For people planning on getting tv's from abroad, here are some tips:

1. Make sure you have a bill of the tv you're buying which you can present at the customs counter. The reason for this is that customs officers tend to over-value the product you have got and without a bill, you won't have any say in its valuation. Also, countries like thailand have a VAT refund policy, that you get by producing the bill at the airport while leaving the country. So make sure that you have a duplicate, because you will have to give the original at the Vat counter.

2. Try to get a packing of a lower model box, and the billing done accordingly, as the officers never look inside the box.

3. Most customs officers are open to some sort of settlement. Just play along and you might end up saving some duty.

4. For 46'' led's or more, be sure you have appropriate transport as they don't fit in the boot or the backseat of your average car. This maybe an overlook-able point, but trust me, you don't want to be standing in front of a terminal with an LED in you trolley, waiting for a truck. :p

5. Some companies have international warranty, which is applicable in India, so do your research accordingly. Don't take it for granted that your TV in India is without a warranty.

6. Be sure to book extra baggage allowance with your airline in advance if you think you'll exceed the limit, as the charges of extra baggage if you book it in advance are a fraction of what you pay impromptu at the counter.

I hope you find this helpful. :)

For point 3, i would like to add do not try to bribe a customs officer to avoid the duty unless he asks you for a bribe first. The penalties for getting caught initiating a bribe are quite significant nowadays.

As for the international warranty, it depends on a lot of things. For eg. a Panasonic Plasma bought from U.K. will be eligible for international warranty in India, one bought in Thailand, will not. It depends from location to location and product to product. You just have to check the respective site for details.

Thanks AK47..
Any special precautions in terms of packing while bringing in a 40" or 42" LED TV from abroad. Will just the original packing do?
Planning to bring one from Bangkok next week..Any suggestions on the store/place in Bangkok to buy from?

Thanks matbhuvi. any suggestion on my other queries:

Suitcases will also be scanned on arrival. Check-in suitcases will be marked with white chalk post scanning if they think you are carrying dutiable products. Have a wet towel handy to wipe your suitcase clean :) before approaching customs. Any electronics in hand luggage that incurs duty will get screened and you will have to pay duty.

The good folks at Adelphi, Singapore will under invoice in "katcha" bill if you request.

Once I was bringing back a Rega Planar turntable, Delhi customs told me that they can give me a "discounted" duty on duty paid without receipt. How much I laughed! :) I would rather pay duty than bribe the bastards.

If you have enough time in Bangkok then try a place called Farat(not sure of the spelling) which is like the Gaffar of Bangkok. You'll get dirt cheap deals over there and its full of Indians so they'll guide you better. About the packing, the original packing is sufficient although its a safe bet to get it plastic wrapped at the airport. Also, if you go to Farat, try and get your TV packed in a lower model's box as you'll save on some duty. And a 42'' should fit in a normal sedan in the back seat or the boot if you drop the backseat so arrange transportation accordingly.

Cheers

Hi,

Can I check in my 47" LED TV while travelling from London to Mumbai in Air India?

Air India website does not specify the dimension of the check in baggage for London route.

I called the customer support for clarification & got 4 different versions of it.One executive says it should be less than 23 Kgs irrespective of size, the other says it should be less than 62" but not sure if that is the sum total of l+w+h.

Size of the box is 9 x 43 x 28 in inches.

Problem is Im travelling alone,in case the air lines refuses to check in I would be in deep trouble  or Should I book a cargo for it?

Request your help on this.

No one refuses a baggage to be checked in, unless it contains prohibited items. The only thing that any airline does is charge extra for large size/weight baggage.
So your TV (any size) would surely be checked in. Just be prepared to pay extra (just in case).

Air India website says :

"The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both must not exceed 107 inches. Moreover the linear dimension of each piece should not exceed 62 inches"
This for travel through US,for UK no information is available.

Can you let me know the quote when you get it? A friend of mine got a quote from a freight company around 1.5 GBP per kg and 25GBP additional for the service charge per shipment.

Hey buddy,

I'm going through below cargo movers:

Cargo Shipping to India | Excess Baggage to India | Container Shipping to India - Delhi | Mumbai | Ahmedabad | Amritsar | Bangalore | Calicot | Chennai | Cochin | Delhi | Goa | Hyderabad | Kolkata | Tiruchirapalli | Trivandrum

They are charging a little extra ~500 for TV + some extra stuff but since my company is paying I do not mind.

I am also planning to buy a tv from europe but would be going for the 40inch models led models as they are lighter ! The TV in europe are so much cheaper here as compared to India !

Cheers
