Hi,

Since today morning, my 46inch Samsung 5 series TV screen has issues with the whole screen being 95% white and only 5% detail visible in the background. I checked the cables for some loose connections and everything seemed alright. I checked the menu and the setting are like earlier. Does anyone have an idea what would have caused this?

Can you post pictures. Seems like a panel problem. Is it in warranty.

Check with the default video test picture in settings video menu.

Are you able to see the menu or is that also visible only in background .

Panel is mostly kaput and needs a replacement.

How old is your Tv? My old 5 series LCD conked off the same way after exactly 3 years.

Not necessarily the panel is kaput- it just might be one of the reasons. Check if it's the same when u play a DVD/blu-ray, cable etc.

Try resetting to factory setting. If that doesn't work it might be that some part on the circuit board of the panel has conked. Check with the service centre, there is a possibility that the circuit board can be changed for a much lower cost compared to the complete panel.

Here is the video of my TV. I did not have time to edit it.

First 3 minutes of the video you will see me do some menu changes....last 30 seconds you will tata sky 100 channel

1) As Samsung gives only 1 year warranty and does not offer AMC (thats what they told me) - it is not under warranty
2) I was told that a visit by the engineer costs 1800 - pls let me know if its true and if so let me know if you have an engineer who can come and have a look without going through the official channel
3) how much does changing a circuit cost and how much does changing a panel cost?

Thanks again for all your posts

thats bad...
yes samsung engineers do charge Rs. 1000/- (not 1800 as quoted) for a visit and diagnosis of your equipment. Incase you pay for repair charges this amount will be deducted from the final cost.

coming to your problem..it seems to be the panel problem, not sure cos I am not an expert in this. A 40" LCD (not LED backlit) panel from samsung costs anywhere between 20k to 35k (as quoted by the service centre in my case). so if thats the case go for a new TV.! changing a part on the panel circuit board should cost any where between 5k-10k. Best option is to get the samsung guy to check your TV, get a quote for repair and negotiate on the final charges depending upon what they quote.

Now here is the catch:

1. Most older samsung models do not have a separate circuit board for the panel i.e. the CB is a part of the panel assembly and incase any one goes kaput, the whole panel assembly has to be changed - as in my case.
2. the new replaced part (panel/CB/panel+CB) carries only 30 day un-official warranty. Incase your TV faces any more problem after 30 days of changing the part- you are helpless.!

Thats the reason I ended up selling my TV at a throw away price of 6k (bought for 60k used for 3 years), bought a Sony Bravia and swore never to buy any samsung product again.! not to scare you but to state simple facts.

The engineer did confirm that its a panel problem. So I just created a new post regarding the resale value of my TV..is it zero or will I salvage anything out of it? Please reply to that post..Thx

dont think its zero, should be able to salvage atleast 4-5k.! but guess its too early to jump to conclusions. let the engineer give you an estimation.
