Step down Transformer

Thanks very much for your help...I think I will educate myslef more before going to the local manufacturers...Do you think it makes sense to go for 2 separate devices - step down isolation transformer and a separate voltage transformer?

You are right about the isolation bit as I have been told and read that isolation helps in protecting your equipment incase of power surges...

If I were to do all over again.

1. Whole home voltage stabilizer at the mains, if need be surge and lighting protector. I am not sure if that's going to be one device or couple.

2. Step down transformers where ever necessary, isolation type, regular transformer model. To make it more clear, not servo.

3. for safe shut down, Online UPS. Just enough capacity for the expensive gear and with a minimum of 30 minute back up on full load/capacity of the UPS.

If you go local for an Online UPS, they can customize the output to 110v or 100v but I wouldn't go that route, as there are couple pitfalls. Hard to find a buyer later and if your power requirements increase later, its a big burden on the wallet.

I'm sure Panditji will play the role of panditji, and share his knowledge..

Rahul, for your application having a UPS is probably not as essential as if you had a projector which needs backup power to power down to lengthen bulb life. Accordingly clean power is your need, so plan accordingly.

You're absolutely right George..I just need a good voltage stabilizer which gives me decent power to feed the isolation step down transformer which needs to be accurate..Hopefully shall have the amplifier by the end of the month and should be able to post impressions ...

Guys need to bump up this thread for some urgent help, I have a step down transformer powering my marantz av7005 but the hum of the transformer is driving me nuts. Would love to know a solution which can eliminate the noise completely if possible and if that's not feasible minimize it to maximum extent feasible. I'm based out of Delhi presently, local solutions would therefore be most preferred.

You can not reduce the humming noise of an existing transformer as it is dependant on the construction of the transformer stack/ winding.
You will have to replace it with a better one.

@Panditji,

can you contact yamaha center india for "SMPS" change in your AVR.

@All,
Will this work/safe to change SMPS and use japan/US avr as regular one.

Not sure if Yamaha will entertain a Luxman amplifier...also need to check first if the smps can be changed within the internal circuitry or it needs to be replaced with a new one..

Is the humming there from the beginning or has it recently started? Also just curious from where was the transformer purchased and if it is 100v or 110v?

Unfortunately the humming noise was present earlier too, its only gotten worse with age ( its a two year old TX). Its a 110v step down which I had bought it from Ashish of avenue sound, Mumbai. Any pointers on source of a relatively noise free transformer in Delhi would be appreciated.

I still have'nt bought one as yet but based on some feedback on the forum, you can contact Maxine transformers in Chennai..I have been talking to them about a step down transformer myself but waiting to get my amplifier first before I order.

you can contact Amit Shah at 9840687174 and [email protected] ..give him my reference and he should be able to help you since he has 110V transformers in ready stock.. There are a number of people in and around Delhi as well but since I have no experience dealing with them and got no recommendations for any so cannot help you...although you could take your transformer to a couple of manufacturers and ask them for the problem..

Many a time physically isolating the transformer or putting a weight (books) on the top, assuming there are no venting holes in the top can help reduce the humming...

Has worked for me! :)

I have an 3kv servo step down from maxine, chennai with zero hum right from the start. I am assuming only transformer based, make that hum, I am just throwing it in the dark, as I have no experience with any transformer based step down.

How much were the damages for this step down ?
And are maxine products available in Delhi ?

Thanks panditji have written to Mr Shah, let's see what he says

around 8K for an 3kva step down with built in stabilizer.

I am from Hyderabad so no idea on availability of maxine in Delhi. But believe me you are better of getting it directly shipped from maxine, chennai; you get a better price.

Isolation types are not generally available with dealers also. Shah Electronics at chennai will do it on request. You can get a quote via email.Contact no (44) 28415874, ask for one Mr. "CK". Their email address is [email protected] . You would get immediate response.
