If you have growing collection > 100 to store currently then better get a covered glass rack where records can be kept vertically but I would recommend put individual vinyl card board envelope inside polythene sleeves to protect the original covers as they tend to wear out with regular handling. Check TT link in my signature

I keep them in a wooden cabinet (covered). Suggest you use use spacers for every 10 LPs so that it is easier to put them in and out of the cabinet.

+1, I use spacers bought from Landmark. These are spacers used for separating books in the shelf. I too store in wooden cupboard which does not get direct sunlight and away from external wall which could get heated by sunlight.

Only care required not rubbing external paper jacket in this metal edges. Applying transparent tape on edges helps. But that's rare as I already put polythene bags to cover outer jackets.

This is a good topic, because storing (and cleaning) records is probably my biggest headache!! I have a 3 shelves in my room that I use to store my records, and I also have 3 acrylic boxes (i am not sure if it's acrylic, maybe some kind of polymer) that are stacked on top of one another. I put balance records in an old TV stand unit, and whatever is left is in cardboard boxes. *phew* Will upload some pics of the shelves and boxes soon

Assuming one keeps the vinyl rack in the room one plays music in, it makes a brilliant diffuser if kept against the facing wall or even behind the speakers. The basic rack is simply rows of wooden compartments to hold LPs so too many don't fit in one compartment, with space between the top of the LP and the shelf base above it. Tons of designs via image google search to get inspired from. Can be one huge wall to wall rack or can be modular with individual rows that can be stacked or individual cubes that stack up side by side and on top of each other for easy dismantling and packing up.

Regards

wondering where can I buy these in ncr.

If you are asking about spacers then they are from stationary section of Landmark. May be part of metal furniture store which sells bookshelf/Library storage.

Lot of good suggestions. I am lucky to make one rack of our miscellenous items almirah vacant to store LPs. About 150 LPs could be stored there. Balance are kept in two covered cabinets till I create space for making one dedicated LP storage rack. Which type of racks - covered or open is better? I personally prefer covered rack. What is the general practice?

Malvai has built some racks and uses them as diffussers too as stevieboy has suggested. I have been meaning to make one or two racks like them but have not got around to it yet.

Some years back audiophiles and a few high end turntable manufacturers used to suggest a very well defined / recommended way to store vinyls -
They should be stacked horizontally in groups of not more than 10 vinyls in their paper sleeves and covers. If the vinyls are less than 180 grams, upto 12 vinyls can be stored in such a manner. The next group of 10 vinyls should be on another solid surface and so on. I had seen a rack for doing so once which had a height of a couple of inches for every shelf for preventing wastage of space in such a storage method.

That was what they used to suggest sometime back. For me it was not practical and so I store almost all my vinyls vertically with a stack of books at one end to prevent them from falling over. I don't have any mobile fidelity or any similar records.

Interesting feedback gentlemen! Keep them comming
While we discuss storing can I get to know how are you cleaning your Vinyls? What in your experience is the most effective way to clean them?
I recently bought 70 LP's. Most of these used records may have gone thru a lot of wear and tear over the years of use! I am yet to play all of them. Only a keen sense of hearing can assess the condition of the record. I mean you can still hear the song but the quality may have dropped. What say you?

we've had vinyl stored at home from the 1960s, arranged vertically from left side board to right side board in a teak-wood almirah. they're never got warped or anything, still in great condition. this collection is now around 500. the key here is that there were never tightly packed and at the same time, not loosely packed.

After an endless search and too many design ideas, finally found this at an unlikely place and I am currently using this shelf for storing LPs. Not too big but good for few hundred records I collected in a year.
Aurich Display Unit

Did anyone mention the obvious? Keep them upright! Without too much pressure from the sides. Keep well away from any source of heat. In this country, that should probably even include sunlight from the window!

Good storage for vinyl in incompatible with showing it off. If you want to display, keep the albums+sleeves stored properly and display the empty sleeves.

Below is a photo of my cupboard made of wood and each row can hold nearly 100 LPs or more.. Alternately you can build square cubes of wood (15 inch cube)of which the inside dimensions should give ample clearance of approx 1 inch so that one can stack cube on top of each as the collection grows.
Regards

Finally got around to getting my Vinyl/CD/DVD storage unit made. I have to say it is a Godsend!! It's so nice to finally have all my records in one place. There's still space for maybe another 150-200 records as well :D

Found this at craiglist @ 4500...
it's sort of the same as thomacho had posted a few days back...
I have around 50 LPs and 15 EPs which I guess, is very minimal compared to the gigantic size of this shelf..

can anyone suggest if this would be OK?

this sounds perfect, especially for someone who collects at a slower pace. i guess ill make mine in accordance.

i was also thinking of having each section protrude out by an inch alternatively to create a sort of diffuser. just need to think of a feature wherein i can cover the LP's when not in session to prevent it from dust, light, moisture, probably have a sliding/removable door which could slide behind or on top of this unit..
