I have recently bought an SONY w850 47". I dont have a proper audio setup and I feel this is the time for me to setup one.

Previously I had an idea of buying HTiB sets. But I miss that WOW factor.

Here is what i want and what is required out of it.

I am not an pure audiophile and have sparse knowledge of receivers and speakers.

My dad really loves music and has a very big desire to have a proper music system and listen to his 90's songs and others ..
Unfortunately he coudnt get a proper guide who can select proper components and configure it.
My Dad is really ready to spend around 100k and has been asking me to get him a proper speaker system.I dont either have an idea of speakers and receivers. So i am solely dependent on you people.

What he demands from the box:

Clear, crisp music, minute sounds andthat ability to produce individual instrument sounds with great clarity.
He doesnt want just bass and volume which irritates us,but the quality deep bass and muscularity.Hope you could underatand better than my stupid explanation.

Not the extreme high budget studio components  .But the best quality ones that a common man can afford.Hope you understand

Also we will be using this as home theatre, playing blu rays and expect good surround sound experience.Propably a that makes me wow !

People have already insisted me to buy decent individual components.I have decided to buy a good av receiver and speakers

I am at this point ready to spend arount 60-70K and then if wanted spend more money later upgrade more speakers.

my hall photo in attachment
40% space on back apart from the front area in the pic.

Currently I have this idea. Please feel free to alter my idea and post suggestions.

A good AV receiver around 30K.
A pair of quality floorstand speakers/bookshelf.
A centre speaker.

If budget permits get a pair of rear speakers and a good subwoofer.

I have searched TDF and found these suggestions by incinerator

Denon 1612 AV receiver
Jamo S426 HCS3 5 speaker package
Jamo Sub 260.

Also i found these over . Donno how much value it has

Yamaha NS555 towers (21k)
Polk Tsx330T (13.5k for 1tower ?)

I live in Chennai.
Suggest me something that i cam get my hands on and does support repair facilities.

If ur Dad is interested only in music , then amp and two floor standers enough.but if he wants to enjoy both music and movies then he has to go for av receivers and 5.1 speakers.denon 1612 is an old model , dont look yamaha for speakers. You can goto Profx chennai mount road branch, opposite to tvs. and audition denon x1000 ,x500 avrs and polk tsx 330 is good floor standers both for movies (excellent) and music(good).

(u can get 12%-15% discount)
------------------------------
polk tsx 330 30k mrp
polk tsx 110c book shelves 14k mrp
polk tsx 150b centre

based on ur like u can choose.

you can also look sonodynes sia amp i think, sonodyne 2605 floor standers, elangoas is expert of sonodyne speakers he is from chennai only.you can take his help.

mean there heco victa speakers you can hear the same from Profx these also good speakers for music interest.

you have good budget of 1 lac.Audition and buy accordingly.

Hi,

Good AVRs are honestly hard to find due to stiff competition and ofcourse most brands are become somewhat commercial where everyone wants to make a quick buck and not ensure quality and performance....used AVRs for 11 + years (almost all brands).....I would recommend you to choose between Cambridge Audio, NAD or Marantz....Some of these are available on HiFi Mart or you can check with your local dealer. I use a Marantz NR 1402 (discontinued..you can go for NR 1504) with Boston Acousctic Soundware XS 5.1 speakers in a 200 sq ft area at 45% volume and the performance is awesome for music and movies....

Which ever speakers fit in your budget...you need to ensure that their sensitivity levels is atleast 85-88db and above..the impedance is almost same like the AVR and they can deliver continuous frequencies between (20hz - 20khz) ....try window shopping and check out all the Home Theatre systems available at various dealers in Chennai...am sure a simple google search will yield some names and addresses...take your favourite music and movies for the audition...You can click on my user name to read related posts which will assist in your decision...all the best

:) thanks buddy.. am no expert with Sonodyne, but have used them in various combos...Always glad to help reg Sonodyne & for any FM queries...

Welcome to HFV (Vanakkam).... Congrats on your new TV....

For 70K initial budget & 30- 35K budget for AVR you can consider Denon, Pioneer & Yamaha.....Scout for an year old AVR models and you could get good disounts...:ohyeah:

Looking @ pics of your room, i think you are better off with bookshelf + Subwoofer combo.....

For speakers i suggest you to audition some brands @ these places...

Profx in Mount Road : They have Polk Tsx series, Denon AVR... There are other speakers as well, but will not fit your budget....

Vipul Audio (Kilpauk Cemetery) : Mr. Praveen - He deals with Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer AVR's, DALI & Roth speakers...

Grand Cinema (Kodambakkam) : They deal with Marantz AVR, Wharfedale, Paradigm speakers...

Decibel (Kotturpuram) - Mr. Raghu - He deals with PSB & other bigger brands, you can try PSB Alpha series there..

Unfortunately for Sonodyne, there are no dealers in chennai @ the moment where you can take an audition..

There are few other dealers also for speakers, but very expensive....

Take a good demo @ all these places with your music/movie collection, come here & share your feedback... & then we can narrow it down...

asking again

In every post you talk about marantz - but marantz gives honest specs for AVR??

for your dads requirement, to get all minute details, you will need not only good speakers but also a good amp to pair with it. source depends on what you are using. ideally i would spend pretty much equal amounts on the speakers and the amplifier. if you want floorstanders, then the kef q500's are good. so is the monitor audio bronze br series. if your room size is smaller and you wont be listening to loud music, the you can go for the monitor audio silver series bookshelves. i suggest you go to a monitor audio outlet and audition bronze floorstanders vs silver bookshelves. you will get an idea of whether you want fs or bs. you should take your dad with you. not only will he understand better of what to buy but he will also enjoy the process.

once you decide on the speakers, we can help you with an amp to match. the brands to consider are nad / cambridge / marantz

I am so sorry that i couldn't respond properly.
I was in a Medical camp and was away a few days.

I myself find myself very illiterate to buy separate components and Build an HT.I feel so uncomfortable and researching.
I Don't think i can do this without a friend who knows well about these and can build me one.
Is there some shop which can do it for me ?

So I am thinking of getting an 50K HTiB.
Please suggest me something Like the Yamaha 299 or something Higher than That.
(In INDIA)
Thank you !

Hi TheMost

The YHT299 is somewhat an entry level Home Theatre which will work well to a certain extent. It would be advisable to go and audition as many systems as you can before shortlisting a few brands which appeal to you and your budget.....

Some of us HFV members have regular systems or real high end audiophile gear....it all depends on how deep you are willing to get into technicalities and detail to achieve the ultimate Home Theatre Experience....

Home Theatre dealers would definitely offer their assistance to pair up a good AVR receiver with matching speakers...the key here is you need to provide your listening area measurements and budget.....the dealer would provide you suitable options which then you can list down for us to provide our comments and recommendations.....

Also don't forget, there are lot of user reviews and videos available over the internet to guide you further....

Hope this helps....take your time and audition as many models you can.....await your list...

If you buy HTiB, then also you have to do the same thing what you have to do if you buy separate component. You have to buy AVR and wire the speakers with them. So you effort will be the same.HTiB is more than enough for movie, but not that good for music.

Here are some configuration you can try:
Front : Wharfadale Diamond 10.1/ Dali Zensor 1/ Cambridge Audio S30/ Q Acoustics 2020i/2010i : Any of them should be within 25K range.
Center & Surround : Yamaha NS-P60 : It should be around 11K
Sub : Polk Audio PSW110/PSW125 : Check the ProFX site : it is 18.5K/24K
And for AVR : Denon X1000 should be OK.
And if you want to go through the HTiB way : Audition the Cambridge Audio Minx HTiB.

if the setup is mainly used for music you should buy a stereo set up. surround sound is not required. music is recorded in 2 channel stereo and movies etc are recorded in 7.1 channel surround sound

^ Ok.Thank You.

I have spoke to those shops and they have promised me to Give a demo.
Got struck up in career.
I will audition it and update.

Thank You.

if you are going for separates always try to keep the same speakers for optimum timbre matching with the exception of subwoofer. Select any receiver but stick with the same speakers. Do not mix and match different brand speakers for fronts/centre/surrounds.

I just checked Marantz SR7008

9.2 amplification

125 Watts per channel for 9 channels

125 x 9 = 1125 watts

Now Power consumption is Just 710 watts

as per my limited understanding in any sytem Consumption is less than output.
In case of amps it is around 50 %

so @Arjun4 and @efernandes can you beat my mats??

Now it has wattage 710 W

Of the AVR's from Big Brands, I think Onkyo Top end models cross 1000 Watts power consumption....

Against how much claimed Power Output?

That is around 250 - 280w/Channel @ 6 Ohms 1 channel driven :ohyeah:.. Yes it is marketing team credit/Technical writer credit

But in general, from what i seen,Onkyo AVR's have more power consumption than other AVR from any other brand....

Letz leave the power rating per channel discussion....

Now Marantz SR 7008 is a 9.2 Channel AVR.. Total power consumption is 710W..

Onkyo TX NR 929 is also a 9.2 channel AVR.. Total power consumption is 870W..

Onkyo TX NR 818 is 7.2 Channel AVR... Total power consumption is 720W...

My 2 cents, here goes.

There are two ways to go about it.

A) Have a separate HT system and a separate stereo system only for music.

B) Have a combined system which does both music and movie duties, in case budget or space is a constraint.

Once you decide which way the two of you (your Dad and you) want to go, other expert FMs can pitch in.

I personally prefer a combined system for both budget and space restrictions.

I will try to give a general idea, other FMs can correct me for any errors.

1) If you are going for a combined system, a good full featured AVR is the way to go. Probably one with a HDMI 2.0, as it makes your AVR reasonably future proof, but in pre owned you might have to give up some features.

2) Enough inputs and outputs to fulfill your present and future needs.

3) Making sure it has enough power to drive your speakers and some head room to spare.

4) Once an AVR has been selected by you, then there will be certain speakers which will sound better with your AVR. Some combos which come to my mind are Onkyo + B&W, Marantz + Boston, Yamaha + B&W, Denon + KEF etc. There are of course many more.

5) Making sure of bill and warranty etc.

6) It also makes sense to buy pre owned, as you get great gear at good prices, so there is another avenue to explore.

With the hope that this starts you off on the right track.
