solar power generation -need of the hour?

solar panels are not safe in a gully cricket playing country. :ohyeah:

But there is hope. Recently some western lab managed to produce transparent sunfilm like solar panel so that every home can generate power. But the large scale manufacture and useable technology at reasonable cost is still maybe more than a decade away.

I am not sure about 10 hours but I have an inverter which covers everything like fans, lights, TV, Tata Sky, fridge, etc. comfortably for 4 hours daily (Hyderabad power cuts). Also, the electricity bill has not spiked too much after adding the inverter.

Only heavy equipment like geyser, grinder, washing machine, induction stove, etc. is not connected.

Also, the cost was economical (compared to solar panel prices)... cost me about 13K.

Our OP has a situation of 10hrs power supply. With only 10hrs of supply, he would barely be able to charge his batteries fully even if he has an array of batteries for 14hrs backup. That's why he would need to integrate grid with some off-grid solutions for his need.

Well solar power practically is not at all feasible for home use currently, reason already discussed.............., why have you people forgotten LPG. I am in Ghaziabad and in summers even I face 10-12 hrs power cut. Inverters are absolute no use in this condition. Plus there is always a struggle as to what to keep switched on and what not to.

Then I came across this LPG genset by HONDA, bought it around a year ago, and all is well since then, the running cost has come down so much that I feel I should keep it running through out. Though LPG cost has sky rocketed, but still I can easily pass one month with one cylinder and can keep anything switched on, my TV, HT, Computer, etc, except ofcourse the AC. even if we take the non subsidized cost of the LPG which is like 1100 for delhi, divide by 30 is like ~ 36 rs per day ..... and on an avg in summers my genset run 3-4 hours every day. (Which charges the inverter as well.). makes around rs 12/hour running cost........ :)

I agree with the previous poster on LPG based Generator. I think that is a more viable/economical option today. OTOH, the discussion on solar panel starts and ends with the cost. Strangely, many people while building/buying a new home would prefer to spend lakhs in italian marble or light fittings etc but hesitate to spend 2-3% of the house price on solar panels (in Bangalore independent homes in most areas cost at least 80-90 lakhs.).
Probably sq. ft of flooring costing > Rs 250/sq.ft sells 50 times more every year than sq.ft. of solar panels sold if not more. I would argue that it is the people's priority that is making solar look expensive.

agreed. once net metering is allowed this may change

Hi Karthi,
I am not offering any suggestions, just a query . Do you live in Trichy town or near the Kaveri/ Uyyakondan? Just wondering whether living near these areas makes it better with power cuts?

Sorry to butt into this thread and not provide any help or advice.

Just came across this toon so posting it

Basically as the cartoon suggests, its a nexus of western capitalist corporations that keep solar technology unaffordable and out of reach.
