Hi, I am looking to purchase >40" HDTV. Around 55K budget. The TV will be used mostly for SD/HD viewing (DTH) and also for playback of movies/TV shows from my external hard disk. I had Sony Bravia 40EX-430 almost finalized. But after going through threads here on a few Plasma models from Panasonic, I'm really confused.. Could you guys please suggest a good model?

U can try the 42UT50 Plasma. I guess you would get the TV in that range. and if you stretch your budget you can even buy a 50UT50 for around 70K. You could also have a look at 42ST30, if available. It is the last years model.

I have recently auditioned all Sony/Panasonic/Samsung/LG and have more or less decided on the 50UT50 model.

Go and audition the TV and choose the one you feel is the best.

Prasanth, Thanks for your suggestion. The model you recommended is selling for 70K in Flipkart. Since the Panasonic India site doesn't display the MRP for TVs, I guess the prices in stores will be pretty much around 70K.

Also, what is your take on the much dreaded IR/BI issues with Plasmas?

Well, Plasmas have the best picture quality till date. They have perfect backlighting which makes it to deliver the best picture quality.
If you are deciding on plasma's, go for panasonic.

^^ Thanks Indian.. I saw some comments elsewhere in the forum that only those Panny plasmas with Neo PDP are worth going for.. I believe the neo pdp Panny Plasmas cost well above 70K.. That is way beyond my budget..

Which model are you looking at flipkart. Go to the panny showroom in koramamgla and ask them. I am getting the 50 inch for 74k in Pune And hence I feel you can get the 42 inch at a lower price.

UPDATE Pice in Infibeam: 58000.

I am still a noobie in this field. But from what I have read, Plasma are still prone to IR and Burn Ins. You need to take care of your TV a bit atleast.
Few tips for the first 200 hrs of TV.
1) Watch the TV in zoom mode and avoid watching the TV is 4:3 Format.
2) Don't watch any channel for more that 30 min at a stretch.
3) Try to take a DTH Provider who has a transparent logo V Opaque Logo.

I am still learning. Will add on this later. meanwhile any senior FM can probably throw more light on this.

^^ Thanks Prasanth.. My TV will be mostly used by my parents.. Not sure if they can give a Plasma all the care that is required.. Is the quality of a decent Plasma (UT50D for instance) that better than a good Sony LED (Bravia 40 EX 550) so as to bear the troubles (caring, all the tension) :) Sorry for being so naive.. I am a bigger noob than you when it comes to HDTVs..

LCD TV is a better option - if willing to spend more, go for LED.

^^Thanks Just4Kix.. Could you please suggest a few decent LCD/LED TVs in this price range? (around 55K)

You can easily get a Samsung 5 series LED or 4 series LCD. LG had so many models that it is difficult to remember numbers. Sony will have models on the CX series. Check out Philips, Toshiba, etc.

Demo the models and choose what you like best.

get the sony 40ex430, its a good set, avoid plasma as they require special care which is not possible with your family, parents etc.

Thanks etios and just4kix.. had a demo of 42UT50 today in a Panasonic Brandshop.. The quality was so mindblowing that I am beginning to get inclined towards a Plasma :)..The price quoted is Rs.68K.. As for 40ex430, I believe that model uses an old picture engine.. Need to have demos of a few Bravia & Samsung models before making up my mind..

Plasma is definitely in a different league altogether. I do not even have to rant the plasma benefits here. I was myself heavily inclined to 46HX850 till 50ST50 "came, saw and conquered".

But as you had said that it will be parents who will be main users, I suggested otherwise, i.e., LED. Plasma needs careful handling to make sure that Image retention does not occur. You should go with LCD/LED, if your parents are the main users (90%) and mostly going to watch TV/DTH. Plasma will be better, if you are the main user and going to watch movies mostly.

When you compare 42UT50 with 40EX430, there is no real comparison. The 42UT50 must be compared to the 40HX750 or 40HX850, the Samsung 7 Series, etc. While the 42UT50 is just 68K quoted and can be bargained for 63-64K, the 40HX750 or 40HX850 are much more expensive at negotiated prices of 77,900 and 87,900 respectively.

^^ Thanks just4kix.. I had almost made up my mind to go for the Sony LED till this demo happened.. I feel that if I can get my parents & family to follow the common IR prevention steps, I can still go for the Plasma :).. I am using an Airtel DTH connection.. Will the DTH logo increase the probability of IR & BI? Also, there is another Panny model, XT50 model selling at 52K.. But it is not Full HD.. At 40" does Full HD vs HD ready really matter? I for one, could not tell them apart in the showroom..

Image retention is something to be careful about but can be tackled: Prevent Image Retention and Burn-in.

All kinds of static images such as DTH logo, channel logo, news tickers, etc., when displayed over a long period can result in IR. Airtel logo is especially strong unlike others.

As far as XT50 vs. UT50, you are absolutely spot on - it does not make a large difference for DTH, even for HD channels. You will not be able to make much difference in normal viewing. Please refer to the XT50 thread started by arnprasad. Only when you watch true HD/full HD 1080p stuff via blu-ray, there will be some difference. The HD-Ready TV will be show slight jagged edges for sharp objects and text.

^^ Thanks again dude.. Just adding to my previous post about the demo-Even in a well lit showroom, the quality was better than a Panasonic LED next to it.. I couldn't compare the plasma to a Bravia as it was a Panny Brandshop..But I guess it would be as good or even better than any mid range Sony LED.. I just learnt that the 42" UT50 has been discontinued by Panasonic as of September.. Does that mean the 42" UT50 units currently sold by the retailers are old units?

UT50 is very much an active model, afaik.
