People say that once you have tried tubes, there is no going back to solid state. I would like to add that if you love music, once you have tried single ended triode amps, there's no going back to SS or push-pull amps.
The beauty of the 2A3 tube is in the glorious midrange that's where the music lives and breathes. But with the 845 you get the same benefits of the 2A3 but with a bigger soundstage. Yeah it might not to do thunderous bass or the absolutely crystal sounding highs, but what you loose in the extremes of the spectrum you gain BIG TIME in the midrange. That is where 80% of the music lives in! When I used to listen to SS amps most of the time I was trying to anlayse and dissect the music. Whereas with the 845 it will involve you into the music and you will drift into it with realising that you are tapping your toes and shaking your head.
Now on to the sound. The sound of these amps is incredible. I can only descibe the sound as wholly organic. I found that I don't listen to music like I used to. I now hear the whole band palying as one as opposed to various guys as individuals playing music together. The tone is much more life like with a texture that you can almost feel. The low level detail retrieval is fantasic. The 845 is very extended on top without any hint of harshness. Cymbals ring true and the decay is spooky. Notes just fade to black. Guitar and piano chords are vivid as you not only hear the chord but you hear all of its harmonic components. These amps, and I would imagine other SET amps, bring out harmonics that you don't realize are missing until you hear it properly done. I don't jump around and change discs like I used to as the music is much more captivating. I also don't listen in fragments I know people debate which is the better tube, the 2A3, the 300B or the 845 but for my needs the 845 was the way to go. It is a very dynamic tube which retains all of the harmonic richness that is often associated with the 300B, while providing plenty of headroom and dynamic drive and low end control.
