Hello Guys,

comparing the two Sony models..BDP-S490 and BDP-S790

Input/Output:
For Analogue Audio Output both models say Yes for 2ch but have no 5.1ch or 7.1ch.

Does this mean that the Blu ray disc wont give out a 5.1ch audio output to the AVR for movies played?

Region
There is no mention of which region does it support. How to find this information?

Finally, can any of these models be hacked to make it Region Free?

Ash

Sony BDPs are locked to their region of sale. So if you are buying the same sold by Sony India, then it will be locked to region C.

So far not a single Sony BDPs are known to be made region free for BDP (except for hardware mod, which is expensive and needs advanced skill of soldering etc).

But almost all of them can be made region free for DVDs by remote hack. Please do search for more clues on AVSFORUMS for DVD hack.

Hi Manzb,

Thanks for the reply.. I did check on the forums for the hack. But it says that that this makes it only region free for DVD and not for Blu Ray.

I see that you also have a S490. have you made it region free for Blu Ray? How?

I made it region free for DVDs only with an URC. Not for Blu ray. Blu ray region free is next to impossible unless hardware modified, which is complicated.

Currently I am not that much bothered about BD region free, reason

1. most movies (region free) - almost 80% plus are anyway region free

2. Other Movies (region locked)- you can survive by watching the DVDs or if you insist on a HD PQ, then Internet download.

So it is not a big issue. But if you insist on a Region free Blu ray player, then buy any Pana BD player and you can mod it by firmware upgrade with about 2k additional expense. Hope it helps.

about the 490:does the region free hack(DVDs) stay even after subsequent firmware updates? or is there a possibility that it may become region locked/unhackeable due to this in future?

Thanks a lot guys..I finally purchased the 490 thru eBay ..got the delivery yesterday.
I had a few queries for those who hv earlier purchased the player:
1. The bundled HDMI cable is not from Sony but some "JAE" Chinese one..is this normal?
2.i did not get a 3d glass along with the bundle though I hv seen the same advertised in Sony World & Reliance Digital
3.I got the 2 blu rays (mib3 & tintin) but they were also not sealed in the transparent plastic which we usually get when we purchase them off the shelf.is this all normal?
Please share your experiences.

1. An HDMI cable is an HDMI cable - it either works or does not work. Sony does not manufacture HDMI cables.

2. Did the eBay seller mention 3D glasses as part of the package? If yes, get in touch and demand it.

3. The blu-ray discs should have been sealed in the plastic cover. But as long as the discs themselves are scratchless and play well, it does not matter much. Blu ray discs are coated with protection coating to manage minor smudges and scratches that may occur in normal usage.

Yeah u are quite correct but I just wanted to know what others hv got because the Dealers tend to fib a lot regarding these things & more when it's an online purchase....no he has not mentioned the 3d glass but he had mentioned a factory sealed piece with all accessories & Sony India warranty. That is why I was curious because I got the blus & HDMI being offered by Sony but not the 3d glass. Also it was not a factory sealed one as he told he had to open it for stamping the warranty card & inserting the blu rays..

I bought it online from ezoneonline.

For the 3D glass, it is mentioned on the Box clearly in my case. Initially they shipped without the 3D glass, but when I demanded they asked for a photograph of the box, where it is mentioned. I sent it to them, and they sent me the glass separately. Anyway, as of now I don't have a 3D TV. So the glasses are lying unused and sealed.

I had received both the Blu ray movies in fully sealed condition. They are of great quality, and truly comes alive with the player.

Not sure about the HDMI cord. Have not noticed it, as I have only one HDMI slot in my TV and there is already a cord (from TS) connected to it, which I use whenever I play the S490.

I got the player in sealed condition. Nowadays, warranty card doesnot necessarily need stamping. If you have the original invoice with VAT/ TIN etc, that can be produced to get the benefit of warranty. Anyway, you can figure out from the other ways whether it was used like scratches etc on the body (it is prone to scratch very easily).

Thanks a lot..the player appears to be new..no scratches etc. but surprisingly there is no sticker or anything else on the box of the player detailing the free items!i suspect it must have been taken off by them as I have clearly seen them on the boxes of 490 in reliance digital & Sony world..but really don't know if I can charge them as it was not mentioned in their listing on eBay

It has slipcase cover over the regular box, where the freebies are mentioned. SO the dealer might have removed the slipcase, as he can sell the 3D glass for 2.5 to 3K which is his additional profit. Why not you enquire with Sony whether the scheme of 2BD and the glass is standard or there other scheme as well.

Had bought the 490 from Ebay too. Sealed package had clearly mentioned & included only the player along with the 2 blu rays & hdmi cable (JAE).

There was no mention of the glasses which, as mentioned above, the seller was selling separately on ebay itself.

The seller has listed the glasses for 2.5k separately on eBay so whatever u all are saying is bang on target.but the price which I paid for it 8.5( +5% off coupon) is definitely much less than what is being offered by the offline dealers.
Reliance Digital has it for 9990 (along with the glass though) but I have not checked the stand alone dealers here in Kolkata.
So on the whole it's a good deal for me ...the only thing which hurts you is the lack of clarity on the part of these sellers(promising factory sealed product but sending one which has been opened from their end, removing the free gifts flyer etc)

Yeah it was clearly mentioned in the listing.i got the Sony India warranty card as well though the dealer has not put the stamp on it but I hv the bill with the vat/tin details so that shud not be a problem
