speakers stands @ 2400

While that maybe true the problem here is if I take into consideration the size of the top & base plates, their weight should be at least 1 kg each.... This would mean the weight of the rod suporting the actual weight of the speaker & top plate is less than a KG in weight... Not too durable if u ask me... So basically u dont have a 5kg speaker on a 2-3kg stand but rather on a 1kg(or less) rod... Pls check to find out the correct weight...

PS I am in no way even remotely a speaker stand expert... In fact I have never owned speaker stands... I am just trying to talk from a common sense point of view...

I think that heavy weight stands are necessary not only to support speakers but to be acoustically inert as well. The whole idea of stand is first , to get speakers placed at appropriate level and second, not to add colouration to sound by intrinsic vibrations. A light weight stand is more prone to vibrations. Experts, please corrct me if I am wrong. Adding sand to centarl rod is a good idea but then the rod has to be strong enough to withstand weight of the sand in addition to speakers. Some bookshelves are pretty heavy, more than 10kg!

Yes My powered M Audio BX -8 a are 12 Kgs each!
Trying to make a DIY stand top & bottom plates are wood and in between I will be using sand filled 6 inch dia PVC pipe.. Let me see how it turns up!

hemantbhai,

BS this heavy needs good stands.. and you know where to go to when you need a sound foundation

:-))

Sand filled PVC pipes may not be the way forward.. look at something more solid. PVC pipes will have a tendency to expand / crack.

sand filling - try with only heavy stands first.. if you are Ok with sound then no need for sand.. else try the sand. Dont put the sand in the beginning itself.

the pic in the first post is of the 1st gen SAL alif Stands from SoundFoundations

For the price, the stands you have got are decent
congratulations

the dimns are fine except for the height ( purely my opinion)

what you need to keep in mind is the THICKNESS and weight and manufacturing process of all parts
Pillar mfg process ( is it just a square pipe bought off the steel market or are they single piece sealed cast pillars that are turned to be perfectly perpendicular )

the SAL alif weighs 21kgs unfilled
uses a 10mm thk base plate and 6.5mm thk top plate
uses 4 mm thick sealed CAST pillars
uses CNC turned TRUE spikes ( not just pointed bolts/screws as many budget stands basically use)
utilities sand blasting before premium powder coat so the coat is less prone to scratching or chipping over the long run
When this stand was designed it was built to be stable enough and safe from inquisitive kids

A good speaker stand is more than sandwiching a pipe between two iron plates

In fact an ideal stand is one that would weigh quite a bit and is fully filled
has no dismantalable parts
is perfectly perpendicular
and weighs enough that you cant even move it
it should even pass the knock test with a stethoscope if possible

of course building such a stand though possible it proves too challenging to ship and hence only rare stand manufacturers attempt it
I know of only a couple pair of stands in India that get all the ticks

Agree with magma. I bought 2 pairs from him. One is used to WF 9.2 and windows glass shakes with sound before stand. And every source sounds better in that setup. Stand really makes difference, no doubt about that. Another is waiting for GR research Encores.

Not making fun of anybody,,, Serious....Just curious to learn about weight factor of an BS Stand<"'.|.">

Can a concrete stand or an Stone stand which weighs more than iron stand sound good ???

Like these ....http://www.visionbaliexport.com/furniture/interior-furniture/bathroom-decor/images/WTF-018af.jpg

The more you read about stands/material/isolation , the more confused you get. At least that is what happened to me. Finally I decided to get heaviest that I could afford and got the stands from Magma. The change is sound was immediately evident. I feel that concrete stands should work the best but that is just my guess. I wanted to try keeping 5 paver blocks one above other for trial but no dealer was ready to sell 10 blocks as they sell truck loads only.
