Room-Speaker setup and the importance of 5mm !

Another extract from the brilliant book “How music works” by David Byrne (Singer, song writer, ex-Talking heads frontman etc)

I am not sure if this is the correct place to put in my question🤔

Placement of rear speaker - Is it ideal to keep the rear speakers (rear left/rear right) at the rear wall (behind my sitting position) or side walls (just right and left side of my seating position (parallel to my ears).

At present, I kept the speakers on the side walls i.e. parallel to my ears and I can hear the music from both the speakers. But if I keep it behind me or raise the present position to 3/4 feet high (above my head level), how it will work?

If on the back wall, with sofa touching the wall, you should
  • Have it 1-1.5 feet above ear level
  • Angle then down so that the left points at right seat and right at left
Ideally left and right would work too, but same thing, take them a bit high and angle down.

Best workaround for such limitations is bipolar speakers on back wall

No, not on a sofa touching the wall. I sit on a chair which is set about 2/2.5 feet from the back wall (in fact, my living room where the TV and systems are kept has the entrance with a wide open entry (without a door) which is about double the size of an ordinary door size).

Presently, the speakers are kept 3 feet above my ear level on the right and left side of the side walls (I sit almost center of the room, i.e. equal distance between the two rear speakers).

I just want to know how the sound quality will be in case I move the speakers at the same height to the back walls which has about 2.5 feet on both sides (leaving the big open entrance)?

Drop them by at least 1.5 to 2 feet if possible , else it’s okay.

Dolby specs say ideally around 110 to 120 degrees. If the wall is that far back, just put it at the corners.

Presume You are referring to the speaker height, and the best is to keep under 2 feet high from floor or from ear level?

Speaker set up explained by Dolby shows that the rear speakers are placed somewhat behind from the seating position and not in level with our seating position.?
