If you are talking about the Oppo BD83, it is really very very good. I would always use it's decoding and DAC over any AVR other than those costing a few lakhs.

Cheers

Yes, I'll be getting the BDP-83 in a week or so. :yahoo:

Also I need to buy those wires to connect analog-to-analog 9RCA cables)? Where do you think I can get good quality cables for cheap? If in US I don't know if my friend will find time to go buy it but I can ask.. so can you please suggest me one? Otherwise if I have to buy here how much would it cost?

Congratulations.

Unfortunately good quality RCA cables are not cheap. I would strongly NOT advise using RCA cables that are very cheap.

One option is to buy 8 individual cables from companies in India such Bandridge, Eagle, DAC and others, tag them and use them.

Alternatively, look at a 8 cable bunch with proper color coding form companies such as Blue Jeans Cable -- Quality Cables at Reasonable Prices. They provide good VFM. Look at Multichannel Audio Cables at Blue Jeans Cable for multi channel audio cables.

Cheers

Thanks so much. I see different options in there. Should I just go for the first one ? Blue Jeans Cable LC-1 Low Capacitance Audio Cable.. there are two other types below and a calculator there... should I go with 8 channels (even though I only have 5.1 channels now) or 6 channels (5.1).

6 channels = 87 dollars
8 channels = 117 dollars

If I order to get it shipped to India there are two options :

standard postal services (with duties and taxes paid by the customer on receipt) and a duties-and-taxes prepaid FedEx International Priority service.

Which one do you think is better? Thanks again.

Try and visualize all your cable needs from player to avr, avr to speakers, avr to sub, avt to display. You will get a good vfm option from bjc (check out the uk site too though more expensive its cheaper to ship).

Then use fedex instead of standard post as its easier to track, esp. when customs is involved its just safer.

You could alternately use borderlinks and check which is cheaper and go with that option. More on borderlinks in the general chit chat forum.

Dear Venkat,
When the signal is decoded at the BDP level and sent to the AVR via Multi Ch Analogue, what is the transmission rate... is it 4-24 Mbps? Or the requirement for this rate is eliminated by first hand decoding?

Does this setup sound as good as via HDMI?

Regards.

Sud98 has already answered answered this query, but I thought I will elaborate a bit, as I have seen this question being asked many times.

At the outset, it is not just a question of which part of the system can decode the audio signal. And, for audio, it really does not matter if your TV is FullHD. What matters to the TV is the video part and not the audio.

The audio can be decoded anywhere, but for it to reach the next part in the HT chain, something called bandwidth or transmission speed comes into play. Typically, Dolby Digital needs a transmission speed of about 440-640 kbps, while DTS demands 700-1.5Mbps. When we move into Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD, and DTS Master HD, the bandwidth requirements jumps to between 4 Mbps to 24 Mbps. This speed cannot be handled by either digital coaxial or by optical transmission.

Let us assume we have a DTS Master HD and I connect the player to the AVR with a optical fibre for digital transmission. What will happen? Typically all movies have a standard Dolby Digital or DTS in addition to Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD/Master HD. If you use digital coax or optical, the Dolby True or DTS HD/Master HD will be ignored and standard version transmitted.

If you opt to decode at the player, you have to connect 6 audio RCA cables for 5.1 and 8 cables for 7.1. This is assuming the player has analogue audio out. Even if a player has analogue out, the quality of sound depends upon the decoders used as well as the DAC used.

If you want to transmit Dolby TrueHD and/or DTS HD/Master Audio in digital form, the only option is HDMI.

cheers

Dune with out HDD is Rs 36,360/ incl of vat & the Viewlab F1 with out hdd is Rs 30,199/- incl of vat at 13.5%.

Hi Prithvi - I just got a quote for Dune Prime model at Rs.35000 from a store called Lakozy in Bombay without HDD and Viewlab F1 at Rs. 23000 without HDD from some importer called Jaymm bombay, which one do you recommend and how are they different? I have been confused to either buy one of the above brands or a Sony Blueray player along with a WD TV or a Tvix or a normus cube. What do you recommend? a all in one or a hybrid?

After so much research on the internet I was unable to find anything on the viewlab f1 or viewlab as a brand, does it have a website? is it a brand or is it an unbranded player? Does it have a warranty?
Please help me with my decision...
Thank you guys :signthankspin:

Hi, Where are you buying the Oppo BDP-83 from? Any dealers in India? Mumbai? Or are you buying it online?

When you decode at the source (or BDP level) you are sending the signals as analogue audio signals and transmission rates do not matter as long as the cable is of decent quality and has 75 ohms capacity. Analogue audio signals are mild electrical current and are not in digital format.

Which sound better depends a lot upon the two units' capabilities in terms of the decoders inside as well as the DAC circuitry. If you take entry level AVRs, the Oppo BDP can beat them hollow. But when you go to high end AVRs, both will sound equally good, and digital transmission may actually be better as there will be lesser distortion and loss of data. When you go to something like a specialised sound processor, they will do the decoding and DAC processing much better.

Cheers

Hi,
This is Satish Parwani from Jay MultiMedia Inc. the distributors of TviX, QNAP, Xtreamer & ViewLab HD MultiMedia Players in India. I just want to clarify that the price of ViewLab F1 as mentioned by Gadget Boy is not correct as according to our records our channel partners pay more price as a Dealer Transfer price than quoted by gadgetboy. So someone would be making a loss for himself in case he has offered that price to gadgetboy. We only sell thru our channel partners. If anyone gets a quote from our side it will always be the MRP which is normally published in our ads in various AV magazines. All products sold from Jay MultiMedia Inc. carry a 12 month FULL REPLACEMENT Warranty against any manufacturing defects.

Thanks
Satish Parwani

>Panasonic BD 60, BD 80 & Pioneer BD 320 both are zone A coded.

are you saying that if i buy any of these models in india, i can play zone A disks on them?

HI,
This is Satish Parwani from Jay MultiMedia Inc. We are the distributors of TViX, QNAP, Xtreamer & ViewLab HD MultiMedia Players in India. I would like to clarify to everyone that the MRP Price of our ViewLab F1 BD Player is Rs.29,999/- & I don't think that any of our channel partners will have quoted Rs.23,000/-(as per gadgetboy) for our player because they pay more than that as the cost price for such a wonderful player unless some channel partner is wishing to incur any loss. Should anyone require any info on any of our products they can email us at [email protected] however please note that all our products are SOLD ONLY THRU our channel partners.

The Sherwood BDP-5004 is region-free for both BD and DVD.
It's a Momitsu 899 clone, with 5.1 audio out too.
A relative of mine just got this from the US. Tested only
US BDs on it so far. The performance is excellent for both BD and
upscaled DVDs at 1080p.
