in my budget. Also I think 3d content is better watched in the theater or on a projector I.e on a really big screen. On 42-46" screens it's no fun. Plus the pain of wearing those cumbersome glasses (and buying extra for others in the house). I am saying this because companies like sharp and toshiba are already fiddling with glass free 3d tv (though insanely expensive as of now). Anyway we will be changing the tv in 5-6 years (give or take a year). So why not wait a little when there will be more 3d content and better tech (and may be at a cheaper price). But looking at it other way- people who want to have the latest tech as and when it comes, all these arguments don't matter.!

+1 here.

I have just purchased a 3D TV and it is yet to be installed. Although too early to tell, I may watch 3D from time to time but on the whole I would expect this to be no more than 1 to 2 days a week initially and maybe 1 day a month after a couple of months. I purchased the ST50 for its PQ and other qualities and not for 3D.

I feel that best 3D content is in cartoons/animation and natural history documentaries. Besides Avatar (a mediocre movie in my opinion on the whole but fantastic effects), I have not enjoyed 3D in any movie I saw later. Maybe Avatar set the barrier too high. For example, Prometheus and The Amazing Spiderman, I felt did not need 3D at all. And to crown it, in The Amazing Spiderman there were hardly any 3D effects. MIB-3 was OK but again would have been just as good without 3d.

Lol guys, headaches were a story 2 years back and if you don't own a 2012 model, you should not say stuff's about headache and there are too many movies in 3d, maybe you guys are not aware about private torrent sites. So headache is just bs plus no movies is kind of bs, don't expect your tv channels to come in 3d.

I beg to differ slightly. 3D technology has not changed much in the last two years - apart from passive 3D being introduced.

However, glasses have improved on the form factor - size, weight, etc. So people who used to find them irritable to wear (especially with those having prescription glasses) have a reason to cheer.

But certain people are more sensitive to 3D and they still get headaches. This has nothing to do with the technology. But those who used to get all sorts of pains due to the heavier glasses - their problems have been greatly reduced. Even then at least 20% of the population will still get headaches because their anatomy does not adjust to artificial 3D.

I personally have used my Samsung PS51D550 about 1ce a month to watch 3D content, about 2/3 times a month it is definitely used by my nieces n nephews to watch a lot of 3D content.. I surely did not plan the purchase thinking that I d watch 3D content frequently.. but the price was very tempting ( @ 63 with 2 3d Glasses)..and an upgrade for our Sony Wega was around the corner...

Also I know couple of my cousins who feel dizzy 15-25 mins into any 3d content.. the same is fine by me and several other acquaintances of mine.

Thanks for all your inputs. Its a small sample but an overwhelming 75% watch it once a month or less.

I also get the point that some 3D models have other 2D features not available in 2D models

olympics 3D broadcast is UK only I believe.

Lijo, can you name a few of the "too many movies in 3d"? Thanks.

Lol, no man i hate typing. Get an invitation from someone who have torrent day account then you can get all of them. But the problem is most of them is already we have seen in 2d.

The Wrath of the Titans had very good 3D effect.
