sam9s HTPC Project! powered by XBMC!!

Your HTPC and your Downloading PC both should be on the same network (LAN) via a router. That way you can add the windows drive/folder of the downloading PC in XBMC using SMB protocol (which XBMC supports). The drive in question should be shared and discoverable in Windows

Hi Guys

My HTPC is now complete. But have a few Questions now.

My PC Confg( AMD A6 3500, MSI A75G55 MAtx, Iball Baby cabinet, 4 GB corsair ram 1333, 64 GB Kingston SSD, Movies and TV shows on TB of HDDs)

1. How to auto start XBMC in Full Screen. If I put it in Start Folder the it starts but now its in Menu bar but not Full screen . I would hate to change shells as i need Explorer time to time.

Option 1 - Create two user accounts and set one to boot directly into XBMC. You will need to click the required user account manually. I think MCE remote can do this by using the arrow keys to select the account and enter key to activate.

Option 2 - Use only one account and set XBMC as shell. Then call explorer from within XBMC when you want to see the desktop.

2. All my movies and particularly TV shows are not scrapped properly. Is there any way to correct scrapings and movies naming. Also some TV shows are not even scrapping.

Create a 'master' movie folder and put all your movies in sub folders with folder name in the format 'Movie Name (year)' as in Rango (2011). Add the master folder to your movie library and select the movie scraper. Default scraper is 'The MovieDB' but I use imdb scraper. If you use 'The MovieDB' then enable 'Group movies in sets' under settings> Video settings>library to automatically group movies of the same series.

For TV shows, the naming should be as given in the TVDB website. It is better to search the TV show in TVDB and rename them. Renamer tools are available to rename movies and tv shows automatically. Each episode should be named in the format 'S01E01' where S01 is season 1 and E01 is episode 1. For 'Tom and Jerry' the seasons are 1940, 1650, 1960 as in 'S1940E01 Puss Gets the Boot'. Put all episodes in the same folder with folder name same as that of the show as given in the TVDB site.

3. i have ordered HP MCE remote for use with logitech harmony. Any hints how to proceed on that.

HP MCE remote can be used out of the box, but for added usability install this small file xbmccustomregis. It will add a custom keyboard configuration for xbmc and also control the 'green start button' to start xbmc instead of windows media center. Normally if you press the green start button, WMC will start if you are using Win 7 HP or Ultimate. You will also need to install autohotkey for this tweak to work. All the details are given here.

It is also recommended to disable Windows Media Center so that it is not launched accidentally. I use 'Ultimate Windows Tweaker' to do that. Another method is described here.

There you go all the methods listed here HOW-TO:Make Windows boot directly to XBMC (as a shell) - XBMC

I'll also try it today or tomorrow and let you know what worked for me. I've windows 7 home edition , so eventghost method will work for me i suppose. If you've ultimate or professional you can do this through group policy. Getting to explorer is also explained.

I recently reinstalled my XBMC system. I will share here how to boot to XBMC directly without using eventghost and start Windows explorer from XBMC. The boot time is now incredibly fast 20~25 seconds after pressing the power button. My bios takes ~ 5 seconds to boot into windows, so that is 15 seconds to boot into XBMC on my 5400 RPM WD Green HDD.

Do a fresh install of Windows 7. Install all necessary drivers, XBMC, autohotkey and the customregis file for remote control. The customsregis will install a custom keyboard for xbmc and an autohotkey script file 'GSB_Win32bit_v1.06' under the startup folder to control the behaviour of MCE remote control. Disable the Windows Media Center.

Download 'Instantsheller'. Select the path to XBMC. Check only 'Change shell for current user only' and 'Change shell application'. This is important to get the Windows Desktop when you want. Otherwise you will see only the explorer. Restart your computer and you are booting directly into XBMC without starting Windows desktop or explorer.

I have discussed how to start Windows desktop from XBMC here.

How did you manage to get a video/movie that is in Anagalyph format. No movies/videos are made in that format ..???

Or is it that TMT converts a regular video in Anagalyph display in Run time ...???

Hi

I dont know sam i will find out so far i have seen Final-destination 3D and Green Lantern 3D with excellent results on my PJ and LG 42 Plasma.

^^ Ok tell me when you play the FD 3D movie on your non 3D display how does it look without the glasses ro anything. Is is like the screen split in two halfs or we have one ig blurry image, or an image with red and green side lines running all over. Is it possible for you to upload a 30 sec small sample clip of the movie you are viewing on your display.

Hi

Ya I have found out FD5 3D is Real D - 3D and regarding GL i cant find any wiki info.

It is TMT5 that does the job with all 3D settings in GPU set to "Auto". I will try to post the clip.

Would changing the shell still run the applications in startup like anydvd which is required to be running in tray for region free ?

If you change the shell, only the new shell application (xbmc) will work. Other auto start applications wont start. Use eventghost as shell and add all apps you need to start automatically.

Thanks , this saves me a lot of time of research. I was logically correct in thinking that this would not work. So eventghost configuration is the way to go for me.

Eventghost itself will take some 5 seconds to load thus increasing the boot time. Each application you add will increase the boot time. So put XBMC as the first application in eventghost followed by other apps. If needed, you can set a delay for other apps. In addition, by using eventghost, you can configure the cheap pc remote controls available in ebay, very easily.

Instead of eventghost, silentlaunch can also be used to start your applications. This is very fast, but it will show an ugly command window at start.

Hi Sam9s, thanks for the detailed info regarding XBMC, i tried organizing my media in my main pc and it looks cool....
Now i have to convert my old pc into a htpc.. the only problem i have is even though it has moderate config my graphic card (Ati HD 4850) doesn't have a hdmi output, is there any other way to output HD audio to my avr.

I think apart from hdmi there is no other way you can get HD audio to your receiver. So replace your 4850 with other basic gpu card with hdmi either from ati or nvidia and you are good to go.

Thanks

Hi

I have using HTPC based on Fusion E-350 Gigabyte platform for the last 2 years with XBMC and MPC as my media players for normal and bluray iso's.

A week back just to try some 3D movies on non-3D Plasma TV and Projector (Accer K-11) i purchased XFX GT-520 GPU and istalled on the above platform.

To my surprise XFX GT-520 which cost me around Rs.3240/- works very well and is rendering very good 3D effects on my bluray iso's with TMT 5 as my media player.

Hi sub, I am also using the same mobo GA-E350N-USB3. I want to ask you a few questions regarding this mobo.

1. This mobo has PCIE 16X slot, but it will run at 4X only. So can any GPU be used?
2. The PQ is very bad like the text is blurry on my HDTV when HDMI is used. I tried various settings, but I can see that even the bios screen is not as sharp as the VGA. Is it due to the HDTV? Mine is not FHD. I am using VGA now as it has better PQ.
3. The manual says to set 'Onboard VGA output connect' under Advanced BIOS' Features to D-SUB/HDMI. I couldn't find any such settings in the bios.

Hi

1. First i tried XFX Radeon HD 6750 PCI-E 2.1 which is more a 3D Gaming GPU with 1GB DDR purchased by my son for his gaming needs costing around Rs.6300/- and it worked flawlessly for both gaming and movies (3D and HD audio) and it takes power from SMPS.

Since i am more into movies and music i wanted to buy a GPU that is much cheaper and should do the job. In the process i stumbled upon this XFX GeForce GT - 520 GPU PCI-E 2.0 with 2GB DDR3 inbuilt memory HDMI, DVI, VGA card for Rs.3,200/- and to my surprise it worked with latest Nvidia drivers and it takes the power from the mother board (I have a 450W SMPS).

So I have tried 2 GPUs of varying capacity and brand on Fusion E350 Gigabyte platform and both works.

2. Mine is also not an FHD TV and it is 42" LG plasma and i have selected the screen display as 1020 X 720 which works fine for both windows content and XBMC with HDMI connection ( HTPC -> Denon 1611 -> powered splitter -> LG 42" Plasma TV and Acer K 11 projector).

3. In the advanced Bios setup you have to select "Init Display First" as PEG if you want to use external GPU.

Hope this helps

Couldn't help notice the 'powered splitter'. Can you give details on pricing, source and is it remote controlled ?

Hi

I have both Powered and non-Powered splitters both are from MX brand, if your GPU is very powerful (., taking power from SMPS) you can use non-Powered splitters. If GPU is taking power from Mobo you need the Powered one for boosting the signal to multiple displays.

Non-Powered splitter around 1600/- and Powered splitter is 2570/-.

According to the explanation above I need a powered one then. Can you point me towards where you bought it ? I can only find some on eBay but are quite expensive. Also are there things like hdmi 1.3 or 1.4 to be considered in these splitters, as I need 3D pass through in it .

I thought a simple Y connector with a manual switch would do the trick but looks like it's yet another piece of equipment that I need to research and buy. Phewwww......

Hi

You can use an alternate method also like buy a HDMI cable with 1.4 specification with male pin at one end which you can connect to AV receiver and a female pin at the other end in which you can connect your TV as well as as Projector manually ( only one at a time). This will be cheaper for you say around 600/- only.

In chennai we have an exclusive dealer for MX brands, i dont know about bangalore anyhow you can google for a dealer there.

Quite a high end looking mobo, but if it is the built in graphics that you are relying on then note that I could not make out of the HDMI out is 1.4 or 1.3. Please research a bit on that for SBS Stereoscopic 3D support. Another thing is that unless you are going for extensive gaming or Graphics hungry applications like Maya, etc dual GPU support (the 2nd pci-16 works in 4x mode only) may not be required and if you do I would suggest getting another mobo which support more speed on the 2nd slot.

Again your mobo has built in Gigabit LAN so you may not need a separate LAN card and for osome other reason even if you do go for Gigabit LAN card only.

Regarding Keyboard mobo combo / remote, i suggest try this one, I have not tried though but it seems to me a good runaway from limitations of a remote on one hand and the bulkiness of a keyboard / mobo combo on the other hand.
