Subwoofers Front firing or Down Firing? Passive or Powered?

A humble question to all those in the forum who have done some survey on different company and different types of Sub-Woofers [Front firing or Down Firing? Passive or Powered?] or possess a good Knowledge on which Sub-Woofer to buy based on their performances.

I am asking this question as I am new to this forum and I am planning to buy a Subwoofer for my DENON AVR 1612.

Kindly suggest me one. Thanks a lot in advance!!!

um.. am no more than an amateur/noob but .. was wondering. your 'Kindly spend some time reading this and letting me know which sub I should buy'... what did you mean by this ??? is it the lines or did you mean to add a link but accidentally/unknowingly forgot ?.. (Am a bit confused so.. pls don't mind..)

OK now that the thread starter is cleared You already have a Denon 1612 sitting packed in your home... and you have yet to buy speakers... my questions are :

1. Whats the main interest for your setup ?? Is it for movies or music or both ?? If so give a rough % for movies/music please?

Also let me remind you that for music alone it is mostly preferred to have a 2.0 or a 2.1 as most of the music untill now is in that 2 Channel Stereo mode
2. Whats your budget for the speakers and the subwoofer?

3. Whats your room size? LxBxH?

I guess these questions are good to begin with for the gurus around here ..

there is no proven fact that downfiring vs front firing better or not..
you anyway need a powered(with an amp wala) sub...which u will connect from denon 1612 sub pre out..
there are subs at 15k range..
astonia,wharfe,sonodyne roar,polk audio...for your room size a very powerful sub will be wastage of money...a under 15k is enough..also considering ur tught budget..
well i am assuming and giving suggestions for a movie case..

for music i cannnot consider myself to give any suggestion...hehe
