Hi,

Guzarish DVD played through LG DVD Player > Digital coaxial > AVR (Yamaha 371).
Set up in DVD > all Bitstream > DVD menu = 5.1 channel audio
2 Front and 2 rear speakers are attached to AVR.
When I click 'Surround Sound' buton in AVR remote it displays 'Straight' in the AVR. Altough I hear sound from all the speakers but I'm not sure if the sound is actually in surround mode.

Options under 'surround mode' are 'Dolby Prologic' and different versions of it.

Is there a better way to check if the surround function in AVR is woking fine?

If the dvd player is set to bitstream, then your AVR should be showing Dolby Digital or DTS depending on the audio track you selected, and not any prologic options. If you select surround modes, then you won't get that 'true surround' effect.

@ baijuxavior : Forgot to mention, the DVD does not have anywhere mentioned that its a DTS / Dolby Digital. Once connected to the DVD player and not selecting 'surround mode' the AVR does not mention any DTS / Dolby Digital. Any clue whats going on or should I show the AVR to the dealer.

May be the dvd is not 5.1. Try with another disk.
In my denon 1612 there is an option to check the input signal status. If the signal is 5.1 then it will show something like 2/2/1/1. Check your avr manual to know any such option is available.

Yamaha has a "Pure Direct" mode. Turn on that and see if sound is being sent to rear speakers.

In that mode, AVR would not apply any processing and if sound from DVD player is in stereo, it would only be sent to front speakers.

From you post, it is not clear if you have a center speaker.

If you do not have a center speaker, quite a few dialogues would be missing if sound is actually 5.1.

Yamaha has 'Straight' mode which is I guess a version of the 'Pure Direct' mode in Denon. In 'Straight' mode it does send sound to rear speakers, but the problem is, it seems that the rear speakers are 'active' (produce sound but at low volumes) all the time rather then producing the sound only when the sound is moving to the rear channels.
I dont have a centre and sub in my set-up as of now.
As per the manual when the centre is marked as 'none' the sound will be spread amongst the front left /right. I can feel thats happening correctly.

Dolby Pro Logic is a setting to convert stereo into 5.1. Ditto for Neo from DTS.

Considering its showing Dolby PLII I would say the disc is stereo. You will need to put a 5.1 DVD to have the 5.1 FX or at least check out the AVR.

In Yamaha, "Straight" and "Pure Direct" are different things. This is a pic from manual for the receiver that I have (Yamaha 665).

It has different buttons for straight and pure direct.

In pure direct mode, it would not be able to perform this since that circuit is switched off.

In pure direct mode:
1. ONLY the channels that have some input will have sound
2. Display will turn off itself. And only light up for a second when you change volume or use remote.

In that mode, display will show what kind of signal is sent. Either stereo with Dolby pro logic or real 5.1 with Dolby Digital / DTS.

press audio button of ur dvd player while playing dvd and confirm the sound track(stereo or multichannel)of the disc.in yamaha straight mode giving better sourrounds.

"In my denon 1612 there is an option to check the input signal status. If the signal is 5.1 then it will show something like 2/2/1/1. Check your avr manual to know any such option is available." This worked for me. After following this process, it seems the AVR is actually throwing Dolby Digital sound.

Net freak, thanks for clarifying this but it seems the way 665 works is completely different from how 371 works.
- First of all there is no button or option for Pure direct apart from 'Straight' mode (I cannot copy the image for some reason, please refer the manual for 371 easily available on internet, China manual in English). In 371 when 'Straight' mode is selected (and the tone is set to 0) the sound bypasses the circuitry, for stereo and also for DTS/Dolby.
BTW if 'Pure Mode' does the things you mentioned in 665, then what happens in 'Straight' mode?
- Mine is a China made, not sure if that makes any difference, but I can't think of models being completely different for different countries.

"Dolby Pro Logic is a setting to convert stereo into 5.1. Ditto for Neo from DTS." - as per the manual Dolby Pro Logic is used for processing all sorts of sound, on and above 2 channel to 5 channel sound. For ex 3 channel sound to 5 channel and 4 channel sound to 5 channel as well. Never heard of 3 or 4 channel sound though. Thanks to provoke me to search and understand the technology!

BUT strange of all is that the dislay does not show DTS/Dolby Digital etc.

In "Pure Direct" mode, things like Bass/Treble/Equalizer and compensating for missing speakers etc are disabled.

Technically, almost all DSP circuits are switched off.

This was the rage in late 80s early 90s. E.g. I watched DDLG twice in theater just to experience four track sound.

In India, only YashRaj films and Rajshree films used four track sound till 96 or so.

BUT strange of all is that the dislay does not show DTS/Dolby Digital etc.

That is the problem.

Do you have option to select audio track in your DVD player?

Most DVDs have stereo sound as well, so DVD player might be picking up stereo sound by default.
