The Mighty SET 845

experimentation here is time taking and expensive. So if one has to prioritize money and time, where would this vibration control thing figure?

Anant, I assure you, experimentation everywhere is time consuming and expensive.

Vibration control is a healthy mix of science and art. Anyhow, I suggest you start off with pure wood platforms and brass cones.

I would experiment with Kashmiri Willow, Rosewood, Teak wood and other pure woods

Hi Shaizada
Thanks a ton
I once went looking out for pure wood to be used as shelves in a rack I was planning to buy. But I found out that as wood is in logs, large single pieces of wood are hard to find. One will need to join 2 pieces to make it to a size of a normal shelf or a platform to be used under a amp

Also is it OK to use wood directly as a shelf for a rack or it has to be coupled with some other material and is only to be used as a base for the amp?

Thats great Rikhav. I'm glad my post helped you somewhat. Try to find a nice continuous piece of wood. You want the structural properties to remain the same through the whole piece. I would personally try to avoid joining pieces.

Also, you only need pieces that are big enough to couple the points where they will make contact with the component. Even if the wood surface area is smaller than the component, thats fine as long as you can couple the two together. The cones can be placed closer together :)

If you're going to put together a rack, take a look at how Mapleshade is doing it...I think it can be done yourself as well:

dont start with a Tree. Get a 12 or 19mm 6x4 or 8x4 feet MDF or waterproof/kitchen grade sheet. The others have inconsistent inner construction.

MDF 19mm will be Rs 36/- per sq foot.

Cheers

Somewhere else on this forum I had mentioned that I use MDF in my equipment rack shelf which makes the sound warmer...and I was challenged to prove it:rolleyes:.

I use a Symposium Rollerblock under my tube preamp and it is one of the best tweak I have ever tried. It really works wonders under tube equipments.
I have tried the same rollerblock under Lyrita preamp and the results were equally astonishing. Reignofchaos was there when we tried it under his preamp.

Hi Shazada
Some things are still not clear to me
As I had asked earlier, can the wood be used directly as a shelf on a rack?
If not are cones also to be used between the wood platform and the shelf of the rack or only between the wood platform and the amp?

Wood can definitely be used directly AS the shelves of a rack AND on top of the rack as a shelf.

Cones are to be used to couple the actual component directly to the wood shelf. Experiment with pointed up and pointed down.

I've incorporated the suggestions above and have used wooden board underneath the SET 845amp. Earlier there was a glass slab. The difference is substantial as it has given firmness to the sound.

Some more pics of my baby...

Hi Sameer

I have had the Dehavilland 845 mono blocs with the Rethms for about 2 years. With high sensitivity speakers, i would prefer a low powered SET. Its quieter and more magical. Unless of course you need 25 watts, i would choose the 300 tube.

IMO, this decision would be based purely on the type of music you listen to.

845- Everest like presentation. The vigour and low frequencies conveyed.

300B-Flowery midrange presentation. Excels in Jazz, blues, soft music.

Interesting. I read an article which said that 300b tubes have one of the most transparent window into music provided the amp is well designed and the speakers used are carefully matched. The second case is normally the culprit why many people find it slow or thick.

Tube amps are known for transparency as it creates a holographic image and depth. So for those who consider this on their priorty list, will not compromise.
