Not advisable to keep stuff on one another from a SQ pt of view. Best to separate them out.
Good point.

But Nagra components are designed to be stacked one on top of another (notches on the top cover). Maybe its just for aesthetics.

Either ways I will separate them out to see if SQ improve, it would be a shame if it does (haha), they look so much better all stacked up.

How does it sound compared to a modern amplifier?

It was made in 1979, and all components are stock still.
Slight hiss or noise when very very close to speakers, almost when you touch ears.
Phono 1 stage lacks gain, there are two so yet to compare second one.
Slight Pops when powering on, I turn of the speaker inputs before turning it on.

But yet I enjoy this amp more than modern amp, apart from the Vu Meters, there are more things to like about it.
Warm analogish sound, and so much customisation the way you want to tune the sound is something to be experienced.

I will be doing a full comparison with Modern amp soon.

Completed a Tube SSE (Simple single ended). This build has a few things that make it very versatile.

- Switch Sec. V between 275 & 300v (B+ upto 360v)
- UL/Triode Switch
- 4 bias levels to run different tubes
- Switch between tube /solid-state rectifier.

The design is by George Anderson. Check it out here - a very versatile board. I've got a few more builds coming with various voltages ( B+ 460v for 6550) and one with a regulated screen voltage for running sweep tubes.

The transformers are Edcor and the CCS ICs are IXYS10M45s. Everything else is sourced locally. Thanks to Beginner_N (Nishant 🙏) for the chassis.
Its an easy build.

On the rear side:
L to R - RCA input /Speaker out (toggle in-between switches UL and Triode) / Test points for B+ and Cathode V. / Secondary toggle (275 & 300v).

On the top:
Right side - bias switches
Left side - small toggle does Solid-state and Valve rectifier switching

Congratulations! Looks nice.
How’s it sound?

Amomgst the moderns, the likes of Lomachemko/Amir khan and the quick jabs and movements. Man the hand speed. Yes the fly/feather/ lightweights et al bring a certain excitement that only they bring. Manny and Mayweather, I love them all. My favourites lie in the lighter divisions.

Tyson Fury, is 6 and half feet (or thereabouts) tall but is nimble in a way only a few big men in this weight class have been prior (not that i have followed them all...i mean boxers or amplifiers). And the man likes to sing too😀 Primal in comparison maybe but man...what the heavy weights bring to the game. The Sun Audio might be a bit like the Gypsy King. Though it's not a 50 watt push pull but a meagre 4.5 SET.

Cheaptubeaudio says 6v6 is his favourite tube. You see how I like to pick selective excerpts, there's no method to my madness.
Even if i used hifi metaphors, I would use the words intechangeably and leave even myself confused. So what the hell, I thought I'd do this instead20230220_132344.jpg. What i can surely say about the amp is full bodied rounded and big tone, the highs are crisp. But you see what I mean about my limited vocabulary. Thanks for reading.😀

When I fired up the SSE I put a pair of Mullard EL34 XF2. I wanted to be sure everything was running well, but this tube likes higher voltages. Tested on another board with 420v ~ 25w dissipation, it can really rock. But thats another story.

The board in the pic was made for low power, upto 5w (B+ 360v) and the 6V6GT RCA are going in tomorrow.

Attaching a few more photos of the Sun Audio 6v6SE. The tamura transformers seem to be key as the circuit under the hood is minimally populated.

Rocking it with Zu Audio Dirty weekend powered by LFD LE Mk5
Got slam, finesse, sound stage width and even depth, nice transients and decay of notes. Plenty of nuanced lows. Tighter with the LFD than the 300B SET. Source is the Bluesound node 2i and the DAC is MHDT Havana
Life is as good as it gets with Midfi

Late post alert! The project started in March 2022 & in June 2022 I finally got these. So the idea of Audio Nirvana drivers came from a fellow audiophile & a good friend @kartikay (Kartikay Mohan Sharma). Coming from Focal Aria 923, I decided that its always better to have easy to drive speakers then the likes of the demanding once, so the final purchase decision was Audio Nirvana 15". @sadik is the obvious genius behind the built (& what a piece of work these finally came out to be). After a hug hiccup in logistics (like the delivery van meeting with an accident & going down the mountain... literally) I finally received the wooden boxes carrying my speakers, a big shout out to Sadik bhai for the amazing built, finishing, patience + that iron clad kinda packing which saved the enclosures.
Coming to the sq, AN15 are quite fast with amazing tonality & sounds glorious, the holography is top notch, be it the width or the depth (the perception of height is yet to be fully tested) they produce without sacrificing the pin-point accurate imaging & the resolution, they way these disappear is some different uncanny experience. The full range sub bass is different & when called off, they do produce shattering sub bass with absolute control & sometimes I wonder if I am re-discovering the tracks which I have heard earlier. They are still maturing with time & so is my setup, lots of changes to follow. With no crossover & a sensitivity of 99db+, the ANs are easy to drive & I feel they could do something superb with a quality power source like toooobs or low power class A amps.
That's a wip till the next post ;).
