Top 75 RD Burman Hindi Albums

Teri Kasam
The romantic songs were a great hit in my all boys school. Two friends sang the duet - Ham Jis Raste Pe Chale in a talent contest. Another ‘elder brother’ used to sing Ye Zameen Ga Rahi Hai in the evenings.
The melodies of these songs are evocative of a more carefree , innocent time. Personally I think Amit Kumar sang some great RD songs. There is an earthy vulnerability in his voice that seems very apt for some of the songs he sang.

Amit Kumar rendered many amazing songs. He's extremely talented- only flipside is his mood which went against many producers and music directors.

Bade Achche Lagte Hai, Roz Roz Aankhon Tale, all songs from Love Story, Apne Apne, Romance, Lovers and may more

So what’s the best RD/Rafi combo song of all time?

Let’s talk the No.1.

I’m going to get you to say what the No.1 is. There can be no hiding from admitting RD’s greatest album. The top 75 here is a total sham to miss it out.

Looks like everyone is overwhelmed with your superiority of knowledge here and want to yield to you with a deferential " Pehle Aap"

I would love to say Arj, I really would.

So I want to approach it till it breaks free of the lock it’s been put under.

What are some of the best RD/Rafi duets? I’m interested in the responses as that’s where the truth shall emerge.

@Bhim Bhai this is a discussion forum, not a quiz contest. You may or may not agree with the tastes of other FMs, but we cannot put members through this endless series of teasers. If you liked a particular song a lot, you are welcome to share your choice with others - calling someone else's choice a sham is not in keeping with the etiquette of this forum. So, please, let us end this guessing game and move forward constructively with other interesting observations. Thank you for your understanding!

Considering its the Boss's Birthday today, Which one will you be playing ?

Starting with Dil padosi hai today !

I’ve been listening to this live performance by group of students (vocalists as well as instrumentalists) from a music academy in Pune. They sang 85 RD songs to commemorate his 85th birthday! A close friend is one of the singers. While we largely listen to the originals, I also dig amateur live performances on YouTube from time to time. The enthusiasm, the nerves, the effort as well as the spontaneity - they all make for interesting listening and watching.

The case is that people want to collect the rarest and most coveted RD album on vinyl. So it won’t be mentioned in order to not bring attention to it.

I have asked members here a question and there is no response. I am doing my job.

Came across this on youtube . Love the immersiveness with which RD dances. Asha Bhosle is also great and versatile. Truly one of the most innovative music director & a fun loving singer.

‘’What Mozart was to classical , Hendrix to rock , Miles Davis to jazz , RD Burman was to hindi film music ‘’ - Ehsaan Noorani (of Shankar Ehsaan Loy )

Incidentally we have a niche group of RDB fans here in downtown and just few weeks back we watched the excellent Brahmanand documentary (both of them ) in a 7 hour marathon session.

The Art Institute of Chicago sometime back had conducted an audio visual program on Indian psychedelia which featured a fantastic mashup of some of RD’s background scores as well as tunes , playing in a state of the art setup. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Although not Hindi , but one of RD’s life’s best works was the music for the Bengali film ‘Rajkumari’..
Four songs from the film were reused by him in Hindi, all of which were super hits and remain in huge popularity today :
- Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewani ( Ki Je Bhabi Elomelo )
- Pyar Deewana Hota Hain ( Gun Gun Gun Kunje Amar )
- Yeh Kya Hua Kaise Hus ( E Ki Holo )
- Kya Janu Main Hoon Kaun ( Tobu Bole Keno Sahasai )

The original bengali cast the evergreen Uttam Kumar and Tanuja.

There was no LP release for the film, only a two song 78rpm shellac , which remains one of the rarest and most expensive collectibles for a RD collector. One shudders to think what would have happened if an LP did exist of this film.

RD’s oeuvre in bengali (especially non-film), which still remains mostly unheard by even his non-bengali speaking fans worldwide , is regarded by many as richer , more daring, innovative and experimental than his corpus in Hindi. There are many songs he composed and sang in bengali which he never attempted in Hindi because they were way too experimental and would never fit in a mainstream hindi film structure.

Anyway , apologies for the rant.
