Sony KDL-55/47/42 W800A - Owners and Aspirants

Dhanan, thanks for 2TB hdd feedback,I too guess so that media player (inbuilt) in both models soulld be same. I will be buying a new companion for my TV soon, though I have new questions
>> which HDD make/model you possess?
>> is it external powered ?

in my case the problem with 8GB playback was certainly something to do with HDD (1TB), As the same file plays well when stored in 40 GB HDD.Interesting part is video starts and got struck afetr 30-40 minutes.

Though the same 1TB HDD works well for smaller sizes, guess I need some more trail and error expepriments with other bigger files.

Also need to know if we can play 3D content stored in HDD :p, or we need dedicated BLUERAY Discs and play it through Blueray disc player/PS ??

Mine is WD my passport USB 3.0 2TB HD. It is USB powered.
And yes 3D content can be played from HD.

Dear TV Gurus,

I finally narrowed down to buy W800A but have some questions. could you please answer?

1. How about the sound quality and performance ?
2. Non-HD channel PQ (Like Sun Tv / Vijay Tv
3. Has it inbuilt web browser? How about the surfing?
4. How to access the keypad?
5. What is the processor core (single / dual)
6. 3D performance as compared to LG 42LA6620.

Thanks a lot for taking your precious time out to answer my qustions.

Regards - Siva

Guys,
I just bought W800A,have some questions to be answered before I go for accesories

1. Anyone using 2TB HDD with it directly? I attached 1TB and it works fine, if 2TB is compatible too then I'll purchase a new one.:yahoo:

2. I heard there are certain 3G dongles that goes well with this , any feedback?

3. I tried playing 8 GB movie though 1TB HDD, and it got struck in between, is it something to do with the file size/HDD size? (same plays well in my laptop :clapping:)

4. Presently it lies on 3.5 ft table, soon planning to wall monut at abt 4ft hight, will it provide OKAY viewing angle?

KD

I have a word with one of SONY senior tech & he inform that it support upto 1TB.

Guys,

As said before posting compitable congigurations of 3G Dongles

Right from Sony salse people, few dongles that goes well with sony "PLUG & PLAY"

Airtel-E1731
Idea- E1732
Reliance-E173
Open Market-E303C
HiMini-E369

Have not tested any of those my self, though my DOCOMO photon+ (EC1260) is not compitable.

Good choice.
1. The sound quality is pretty good. For normal SD TV viewing I use it.
2. Sun TV, Vijay TV are good. Basically the SD content is very much watch-able.
3. and 4. There is an inbuilt browser. I tested it. Looks nice. But I use a laptop for browsing. Using TV for browsing might be quite a task. Keypad is shown in TV for typing. You need to use your remote to type. Pretty tough thing. I have not tried any USB/wireless keyboards
4. I looks single core to me. It takes a couple of seconds to load Youtube for example. I think it is fine. Not too slow.
5. 3D using blu ray is amazing. Same for Rips in hard disk. However simulated 3D (from 2D) is pretty bad compared to LG. I don't use that feature at all but if it is important to you, please do check them side by side in a showroom.

HI Guessmewho,

Finally got the answers for my headbreaking questions. 2D to 3D simulation even I didnt able to find any diff between sony and Lg.. Perhaps am not techie guy and am sure I can't convert my sun / vijay tv programs to 3d and watch.

Thanks a lot .. going to grab this one ASAP

Will update soon.

Siva

:D

Just need to calibrate the picture settings .. Havnt given much time to it.. Been watching movies all night long..

Few issues or queries... I tried watching youtube videos by going through the browser .. First it said.. Adobe flash player is needed to play it.. Then it says.. The video is too large to play :/ this is not d way.. Why wouldn't i watch long videos on youtube.. :/
What's the cache memory of this t.v?

Does an hour long video work fine through the youtube app?

1. Sound quality is good.. If you are an audiophile.. Like me.. You might like to go for a soundbar or so.. But the stock speakers sound good !
2. Non HD is watchable.. Very lil pixelation on 55 if you sit closer.. :) and HD is mind 'BOOM' !! :ohyeah:
3. Browser is good and tight and depends on the bandwidth of the network for the speed.. No issues with it.. But do check out the cache memory.. Maybe it woudnot play bigger videos from youtube.. Would try out the app after an update and let you know..

Ansh

Guys,

I have finalized the 47W800, i just have 2 questions:

1. Can we watch 3D videos using a PenDrive in the USB port of the TV ?

2. Can we watch 3D videos via Youtube App or via Inbuilt Browser of the TV ?

If we can do so then i won't have to buy the 3D bundle package.

Regards,
Shivam

Sony has stopped production of W800 as they have replaced it with W850. It is advisable to purchase 47W850 which has a triluminous panel.

The support for 3D by the built-in player of TV is very limited. It didn't play the two 3D files I tried from the USB drive. Youtube 3D was no issue.

Better to go in for an external player if 3D movies are a priority.

shivam,

dont go for w800 its going to be out of production soon , w850 with triluminos display is a much better buy, at 3-4k extra u would luv the vibrant colours:) sony has dropped a bomb by launching w850 it wud effect sales of both w800 and w950 ,

Dear all,

Finally I have joined the W800 club.. Booked yesterday and awaiting delivery. More excited and thanks a lot for all the support & input.

Siva

Hi Shainz,

The only difference between w800 and 850 is TRILUMINOS Display.

W800 - Live color
W850 - TRILUMINOS

Other than this nothing makes difference. As these technologies keep changing i decided not to shell out more 5k only for this. Live Color itself awesome for me.

Thanks a lot for your analysis and inputs. Keep looking for more.

Siva

Underlying panel technology is way different. Live color is a software processing where as triluminous is hardware changes. 5k over 80K is hardly 5%.

Hi All,

Could be but I don't feel w800 is inferior to w850. TRILUMINOS is more of marketing gimmick and the viewing difference is immaterial for the layman eyes.

Because the technologies are ever changing and who knows the TRILUMINOS could be superseded by some other technology in future. However, w850 might be better than w800 but w800 owners don;t repent for their choice and end of the day its budget call :). I hope you agree.

Thanks - Siva

I doubt. TRILUMINOS is not a marketing gimmick. It has some serious technology - quantum dots behind it. Also, W850 is a local dimming panel. PQ difference between the two is significant, specially for skin tones and black level. You can check W900 reviews.

Doesn't seem to be local dimming. Nothing mentioned on website.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
