Topping TP20 tripath 2020 amplifier (versus NAD C320BEE)

...
again, i have heard the Topping TP20 drive Usher Be718 (notoriously difficult speakers) in a large 200-250 s ft. living room to very satisfactory listening levels. Yes it lacks the grip in the lower end with the Be718, but the Be718 is NOT designed to be used with low-power amps. It was still a very nice sound that it produced. And if you don't want much loudness, and if you pick your speaker with care, it'll be perfect.
...

There's a hack/tweak documented in diyaudio (and suggested by Arjen Helder) which involves adding some capacitors on the input side of the amp. Apparently, this goes a long way in taking care of the amp's lack of grip in low frequencies.

This sounds like a PSU thingie ? Charging capacitor banks to provide stored reserve power at the call of duty ... ?

cheers

I don't think that's even a question. The DAC has to change. There are many good options including the Musiland DAC. But putting a tube buffer in front of a DAC that is already unable to extract the last bit of detail will result in a sea of mud. Bad idea!

I agree. I was also looking at the Musilands. I could not find any good reviews on the US 01 model that they have, apart from some one-liners saying that it sounded brighter than they would have liked. The 02 version got better reviews. I don't want this thread to become a comparison between DACs, so maybe I'll post in another thread whether anyone has compared the two in this forum. I remember some DAC thread on that in HFV sometime.

Putting a tube buffer will not necessarily muddy the sound, if the buffer is built to do what it should - impedance matching and introducing a bit of tube warmth into the audio chain. Yes, putting it in front of an already muddy DAC will result in chaos, as you point out :D

Thanks,
Jinx.

Apart from replacing the DAC, which I am now leaning towards as advice for friend, has anyone played around with a better power supply for the Topping? Linear instead of switched? Though reading the electrical theory behind the two, a well-made switched supply is supposed to be much more efficient than a linear one, with no effect on final electrical output. Of course, well-made is the key...taking all the standard electrical steps to isolate and reduce the switching noise.

Have you checked out Arjen Helder's Buffer Amp (12AU7) stage, Improved TA2020 Amp and SMPS supply?

I was interested for sometime, but I lack DIY skills even if it means finding a simple enclosure, so I skipped :o

Yes, I did, thanks for the tip. Am skipping it for a similar reason, not because of DIY skills but because I have very limited time currently and I cannot devote that to creating enclosures and crimping things.

The SMPS supply looks more promising, though. The problem is, I can't ask someone to buy it unless I can give them a plausible enough reason whether the change would be audible. So, thought I'd ask the forum if anyone has had experience with Topping power supply upgrades.

Keith,
That would be an interesting option to look at. However, I don't think that there exists a (good) one in the budget price that my friend is aiming for. Do you know of any?

Do you want to DIY? Edit: just saw the earlier post. ok

This one has a reputation.

On the side, but this is in my pipeline for next year...

Yes shud be fine... I heard8.2s

are you planning to buy 8.1s? I presume you'r buying them used. The Topping is tiny enough for you to unplug it and take it wherever to test them with the 8.1s to make sure they work well. all the best!

The 8.1s are floorstanders I guess, so better sensitivity. Heard the tp20 with Wharf 10.6 and they sounded ok at about 12'o clock.
Sridhar, I guess you need this as the tp20 doesnt do it with your 9.2s.
Good luck and as psychotropic said, try to audition with the tp20.

Thanks guys for the responses.I feel the Topping has not realised its full potential with the aiwa speakers. So I just want a pair of good bookshelves which won't cost a bomb.Demo or used i won't mind.AV Zone tells me that CA
S30 is stopped now.And they don't have any MS BS under 10k. I have asked for the quote of Wharf 8.1 from Grand Cinema.Yet to get it.I don't really know where i can get used BS in Chennai. And i don't want them from Ritchie street.

@iaudio -The 8.1s are BS only.

cheers

don't believe everything that cressida av zone says. isn't there another cambridge audio dealer in chennai? home talkies i think. try them out.

My friend's going to Hong Kong, so asked him to get me either a Topping T20 or a Muse MU-40.

Think, he can manage to get a Muse since it uses SMPS instead of toroids as PSU. The weight 'should' be less. Dimen: 11" (L) x 6.5" (W) x 2.5" (H). Price on the NET = @ $ 120 + shipping. SHOULD be a lot less in HK retail outlets.

BTW, the Muse model claims 90W x 2 with a Tripath 2022. T20 is 20W x 2, with Tripath 2020 chip.

Equivalent Topping T60 or HLLY T90 would be heavy to carry back .... both > 6 kgs. Can't burden a not-so-close friend ... can I?

Any quality issues with Muse???? or go the tried and trusted way ...
