3D passthrough in AVR does exactly what the name suggests - The hdmi input can accept 3D signals and pass it to the TV through the hdmi out. 3D signals require higher bandwidth than ordinary 1080p signal and so there is a new version of hdmi 1.4. All latest avrs are 3D ready. It doesn't mean it will convert 2D to 3D. If you buy an old avr without 3d support then you will need to connect the bdp directly to the tv.
