Want to buy home theater system

I have the same HTR as in YHT 298 - RX-V373 or known by another name HTR-3065, it plays from the USB so no need to worry on that count. It could be USBs fault, as it needs FAT16 or FAT32 formatting, bigger USBs sometimes come with a different format.

Regarding blu-ray, you need to check whether you would need 3D down the line. else DVD player would be as fine for music, I had checked both DVD players and blu-ray players and could not find a difference when CDs were played.

Thanks ValueChanakya. If you don't mind, could you let me know the pricing, the month & year you purchased Yamaha 298 box and from which shop and place.

I checked the Yamaha India web site and didn't find any product as YHT 397 BR and also there is no mention of AVR HTR- 3065. Not able to understand if this is a correct, updated and supported product of Yamaha. Please help in anybody has any more info.

Team,
Can I have some clarity to the above ?

No feedback yet from anybody.
I am most probably going to buy Yamaha HT either 196 or 298.
May I have feedback from a user about it. I heard Yamaha 298 is with active woofer i.e I can change bass. Is this what is called active subwoofer ? Does it add any value to listening ?
The price difference between 196 and 298 is 10 K. Is it worth to pay 10 K for so called active sub woofer, a USB port & 4K pass through ?

One more thing I wanted clarification is about Mic. Can I connect my existing mic to 196/298 ? I heard Yamaha provides a mic with this bundle HTIB? Is it so ?

Team, need your inputs asap to make my purchase tomorrow.

Yamaha sells YHT 397 in the US, please check Yamaha US or Amazon.com, you will get the details there. HTR 3065 is equivalent model of RX-V373 , part of the latest +73 models of Yamaha, tuned by the same team that tuned AS300-500 series which the forum members like so much. If you read the downloaded spec sheet you would find a mention there about the equivalent documents.
Find and download new US and international Yamaha audio and video home theatre components catalog, you would get details.
Do not buy 196, it is quite old model.
That said, you would not get warranty in India on YHT 397 and you would need a step down transformer for 110v so be sure that you are fine with it. 298 is an equivalent model with the only difference is that you get single speakers instead of dual speaker satellites.
Active subwoofer has a build in amp, which is over and above the amp of AVR, which means you can connect it to any AVR and it increases the power available to you. Passive subwoofer takes its power from the receiver.
Mic that Yamaha provides is for caliberation purposes YPAO, it is not for general use.

Onkyo 3400 and 3500 have only passive sub-woofers. Since your room is fairly large, a powered sub would be better. I recently purchased an Onkyo 3500 and notice that the sub is a bit under powered + the receiver gets extremely hot after 20-30 minutes of use. Otherwise it is a reasonably good system for its price.

if you may have to increase your budget to about 45k, you can consider Denon 1612 + Boston XS5.1 speakers - excellent combination.

In the systems from Sony, LG, Samsung etc., please beware there is no HDMI input - hence you cannot connect other devices such as set top box, media player etc. to your receiver.

Hope this helps

Finally, I purchased Yamaha YHT 298. Waiting to get some HDMI and optical cables to connect TV and gaming console. Does quality of Optical cable or HDMI cable matter in terms of sound effects ? What brands of cable to go for ?

Quality of cables matter only if you are sending the signals to a large distance like 10 meter or more. For small distance like 6 feet any cable can be used. I'm using belkin optical and hdmi cables costing around Rs.600/- and they are very good in terms of build quality. I am also using Rs.150/- HDMI cable bought form ebay and they also work fine. The problem with the cheap ebay hdmi cables is that they are nylon braided and they are very stiff. This can be a problem when you want to route the cables properly. Also they are a little loose where as the belkin fits more firmly to the hdmi port.

How much did the 298 cost? And does it not come with the required cables for the speakers or do you need special ones for better sound?

also let me know from where in mumbai did you buy and for how much

I got it @Hypercity @30K. The cables for speakers that came with the box were ok for my room in present set up ( FL, FR , Center and Subwoofer on one table ). But I may may have to buy new cables if I want to place it differently mounted on walls. Not sure what type of cables to go for.

I purchased Chinese optical cable to connect STB to AVR. I have already the Airtel provided HDMI connected between STB and TV.

Watched a couple of 007 movies on HD channels. The sound is amazing. But I do feel that the sound quality is enhanced during advertisements as compared to when the movie is played on the HD channel. Please let me know if there is anything to better it.

which dvd player did you buy along with the 298. Also i just have a normal tv. So are therc to av cord's available or do i need to buy up hdmi rc to av cord. How long are the speaker wires approx as i intend on getting the speakers to the 4 corners and have approx the same sized room like you have quoted earlier. There is this other guy in vile parle that's offering it to me at 31k. But i guess he'll get to 30k. But emi's not available with him too.....do lemme know about the emi thing.
