sam9s HTPC Project! powered by XBMC!!

Sam, whenever i try to update the movie info, it says that unable to connect to remote server.. is there anythin to take care of when updating movie information.. i also tried by setting library mode off but still same error... any help wud be appreciated..

Vikram..

I can see IMDB and The MovieDB in the settings.. U r asking about this.. rite..

Yes .... Use IMDB and then try, when you first added the source.... was XBMC able to download all movie information...???

hey sam
After posting that message, i got back home and did some playing around with XBMC.
Figured all the things out you mentioned in the post. Sorry for not doing that before writing in. I just got very excited seeing how well integrated your system was and was enthusiastically trying to find out.

I have got everything to function to my hearts content, except for one little thing that I couldnt get to work. The "Lyrics" function. I was just messing around with the kit and couldnt find a button to turn it on. Read through the XBMC forums as well but found nothing. Weird.

Out of curiosity, have you managed to get it to work?

Well some what, but its far from perfect, but I dont use XBMC to listen to music so I didnt care much. But yes subtitles work perfectly. If you havent manually downloaded the subs you can do it directly within XBMC while the movie is playing. Need to install the subtitle plugin (dont remember the name), but if you go in to add on and browse to movie addons, you will find subtitle add on.

my problem got solved.. there were 2 plugins for movie information.. there was no option to uninstall or disable the moviedb plugin.. so what i did .. i went to movies folder n right clicked.. then set content and chose the imdb plugin to update the information.. n it updated the info.. now i can see the information when using library mode.. :)

Yep that's what the first point of troubleshooting is as mentioned by me in post 285, But there will be an option to uninstall or disable the plugin. Try settings=> add ons or something

Hi Sam,

Need your help on the android based remote for xbmc/mpc-hc. As you said in your earlier post I got a android based phone and immediately downloaded the free app from the market and setup the phone to act as the remote for both xbmc and mpc-hc as I use both of them. For the first during the setup it asked me to enter the IPv4 address which ends with 2 when i checked in my htpc using the ipconfig command. The same was entered and the remote started working as a breeze for both xbmc and mpc-hc. But the next day when i tried to open the xbmc remote app in the phone it was giving me trying to connect. So I tried various means and then looked at the IPv4 address of the htpc it is now showing me ending with 4. When i corrected the same in the app then it worked.
Do you think i need to do something with the htpc to have the Ip address constant. FYI i have connected my htpc to the netgear wireless router using a cat5 cable. And I use another 2 laptops with the wireless option. May be because of the reason I do not have a static ip address.

Hello friends welcome to Sam's HTPC thread....

Well after 2 weeks of research and development and another week to successfully deploy it, finally completed building MY HTPC,

Following is my story and complete built

To begin with one might ask with Media players all over the place giving an out of the box experience and I; already owning one, what was the need to go for an HTPC??

Well following are the 3 main reason for the same .... ofcourse there were many other small factors as well, but the following remains the main.

1. My POHD does not support HD audio and I was not willing to spent another 10-12K to get a new Media Player just for this drawback (reason in the 3rd point)

2. YAMJ, every single media player I have seen (except TViX maybe) has a pathetic YAMJ, along with a crap interface ..... yes even extremer or new POHD2, all lack a polish quality media interface and yes, much needed elite YAMJ

3. Last but not the least, since I upgraded my PC and assembled a new one, I had my old hardware at hand, so decided to use it as my HTPC. All I added was a case and a mid level GPU

(details discussed later in the post.)

Now I had a very specific objective for the my HTPC, as to how it needs to be configured and how it should behave, which was very much in the lines of an actual media player. Few of the points that I had in mind for my HTPC ....

1. It should definitely have the feel of a media player, no windows feel at all, should boot directly in to my Media Center. Though the base would ofcourse be windows (one can opt for linux as well) but I opted to go
for windows .....

2. Boot time as fast as possible (just like media player), will upgraded to SSD later.

3. Quality YAMJ and polished look and feel...... with the entire interface drooling with quality. (This was one of my main reason to ditch media player along with HD audio support)

4. Support for HD audio. (DTA MA and DD THD streaming)

5. Remote for HTPC just like a conventional Media Player

Now that we have a small introduction before moving further I would like to show you the final product, so that you may have an idea what lies ahead.

For the Media Player I decided to choose the awesome front end media center from Xbox called XBMC or Xbox Media Center. There are loads of other media center applications as well like for example "Windows Media Center", "Media Portal", "Media Browser" etc etc and
every media center has its own pros and cones, but XBMC with its cones was the most polished looking media center with max number of TPA plugins and themes .....

Following is the video that shows the complete bootup of the HTPC in to XBMC and explorers the few main functions of the same.

If the end product is liked and there is enough interest in the thread, I will share more details as to how I configured XBMC to behave like how I wanted to.
The video is in two parts since youtube does not allow to load a video which is more then 15 minutes. Plus the quality is bit poor, I recoded the video in 720p but the entire size landed to be pretty huge, around 5GB, so I had to compress it and lessen the resolution to 640x480 to get it under 500MB .....so bare with me on the quality of the video. But it would given you a fair bit of an idea as to how XBMC looks and feel.

To begin with the hardware .....

Remember HTPC is not big deal, you dont need a powerhouse of a hardware to actually get the max out of your HTPC, not even 3D, with my current config I could have used it as my 3DvHTPC as well if I had the 3D display .....

The config (remember its the old hardware I used.)

1. Intel C2D [email protected] Ghz
2. ASUS P5B Delux mobo
3. 4GB DDR2 RAM
5. nVidia Zotac GT440 GPU (This is New)
6. Silverstone LC10-E HTPC cabinet (This is new as well)

Point to not is that I chose to go nVidia way this time for multimedia needs. If you do some research you will come to know that though ATI leads the GPU segment with their HD series, but when it comes to A/V playback capabilities nVidia is said to be better. Specially with CORE AVC codecs used with their popular CUDA technology. Plus there are some rare bugs with video playbacks with ATI that pushed me to go for nVidia for my HTPC. GT4XX series is the best known for A/V playback with full support for HD Bitstreaming and 3D playback.

For case ... well Silverstone LC-10 was the cheapest HTPC case from Silverstone, and I did not want to go for any conventional case. Though there was few from Thermalake that I really liked.

Apart from it I used ....

1. Logitech wifi keyboard combo
2. ANDROID XBMC remote
3. ANDROID TMT5 remote

The applications used ...

1. Xbox Media center XBMC
2. Total Media Theater 5

One can use Power DVD or MPC-HC (with ffdshow)as well

3. Media Center Master

Following are the pictures of my hardware and XBMC. The skin I have used in the below snaps are "Transperancy!" and "MediaStream Redux". Have shared loads of snaps so bare with me ...

hi, congrats on your setup............very impressive and its definitely worth it!!! I want to ask how do you manage HD audio? does the HTPC support dolby TruHD and DTS HD? XMBC now has support for HD audio? I have a similiar setup on my imac with plex. but Plex does not support HD audio.

Sam, thanks for your quick reply to my PM. Yeah after checking out your videos on you tube and reading your threads, I'm highly impressed and motivated to get one HTPC assembled for myself. My requirement is watching movies with good PQ and HD sound. I have Yamaha 371 and Denon 1317 AVR and Jamo speakers for HT. I also have WD media player which I'm presently using for my media files.
Please help me to choose components for assembling HTPC within a budget of 12-14k.

Sam, btw I installed and configured XBMC in my laptop. it worked well, of course unable to find some of the plug ins which you have installed in your HTPC. But I think I will be able install those with your help once my HTPC gets ready.

welcome to my HTPC thread captainrizal, .......

First thing first, with a budget of say 14-15, would you be interested to go DIY way, AFA the hardware goes, or would like to buy an HTPC ((small form factor) and just do the DIY on the OS and XBMC part.

Second if it a complete DIY (Hardware and OS, XBMC etc) then do you have some old hardware lying around, or would like to buy new and assemble it.

You mentioned you have Denon AVR, Jamo spks, what display you have.???

Lastly would you also be interested in getting/building a media server/storage for your media as well, or you would just use a portable HDD to copy movies from other sources and run it.

Just a few questions to start with...... :)

I apologize I couldn't reply earlier, must have slipped.

XBMC does not support HD Audio (Yet, though XBMC 11 Eden would support it)
So the way to achieve is via external players and configure XBMC in such a way that it loads the played from within itself, plays the movie and then, comes back to XBMC

I user Total Media Theater 5 for this purpose, but you can use MPC-HC as well. My video shows how I have configured it and how it performs ...

Well for the amount I tried, the only problem I faced was that MPC HC did not go in to full screen mode automatically the moment the movie started, despite putting the check-mark on full screen mode. You had to manually do it. It was just a small step but was kinda irritating. TMT5 however sweetly goes full screen automatically when the BD starts.

I cant recommend any filter (except maybe ffdshow, which I guess you already must be using to get HD Audio) as I have not tried any, simply coz I am not using MPC at all to run BD ISO via my XBMC, I am pretty satisfied by TMT5 and would continue using it untill XBMC Eden is released .....

well i would like to go DIY way with OS and XBMC. I don't have any old hardware. I use laptops only. I do have one old laptop, I guess it can be of no use for HTPC.
For display, I have LG 42" full HD 1080P LCD and PJ.
I would like to build a media server / storage. As i had mentioned earlier I do have WD media player with 1TB external HDD for storage. However, I'm not very much satisfied with WD player. That's the reason I would like to go with HTPC with at least 1 TB internal storage which i can use with my external hard drive as well.
I don't want to go with ready made HTPCs like Zotac or Mebo. They are either too expensive or don't fulfill my requirement.
