hello,

my room size is about 20 by 12 and i have been using a 5.1 system with a Yamaha HTR 2064 receiver and when i bought it a few years ago it came as set with 5 yamaha speakers and a passive sub.

while i wasnt thrilled with the sound but since it is was a sparingly used room i liked the package price and went for it.

now i have just installed a projector in that room and possibly will be using the system more often.

looking for recommendations on how best to upgrade.
thanks and appreciate your time and help.

Hi Jfk21....

Good morning :)

The first step to upgrading your HT experience is actually free. Proper placement of your speakers and setting levels correctly is critical to having a cohesive surround sound field.

1) Does the AVR come with some kind of room calibration or is it a complete manual setup.

2) If it is manual setup, then please recheck that under mentioned things have been set correct :

- Check that all cables have been correctly connected. That is all are in phase. Any speakers being out of phase will cause a sound suckout. And the whole sound will be unimpactful.

- Check distance of all the speakers to your listening position accurately, and feed them in the amp. This will make sure that the avr delays the sound of closer placed surround speakers, to arrive in sync with the sound coming from your farther placed front speakers. This will lead to cohesion of the sound field.

- Check the levels of each speakers with a free smartphone db level app. Place the phone on level surface with the microphone pointed in the direction of speaker you are measuring. Now play any speaker level test track from youtube, and set level of the speaker manually to reach 85 db. Do this for all speakers one at a time.

Now that all your speakers are level matched, time aligned and in phase, they should sound as intended. Please let us know if this makes any difference ?

If not then the room is too big for the output of your system. Probably changing the avr will be the first step in upgrading the system. Then add speakers as per budget in stages. All the best :)

Hi

The Yamaha system you have is the entry level one and would support basic performance....

Since the HTR2064 has a subwoofer out option....you could look at changing the speakers and adding a powered sub woofer....the experience will change automatically....

There is no need to change the AVR if you are satisfied with its power and features.....

Once you change the speakers to either Jamo, Boston Acoustics, Wharfedale, Taga etc...you will experience something different and better....suggest you audition before purchase...

Speakers which are rated 10 - 100 watts at 8 ohms or 10 to 140 watts at 6 ohms load will work effectively on the HTR 2064.

Subwoofers are many and you need to decide on the size, output and budget....the subwoofer which has the lowest frequency to 20hz or closest is the best....read all specs

if you are open to pre owned speakers due to budget issues, you can look at For Sale By Owner section or HifiAds or OLX...lots of speakers available...i may have a couple of friends who may want to sell their existing speakers...Mumbai based.

All the best...

thank you guys for your informative replies.

amazingly, this morning my yamaha amp has developed a problem, it comes on but i have to increase the volume really high for some sound to come from it.

so for now i will have to get that fixed (hopefully at a low price) before i move ahead.

i live in south mumbai, any recommended technicians who i could go to for fixing my amp?
there is a music mart at walkeshwar who i had used years ago.
thanks

@efernandi1 i would surely be interested to know what your mumbai based friends have to sell.. do let me know, thank you

Within a small small budget of 25 to 30k ....taga 5.0 is a great upgrade. Fs will give a decent bass. Adding a sub will enhance it further.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
