Storing Vinyls - Ideas

@Thad - thanks for the tip. It's not actually leaning that much. That one on the bottom right that looks like it's leaning bad is actually a pack of MoFi inner sleeves and some 10" records. I straightened them out though :P

If anyone's interested in knowing what's ON those shelves, you can check out the list here :)

awesome collection tek!!

Found this at craiglist @ 4500...
it's sort of the same as thomacho had posted a few days back...
I have around 50 LPs and 15 EPs which I guess, is very minimal compared to the gigantic size of this shelf..

can anyone suggest if this would be OK?

Hi
Please be careful when you buy readymade shelves made from MDF etc since the load bearing capacity is minimal when you plan to store many LPs. The shelf will start to buckle in course of time.Always store LPs in shelf made of wood.

Regards

As a colleague remarked as an MDF unit in the office collapsed, "Ah! Limited shelf life!"

LPs are, indeed, heavy --- as anyone who has filled up a box with them, and then tried to pick it up, will know. They might even be heavier than books.

If the segments are not too long, and they are properly supported on three sides, even MDF might be ok, but also the same amount of support should be given to solid/ply wood, or it too will sag.

I use IKEA expedit shelves for storing LP's and I understand these are not available in India. I would recommend these to anyone in a heartbeat, if you can find one.

But I would have thought folks in India could build shelves to suit their space and aesthetics, thru a competent carpenter. They certainly would be more bang for the buck than buying something off Ikea or Walmart. Cheap labor has it's benefits, right?? :D

@quad: that Houseful link goes to bookshelf which has depth of 11.5" only. You need atleast 12.5" for LP records. Also keeping that much weight on topper shelves makes it easy to cripple if its not well made. At the vertical joint of shelf panel criss cross joint is required. Material must not be MDF but commercial ply or solid wood is welcome. This is my own experience.

I have placed my records on shelves that are in a slight angle. The depth is also about half and inch or so less. Would that be a major issue?

BLAIR BOOKCASE

This is the one I saw first - Depth of 13.2 "

I'll update about the build quality etc once I get to check it out in person.

i liked the idea of keeping the space for 10-12 lp per section, the virtue of this design would be that the wood would have better support and it'd be almost impossible to bend. secondly, one could keep Lp's perfectly straight. i plan to make one with this in mind, the only difference, instead of placing it horizontal, would place it vertically.

Not at all, but if you want you can place stiff cardboard below them to protect album covers from edges of the rack. Sometimes we vinyl addicts think too much because we love vinyls, so if you are still worried I will give you 45rpm version of those albums which will fit in nicely. In exchange ofcourse :D

If you think of the circle within the square, the important bit is being supported in the centre of the album cover, so I guess that some overlap doesn't matter.

I am, though, fussy about keeping LPs upright as storing at an angle can result in warping.

Its time to get meself a shelf now. Just inherited a box full of 45s and 33s so need bigger storage space now.

This thread has been helpful. Most probably will build a custom design shelf.

Cheers...

I will be more than happy to provide you with a storage area in my house:D

Anyway, custom built shelves are the best option, as most of what is sold in the market is either not suitable for vinyls, or pretty expensive. By custom designing, you can choose the basic layout & more importantly the exact dimensions where you want to fit the shelf.

Oh...how I missed that...please don't forget to add spacers or divide the racks in a way that one sub-console does not holds more than 8-10 lps. In this manner, you not only avoid a warped lp, but also if you keep them in a classified manner, it will help you dig out the wanted title quickly. Also use wood, it attracts less moisture compared to metal.

Do design the cabinet yourself & stick to your design even if your carpenter advises otherwise. I left the designing work on my carpenter and now I have probably the most expensive shoe-rack on the forum!

Regards.

Gents - I got me self a 4 shelf rack back in Feb 2013. It's perfectly designed to store the 33s. Each shelf holds about 50-60 LPs and made of solid wood with a glass door.

Now the problem is, in Feb I had forecasted that I would not need a biigger shelf as I though my collection would not exceed more than 200 LPs and now I have a much bigger collection of 33s, 45s and 78s and no more storage space available!!

LPs are all over my room. Its looks like a storage room now :(. As a temp solution I have used cardboard boxes to store them vertically, however I noticed cardboard boxes dont have much life and loose shape. Now I am thinking of making wooden boxes to store 20-30 LPs and place these boxes in one end of the room (boxes covered for dust).

I'm sure many FMs here face similar issues. What have you done for alternate storage?
