Re: Altec 604 8G drivers finally!
Malvai,
If I remember my discussions with Rajiv, the 604s are nothing but the 416 15" woofer and 80x compression driver combined into one duplex driver. I have made the JE Labs open baffle with the 416 drivers in them and they do very well. The bass does get pretty low and is quite punchy as well. I still have a lot of work in terms of crossover and fine tuning but they definitely do very well.
There are also quite a few implementations of the 416 with the JE Labs open baffles. for example Wolf von Langa Black & White Gallery these are done with the GPA version of the 416 which wolf converts to field coil (source: Rajiv)
The thing is this, not everyone likes the open baffle sound. The JE Labs baffle is so simple that you can easily make it in about 1 hrs time. You need a large room and positioning is important, mine are about 6ft from the rear wall and I am sitting well more than 10ft away from them. If you have decent space in your room then my suggestion is you try it, the effort and cost are very minimal. You can always re-use the baffle for other projects.
