I know this is the "Movies" section but as there is no TV shows section, I am posting here.

What do you think of the new "Mahabharat" on Star Plus. Being a huge Mahabharat fan myself, I started watching it. But I am very disappointed because they are showing the wrong Mahabharat by taking too many liberties.

Here is a FB page that is discussing this: Star Plus' factually incorrect Mahabharat .

Apart from being factually incorrect, I felt like watching a quick and a commercial masala movie (to be frank) with too many artificial graphics.
Also, they have missed out so many other events from the Mahabharat story.
The original TV show on Mahabharat (from B.R Chopra) was a GEM. It held the pulse of this entire nation and such was the appeal. I remember seeing all the roads and streets in my town having a deserted look between 9:00AM to 10:00AM on Sundays.

old is gold... new one no way near to get that " connect " .. its just pure drama like any other star tv soap...

no more an epic...

B R Chopra's depiction also had some errors but most were not glaringly incorrect. The most wrongful depiction by BRC was the way Abhimanyu was finally killed. Abhimanyu was killed by Dushasan's son by a blow of the mace to the head. In that serial, they show many people killing Abhimanyu. It is true many people attacked him from all sides but final death was in a different manner.

As far as this MB is concerned, actually I have nothing against the story telling being a little "filmy" as long as true story is told.

Anyway, visit the FB page and it is tracking daily errors.

Not just your town - the whole of India it was like that.

I don't know, but for me the designer and the videshi movies/series inspired costumes does not gel well with the inherent "Indianess" of "Mahabahrath".
And the actors do not seem to have the hold on the essence of each of the characters.

-Cheers!

Problem seems to me (although I could be wrong) is that actors are acting their lines and not feeling ROYAL enough, though actor playing Bheeshma seems to be quite OK.

One must also note that we as viewers have much higher expectations from any serial. When the original was launched, people didnt expect such grandiose in a TV serial.

The same is true for acting. If you watch a rerun of the old one you would probably cringe at the poor acting and direction, its just that as viewers are exposure and sophistication has increased exponentially in the 20 odd years.

My view is that the new Mahabharat is being too dramatic in certain sequences apart from being factually incorrect. The directors should take a cue from the old series and try to do justice or remake the old one with new actors. I just loved the old Mahabharat and Ramayan series. Wish they could digitally remaster them into lovely blu rays !! the DVDs are quite bad to be honest and pixellation is quite high in some episodes.

My take on Mahabharat below that I also shared on "Fans of TV series thread"

I was put down by the same old, "saas bahu" camera gimmick, over the top action, with unnecessary slomo. Plus what ever be the production value Indian camara men somehow dont know how to use the correct color grain tone. None of the out door shots appeared to be of an era that is 1000s of years old. Even though the set, costumes and presentation was good, it didnt leave that impact it should have of being a pre historic story. Perfect example is Games of Thrones what ever camera technique they used it gave the perfect color and texture tone to the scene that actually looked like Medival and Bronze age ..... Unfortunately we indians only measure quality in tearms of melodramatic over emotions and salman kind of action

When I first heard about the new Mahabharata through a friend who raved about it, I mentally visualized a gritty "real" Mahabharata - something like "Bharat Ek Khoj". Then I saw one episode and it was such a let down. It is not horrible per se, but as Sam said, after watching Game Of Thrones, it is even sadder to see the difference in quality.

I really hope that TV is able to emulate the courage and sophistication of old serials like Bharat Ek Khoj, Byomkesh Bakshi, or even Surabhi.

Show real history and show India the way it really used to be. Now add special effects and some mythological aspects on top of this reality, not on top of glamorized version of history.

Bharat Ek Khoj .... absolutely great example ... ,,,, or even chanakaya remember ..... they still had that old texture and presented history as it should .......

I was afraid that I would be the only one who felt this way ... I am relieved to know that I am not the only one.

Yes, thank you! I had completely forgotten about Chanakya as well.
