Size - 40-42"
Type - Plasma/LCD/LED
Budget (strict) - 43
Usage - Tatasky HD, Occasional movies on media player (no gaming/no extensive movie watching)
Network features - Not required
3D - not required

Room has window on the opposite wall, still plasma would work if viewed with curtains closed i.e. plasma is not an issue.

Was actually ignoring Panasonic as the production is supposedly closing down isn't it? (Have not read the related threads completely though)

Kneo Bhai check out the toshiba ps20 LED... It will be around 40-42k... I loved its PQ & it gives me all that I require at a very strict budget... Also check out the 46 inch version which costs only about 10-11k more & is a investment worth stretching ur budget for(even though u have written a strick budget)... Reflections on a lower end plasma are really sad...

PS the 46 inch of the PB20(which is a LCD) should fit in ur budget as I think it is under 45k...

Trying something totally different .....
Does "Vu" have panels in 40-42 inch range?
Long ago I saw a 55 inch panel of Vu and it was doing very good actually..

Seen VU, but viewing synonymously/with other brands like Samsung, Panasonic or LG... the difference in quality is easily noticeable. Other look very natural and original in quality.

Have always appreciated your very practical opinions. If not for your advice when we last met, I'd have plonked down some cash on an impulsive buy which I'd have ended up not using at all !! Now I am patiently waiting to build up my system.

This is actually not for me but for a friend. I'll check out Toshiba but am not aware of it's service network. If I am plonking down 42K, first preference would be LG/Samsung/Panasonic just for their service networks. The user is not going to use it much for HD movies, just regular Tata Sky content (mostly SD and occasionally HD). Even a HD ready would be okay. 42 inch dimensions is because the watching distance is around 20 ft approx. I am leaning towards D490 or 5003 but have to check out the number of HDMIs in each. I am not sure this user will ever have a receiver so definitely need around 2-3 HDMI (Tata Sky/media player + one extra).

hi kneo, another option will be to buy a samsung plasma 43 from ebay sellers who extend their own warranty. Recently my colleague bought one for 26-27k and its fine. Its better than buying from the grey market I guess. Your friend can get a nice AVR with the saved money. Interestingly there are a few sites offering warranty for such ebay items, though their credentials need to be checked.

simple choice.........since you don't have a curtain on the opp wall, plasma would be the best bang for buck!!! Stay away from Panasonic XT series. Only go for Panasonic with UT, ST, GT, VT. Depending on budget I would go with Samsung E450/490 and if you can stretch the budget to maybe 55k then 42UT50 would be excellent...........hard to find a tv plasma or otherwise to match the Samsung E490 in terms of price vs performance.

Any reason why he should stay away from the XT series as his usage is going to be mainly Tata Sky HD?

I thought with the given constraints of 43, XT would be a good bet?

XT50 is not bad but Samsung E490 is better for the same price. I would suggest Panasonic for sure only if he were going for UT50 and above. Anything below UT50 Samsung has better entry level plasma's.

At the entry level there is hardly any difference between the XT50 and E490. I had checked both and both seemed almost the same. What might tilt the favour is the warranty part from Panasonic as the risk factor can be negated somewhat by the 3 yr warranty of Panasonic.

I would rather OP take a call by seeing both the said plasmas in action and then decide and see what better deal he can get.

Also remember 2013 TVs are not far away so old model discounts are to be had if OP does a good search from shop to shop. :) and make sure to avoid demo pieces.

If the OP wants and is willing to spend a little more say about Rs 7000 I am sure he can inch towards the 50 inches XT:ohyeah:.

since i am in for a plasma hunt presently, can u tell me why should I go with UT50 and not XT50?

I am a big panasonic fan...........but would not suggest anything below UT50. If you want to buy X/XT then better to go with Samsung E490. But if you can stretch your budget for UT50 then that is what you should get. A lot of sites have reviewed the UT50 with ST50 and the difference is performance is not that much apart which is remarkable news since the ST50 is one of the top tv's in the market.

Hi All,

Even i m looking to buy a 43" plasma tv, usage is mostly going to be for gaming for 2-3 hours everyday, i have checked out almost 3-4 croma stores in mumbai and samsung E470/E490 is out of stock everywhere. the only available model which comes in my budget (35-40k) is the LG 42PA 4520 (non 3d model), getting this model for 34k from croma, would really appreciate if any one using this tv here could give some feedback. Also, is there any other retail store in mumbai where i can get the E470/E490 in stock ?

Thanks,
