1. Budget.

55k 40" -46" size (basically whatever fits my budget)

2. Viewing distance.

9 feet - 10 feet

3. Sources/inputs such as HD DTH/consoles/stand-alone media players etc.

HD DTH and mobile phone using DLNA

4. Preference for plasma TV/LCD TV/LED-LCD TV.

1st LED-LCD 2nd LCD TV

5. Preference for brands.

none

6. Willing to purchase it from the grey market?
no

7. Ambient lighting conditions of the room.
3 windows, so it is well lit, can use curtains to darken the room

8. Any other feature you are looking for such as 3D support on the HDTV, DLNA capabilities etc.

Looking for the best Picture quality in both HD and SD(as most of the channels are still SD)
I've seen people watching SD channels stretched on HDTVs. Is there no option to change aspect ratio? or is the option available on DTH STB? cause the content should be in 4:3 , Black bars on both side is OK. Is there a fix for this?

3d is not required. DLNA is a must. And TV has to be wifi enabled as it is quite far from the router, for which i believe i'll have to buy a USB Wireless LAN Adaptor some thing like this UWA-BR100 : Internet TV Accessories : TV & Projector Accessories : Sony India ?
Using Skype, youtube and web browsing is also in the plan.
Is browsing a good idea on the tv? will it be used or be just a gimmick that a person gets bored of in a few months?

I highly recomend 50 inch semi hd plasma as ur distamce is 10 ft and u will mostly watch stb.......tru full hd is original br disk..that will be hardly used as u said...
and u also mentioned u can control ambient light.......
so at 55k u will get 50 inch semi hd plasma...
if u have an inclination towards full hd.. 42 full hd plasmas are also avilable well within 55k from samsung and panasonic

if u dont like color palate of plasma..go for sony/samsung full hd 40 inch lcd/led as per ur liking...........lcd-led 40 inch full hd from sony willbe costlier than ur budget.then u can try toshiba or panasonic they have 40 inch full hd lcd-led within 55k.
sony bx40 full hd lcd what i am using is 48k in showrrom and 38k in gray...just a reference....
but look for best picture to ur eyes not gimmickal fetures what the showroom guys will tell u.
experiment plasma/lcd/lcd-led side by side with same sd/hd channles and ur personal movie files(very very high quality recomended)
demo is very very neccesary

yes browsing in tv is a super gimmick.dont go for those feutures for an extra cost...go for biggets size and picture quality only..u can have other dedicated devices such as media player and laptop for those feutures.........
panasonic has wifi by the way even in 42k range 42 inch models......dont know support or in built device though...
gr8 to know u live in ranchi..i am in tatanagar

If you are looking for good pic quality models from sony and samsung should be your choices. You will get samsung models with that price range and features.
But if you're free to extend your budget you should check out EX650..it got new x-reality engine which produces superior image quality than tv with bravia engine 3 like BX/CX models.
I will advise you to stick to samsung/sony cause they got SPVA panel while panasonic,lg and toshiba use IPS panel. SPVA panels are capable of producing higher contrast ratio and deeper blacks than IPS which will reflect in superior pic quality of SPVA panels.

Suggest to draw the curtains and go with Panasonic 42XT50 will beat all the LED/LCD tv's in the same price range. Suggest to demo SD and HD across all the tv's you select and then decide. Remember to demo a plasma always turn down the lights in the store.
All the best.

For 55k you will not get any "decent" LED TV in 46". You will have to go to 40-42" size. But you will get the Panasonic HD-Ready 50X50 that will exceed all LCD/LED priced as high as 80k. If you insist on LCD/LED, then go for Sony 40NX520 or Samsung 40EH5000 or LG 42LS3400.

Browsing/smart apps, etc. is a fad that washes out faster than you can bat an eyelid. I have never ever used the feature. Forget YouTube. Unless you have a 4 mbps connection, the streaming will stutter to the point of exhasperation.

Yes, I tried it out these just for fun but never used it. DLNA is something that I use for streaming video from laptop to TV.

if a tv is equipped with Full-array without local dimming and another one is an edge lit without local dimming, which TV should I fall for?

Both are even stevens but edge lit model may be a little better. Don't go by technology and what the definitions say. Do a demo and decide.

@thekorngear

Full Array backlighting without Local Dimming is useless, which is why you see Samsung use this "gimmick" to confuse and fool customers. 99% it's gonna be worse than the Edge LED model as Full Array without Local Dimming models use less LEDs than Edge LED

Panasonic 42XT50
Panasonic 50X50
Sony 40NX520
LG 42LS3400
Samsung 40EH5000
Samsung D5000
Samsung 40D5500
Samsung 40ES5600

thanx for the suggestions, i will go to the stores on saturday and take a look

So i went to the shops. My budget has increased.
i liked sony ex650 for 64k. what also impressed me was panasonic et5d 42' for 67k.
now the picture quality of sony seems better ? but i'm not sure... what do you guys say? PQ of which is better?

another thing, the guy at the panasonic shop used a wireless keyboard with the et5d. he used it to control the tv , and also type etc. can wireless keyboard be used with the ex650 too in the same way?

thanx , and what would you answer to my previous question post #14?

picture quality is very very perception to ur own.take what u have liked.but still I say a plasma is better than an led in terms of picture...
it can give u near possible quality of a theter like color palatte..aginast led which very much gives a overbright tv serial like color palatte

off course take what pleases your eyes.

oh by the way a belkin is highly highly recomended along with ur V guard
