Sony HiFi Music System vs 2.0/2.1 Active Speakers

Hi,

I want to purchase a fresh music system for my bedroom (approx 14ft x 10ft) after my old Sony Hifi system died (circuit burn).

I am very confused between buying another Hifi System (like this one MHC-ECL7D : Mini Hi-Fi System : Hi-Fi System : Sony India) or a 2.0/2.1 speaker system and play that using my basic philips dvd player

Budget - 15k max (max!) and I don't plan to add any components in the future

Usage - 80% Music, 20% Movies

If you can reuse the speakers from your old Sony Hi-fi system & add a New amplifier like Astonia SC 300/301 (5K), you can save money (10K) ... hyeah:

please suggest. I can even consider a cheap amp (Astonia SC 300?) with passive bookshelves. But total cost of the setup has to be below 15000

if you prefer good bass at low levels, get a decent 2.1 for 10k

Hmmm Really tough to find a stereo setup for < 15K. YOu can take the used route.. Look for the classifieds section of forum to find any good deals that will suit you...

check if you can flick the speakers from you lil bro & promise him something later hyeah: as you need to spend less on stereo amp (5K)..

2. Norge 2030 (amp) + DNM scs 808 = 15k

just found out that one of the speakers has also blown up a circuit (that's what happened to the main unit too)...must've been one nasty voltage fluctuation.

So, going by the answer trends, amp+passives seem to be the way to go over 2.0/2.1 Actives and Sony/Philips hifi's then? Should I zero in on the setup atleast then? Will decide on the exact amp and speaker after that.

You can also consider Audio Engine A2 active speakers... But they might be slightly expensive (3K) over your budget...

Amp plus passive bookshelves will be much much better than any Sony or other brand 'hifi' system any day. If you are prepared to wait a little then keep looking in Olx or Quikr and the 'For Sale' section in the forum for used pair of speakers. Those can be had for as little as 10K, there is a CA S30 for sale for 8k here in Kolkata. Pair these with a Norge amplifier, you will like the result.

I am located in Visakhapatnam. I was hoping buy these online, but can't seem to figure out where I'd get them, or even the latest prices. Someone help!

If you want powered a good option is entry level Swan bookshelf speakers which are better than Audioengine A5 speakers and cost less than half as much!

You can also consider PSB Alpha PS1 for around 20k.

Or go with the passive route, Lepai/Topping amp with entry level bookshelves like Dayton etc.
