For people planning on getting tv's from abroad, here are some tips:
1. Make sure you have a bill of the tv you're buying which you can present at the customs counter. The reason for this is that customs officers tend to over-value the product you have got and without a bill, you won't have any say in its valuation. Also, countries like thailand have a VAT refund policy, that you get by producing the bill at the airport while leaving the country. So make sure that you have a duplicate, because you will have to give the original at the Vat counter.
2. Try to get a packing of a lower model box, and the billing done accordingly, as the officers never look inside the box.
3. Most customs officers are open to some sort of settlement. Just play along and you might end up saving some duty.
4. For 46'' led's or more, be sure you have appropriate transport as they don't fit in the boot or the backseat of your average car. This maybe an overlook-able point, but trust me, you don't want to be standing in front of a terminal with an LED in you trolley, waiting for a truck.
5. Some companies have international warranty, which is applicable in India, so do your research accordingly. Don't take it for granted that your TV in India is without a warranty.
6. Be sure to book extra baggage allowance with your airline in advance if you think you'll exceed the limit, as the charges of extra baggage if you book it in advance are a fraction of what you pay impromptu at the counter.
I hope you find this helpful.
