The very first time I laid my eyes on a Garrard 301 was at Mr. Kuruvilas place sometime early last year. Truly, these beauties had cast a spell on me with the magic they were producing. The experience was mesmerizing. British born, these idlers truly commanded respect and from then on, they were Sir Garrard to me.
The Garrard 401 was introduced in the year 1965 to replace the 301. Apart from the more austere styling some of the main changes were; increased shielding to reduce hum, raised phosphorous bronze thrust pad.
Analogue critics acclaim the 401 to be technically superior to the 301.
Now, a lot has happened with me over the years with turntables. A couple of Legendary 1200s which honestly are great players and are definitely in serious contention with the greats. I dont think I will ever get tired of the 1200s and they will and continue to be staged on me primary racks.
Sir Garrard 401 arrived a few days ago from his homeland England to join me 1200s. An idler I cant wait to setup . I am expecting the 401 to be punchier than the 1200s. I was fortunate to get a clean mint condition 401 motor board with the mechanicals in prime condition and which also has a Bearing Mod done already. This was hand carried by me friend through hand luggage . Connected the power leads to the TT and then powered up Sir Garrard and I was quite happy to see nothing shook during transit. The motor is all set to be plugged and played. Now I need to work on is building a plinth and a tonearm setup. I did away with some of my equipment to make way for Sir Garrard 401.
Projects lined up for the next couple of weeks:
401 Plinth: 6 Layered 18mm Marine Plywood Plinth Marine plywood already acquired; needs precision cutting and putting all layers together. I intend to have this Veneered at the end and then polished.
Tonearm Setup: I have still not narrowed down on the tonearm yet. A lot of options, but need to narrow down.
This feels literally like owning a Crown Jewel in Hi-Fi along with me 1200s .
