Samsung la32a550p1rmxl rocks - sony cx520 sucks - plz help

Film Mode or Cinema Drive is used to "decode" 24p cinema frames from an interlaced or progressive non 24p source. It does not do any motion interpolation or dejuddering.

The A550 doesn't have any frame interpolation tech.

Nope it doesn't have the frame interpolation which is present only in A65x model.

Try some more videos with heavy judder like planet earth.

Perhaps his LCD wont fare well in the above movie alone, but in my LCD i dont get even the entry level dejudder.

Hello hifivisioners

I am terribly frustrated. Please help me..

I purchased a Sony cx520 40 in grey recently. My cousin has a 3 yr old Samsung la32a550p1rmxl 32 LCD. I have a WD TV LIVE HUB and he has a WD TV LIVE player and he is using a belkin 1.4 cable (Neither his TV nor his player has HDMI 1.4 support)

Yesterday I watched AVATAR (17GB) movie in his house and the playback smoothness and lifelike picture quality was amazing and very appealing to my eyes. So with much expectation I played the same in my player. But I was very shocked to see that there is no such smoothness and lifelike picture quality in my TV. Thinking that the belkin cable is responsible for such amazing smoothness, I checked my hdmi cable (Chinese make) in his TV. But even with such a poor quality cable the result is the same amazing quality

Its like watching the movie in 3d. Not only avatar, but even Indian movies are very smooth. I havent seen such a smoothness in any movie in my life. I have seen them only in discovery, NGC, etc.

I want to know the Sony cx52 being a 2011 model with x-reality engine (marketing gimmick??) why does it lack such smoothness and picture quality?. The smoothness is like we see in a computer game.

Are there any specific settings or refresh rates which I have to alter to get the same smooth playback. There are no settings for refresh rates in my TV, but his Samsung TV has a plethora of settings. Guys I hope you understood my issue Please help me guys..

I think you should check the player which you used for playing Avatar.

My player plays with the same smooth effect in his TV. The player has nothing to do with a dejudder effect which is incorporated in the TV's image processing engine..

If you where playing a 1080p24 video your tv will do 3:2 pull down.Which is the basic thing present in all tvs today.

The 100hz tvs will do better. But your cousin tvs isn't one of them.

As far as the X-reality its a fine processor, you can check the EX720 review in HDTVTEST uk,it excells in all parameters from upscaling to de-iterlacing to cutting down input lag and dejuddering.
They say new improved motionflow system gives the 1080lines of motion resolution without giving the soap opera effect.

why dont you check your avatar/player in some sony 32" model with same configuration and settings as per your cousins 32" sammy

i tried playing it in my father's sony tv. But no such effect. moreover how can you expect the adjustment options found in a samsung tv to exist in a sony tv ?. Still you dont believe in the dejuddering effect it seems..

I am almost certain that what you are referring to is the refresh rate of the TV. The cx520 has a 60hz refresh rate. Its likely that your friends TV although older is 100-120hz. This is the "smoothness" you are referring to. Check the back of his tv im sure you will find its 100hz. Personally i prefer the slower frame rate of 60hz, its more movie like. I have the cx520 myself and personally i think its AWESOME.

Let me know :indifferent14:

No its because of motion interpolation which is technically called dejuddering. I am very sure his TV doesnt have the refresh rate which you are referring. Yes the 60hz which is found in the normal LCDs like the cx52 will appear better. Now i feel such a soap opera effect is boring. IN order to conceal the lags in the movie such an effect has been given to that TV which i feel.

Anywa for 3d movies like AVatar its amazing but i wont prefer the soap opera effect for normal movies...

I just found this topic by coincidence and i wanted to clear up some information, The CX520 is all about tweaking and adjusting thereafter you'll get a superior image quality and smoothness.

I was completely shocked after i bought it and something started whispering into my ears "Is SONY that bad and i got ripped off like that by some false features" the picture was really underwhelming and dull but i got hold of myself and decided not to jump to conclusions without a full analysis, I started to play a little bit with options i was extremely happy with what i'm seeing (gaming-movies) in regard to picture quality, colors and everything.

to sum it up first thing you wanna do is to turn the goddamn light sensor off and tweak the counters to your liking, And i can assure that you'll be very pleased with the final result just drive your way through the screen and don't be shallow because of the initial quality.

@ executed , will you please share the settings of your TV?

It will be much appreciated, thanks

I would happily do that, The thing is the perspective might vary from a person to another, but there are some options of which definitely enhanced and brought the picture back alive from the dead side :

When you choose the original mode and pick vivid afterwards that will lock up the advanced settings on the other hand when you choose standard adv. settings will be active and ready to roll.

Live colours : i can't imagine watching movies without it set to high or medium (low would be great for gaming)

black corrector: it makes the black look better but darkens the picture a little not a big deal.

Adv. contrast enhancer: it definitely does a great job with the distribution of contrast all around the screen.

details enhancer\edge enhancer : basically both of 'em pretty much does the same job as sharpness but takes it to the next level watch a good quality movie and focus on their faces and keep turning it off and on you'll notice a great difference it's like watching a screen from the nineties and instantly when you turn it on as if you used a time machine to travel through centuries anyways it just makes the picture sharp to the letter, For example if you set details enhancer to high you must decrease the sharpness to less than 50.

also don't forget to modify sharpness and colors\colors temperature depends on your seating distance, I know what has been said isn't supposed to be considered as news but i tried to help to an extent.

Whats the view mode(p-size) you are using?.

Try with "Just scan" option instead of other modes like "16:9" or "stretch" ..etc. It doesnt make much difference but at least "just scan" option skips the default image processing of TV.

And If there's any option related to "bravia image sync" or some thing, disable it. I saw this option in some old model of SONY TV not sure about your model.

And if there's any setting specific to frame rates in TV settings, Disable it or set it to default. Smoothness can be effected if there's any inconsistency in frame rate settings between TV and player.

Your TV is LED or LCD?. Your friend's TV is LCD, If yours is LED then try the sample with SAMSUNG LED TV.

Read the below articles, I think you are facing the similar issue. It might help
