Vinyl Resurgence?

It was so decades ago!

I do suspect that early days of digital recording were just bad. My disgust with a "digitally recorded, digitally mastered" classical LP, which was very expensive, was such that I only playted it once.

Hi all,

Recently ordered the BAD album Vinyl by Michael Jackson from Flipkart, it was a SONY import edition. I had ordered it in the hope that it will sound better than the CD, but to my dismay, it sounded no where near Audiophile. Though the master is Digitally recorded, it seems the Vinyl was cut using a bad sounding cassette tape. No doubt the Vinyl lived upto its album title, but I became poorer by Rs.1350/-

Do we call this Vinyl resurgence?

The original Bad LP was pretty good. Are they now making lemons to cater to the "Keeping up with the Joneses" crowd? :o

I doubt that. I think 'Bad' album was digitally recorded with high resolution and bitrate than audio CD standards.

Apart from that dynamic range of vinyl and 'original' CD is good. One can check dynamic range in following database. So don't throw away original CDs/vinyls as some new remasters may not be good. DR Database.

What do those columns and numbers mean? The higher the better It seems like ...

Gobble,
Numbers from 1 to 20 are given from reference decibel level to peak decibel a track has achieved/measured (Red is bad, Green is good). 1st column is average dynamic range of the whole album, 2nd is the track with weakest dynamic range, 3rd is the track with most dynamic range. Small blue circle with 'i' in the album column has info about DRs measured. You can search your album in upper right corner of the list. Pretty usefull info to know that care was taken while mastering the album. Do pay attention to last column if the source was lossy or not.

Hi Murali, I ordered non picture BAD album. It seems sounding alright. Is it same which says - "exclusively remastered 180 gram audiophile vinyl pressing". Another label mentions - "includes bonus track leave me alone"

Hi Om,

Is it from flipkart? I had ordered the Picture disc, 25th Anniversary Edition, SONY Import. but no mention of Audiophile pressing etc

I've sold off my dud Bad picture record to a friend who "must" have it despite knowing from my mouth that the sound isn't good:) I'm grateful for such friends:lol:

Yes, it is from flipkart but non picture imported version.

Hi ruebensem,

Unfortunately we read them after our purchase.

Good one! However, I bought Thriller, normal black vinyl on Epic label. Sounds just like the album title.

I hope MJs albums are not mastered on the basis of its title: bad, thriller...

I had 'Dangerous' by sony Music and it was a well pressed record. Since I was not a MJ fan, I sold it . But I could not complain about the quality of the pressing

Not a MJ fan at all. But picture discs are a no-no. The additives ensure that the vinyl is compromised. I sold an Aqualung "25th anniv Ltd edition picture LP" with a VHS tape along with the CD for Rs. 1000.

No regrets, no tears goodbye, don't want you back, I'd only cry again.

Hi Friends

iam posting what i felt about the new vinlyls which are released ( Bollywood )

They read as "Digitally Remastered" , they sound nothing more than a CD,

so in my opinion its not worth paying that much money and yet buying just a different format when you can get the same sound from CD at much lesser price

However the older vinyls which i have like Sagar, shaan, Jagjit Sing Gazals Karz, Disco Dancer , Betaab, Disco Dewaane etc sound really very nice and sound more line vinyl ...crisp and different

Cheers
