Stepped in to the Vinyl World

I don't agree to you Sir.

You can visually see the condition of LP's which you intent to buy. You have lot of options to buy new cartridge and now even new LP's. Hence buying anything whatever comes to your way be it good or bad is out of question. One needs some maturity & exposure to select good ones from damages or worn-out ones.

It is a question of enjoying the format or not. If one enjoys it, he will like to go through the whole process and rituals of playing & maintaining the system, LP's etc.

Don't think that I am discouraging you, but....welcome to music hell. Once you enter this hell, you join the run....run for good cartridges, run for discs....since it is not easily available, you grab whatever that comes in your way, and believe me, out of 10 discs you buy, only 3 or 4 will be good, good in the sense, on which all tracks play uninterrupted, and has good sound quality. The remaining will be either badly recorded or full of scratches, dust which constantly gives that screeching, hissing and howling sounds. Unless you are retired and confined at home, this hobby is going to give you headaches. I am a person who entered this hell and later backed out after incurring a loss of around 55k.

Very valid points and perfectly agree. However some of us are really crazy and do very crazy things in life, and get a kick out of doing it. Congrats on limiting your spend to 55k (INR I assume), I've crossed a figure slightly more than your's but with an additional zero :ohyeah:

Sorry to hear about your analogue experience. The points you make are perfectly right. Lots of my friends who are not in to this audio hobby also find it strange that why bother about this media and efforts involved. I have given away speakers and players free to friends who at first were very enthusiastic but later gave up. So what I gather is some are attracted to this by nostalgia, some by curiosity, some want to relive their past experience, Some make informed choice that the music and its recording they like is not available on other media. Which player were you using ? I think if bought brand new you will loose some money selling it. Otherwise with second hand turntable and vinyls you will not.
Regards.

This depends upon the individual whether it is hell or heaven:) and surprised to Hear that you stopped at 55k as the few steps itself will Eat away that budget nowadays. Moreover, the little cracking and hissing in the initial few seconds adds a feeling to the music and also goes away when i raise the volume slightly( not loudly). I do not know whether that hissing goes away or my mind filters that from the music:).

And always, any hobby comes with a price and everyone has a hobby:lol:

If you take the hardware part, in both vinyl and the digital world, the cost of the equipment can be fixed by the budget which can start from around 20/30k for decent start and then go endless.
But when it comes to the software part (I mean the music), the digital world is a clear winner as it can be as low as Rs. 0 to a few hundred rupees, but that privilege cannot be had in the vinyl world. The even more critical part is storage and maintenance which is almost nil for the digital media whereas quite high for the vinyl world.
So even though Vinyls are slowly making their way back, it will never be the mainstream anymore because of the practical limitations of cost, sourcing and maintenance.

Vinyl can not be compared with cds or any other media. In earlier years vinyle was the only mode available for listening music of your choice. Otherwise, it was only short/medium wave radio, sound quality of which was certainly not the best. Like all other things of those days( kerosene lamps, steam press, fountain pen etc) record players also required elaborate preparation & arrangements before they could be used. The ease of smoking a cigarette can not be compared with the romance of smoking a cigar or pipe- cigar cutter & all that. The ceremony of taking out your favorite LP , cleaning it, preparing the TT etc, for 20 minutes of pure bliss is unbeatable.

Preth30, when it comes to Bollywood and Indian classical, a good vinyl set up is way way superior to a digital set up. Reason is primarily because of the mastering. And yes the digital set up I owned was top of line and cost over 15 lakhs. I have heard cd and vinyl of the same title side by side on my set up. Every time the vinyl sounded superior

hell or heaven or haven its all the mind set for listening and spending time to yourself or with like minded people. Do agree vinyl storage , handling and maintenance is a challenge which i face with over 6000 in my collection.

Iam not able to quit the habit of buying Lps and try to take when ever i get something good and new.

So analogue and digital are two streams; which is better than the other is an endless discussion to techies and non techies........

we have formed a whats app group and facebook group page called: Kovai Vinyl Enthusiasts and Coimbatore vinyl collectors so a group of local mates keep exchanging informations help each to do their setup and collections available.
We also had a vinyl gettogether and another on ramzaan eve.
