Mods / admins , what is rational behind stopping a member from editing his/her post after 24 hours ?

I have started a thread for st30 , and now i want to edit it to update or even regularly update with latest news on firmware, post about related apps etc so that new members will find it easy to get info from the first post. Or even edit my older post for some typo.

Almost all forums i have registered to , doesnt have this rule.

Please kindly explain the rational behind it. If its for deals thread , then i think it is valid , since few days later the dealer might change some info or meddle with info already posted. but why for other category ?

IMHO , kindly remove this 24 hour block.

Another feature I would like is the ability to rename thread. There are many threads with grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Can be a nuisance, but many forums find the need for it, and some have learnt the hard way to impose it. Imagine a disgruntled member who decides to delete all their posts...

You might be able to already. Edit your opening post, and click "Go Advanced." In vB forums, the opening post title is also the thread title: I don't know if the same applies here. Obviously, this would only apply while the edit window was open, but, often, one notices one's own mistakes just after hitting the submit key

Which is exactly what happened here. We ended with a number of threads that were disjointed as some members went about deleting their posts. I am sorry, but editing of posts will not be allowed after 24 hours. HFV, as is now, is a good forum, and we plan to keep it that way.

If you want to add some information, just add another post. In terms of grammatical mistakes, HFV editor has a grammar checker, so I don't understand how you can make mistakes. In terms of other silly errors, review the post before hitting the submit button. If your post is long, write it elsewhere, edit it, spell check, and then copy and paste.

If your need for editing is genuine, write to the mods who will take care of it. I have edited a number of posts as well as titles for many members.

Cheers

Just because someone wanted to delete thier post , doesn't equate to many opportunities editing poses .

Expirience members can post review , add updates to it , As in my case , i can add information on the firmware available and possible changelog.

Some member turning rogue among thousand is rare. Even if so , dont they have the right to remove thier post if reported ?

I really like this forum and regularly contributing to it, and i feel if there is editing , it would serve for a better thread , for updating regularly.

Its just a request. Hope you guys reconsider it.

Added : P.S there are many disgruntled users against team-bhp , for thier retarded registration procedure , i included. Dont have a account there , not planning to have one in future either

If possible, atleast first post in the thread should be allowed to be edited forever. Because, the thread starter's requirements change, if it is a hotdeal or group buy thread, the negotiated value and number of items change over time and need to be updated.

My 2 cents.

Venkat has told of his experience. I can talk about two members of IndiaMike who turned vandal. Both destroyed threads or made them into nonsense. One was an ex-moderator. Venkat's been pretty straight that this has to be lived with: I can say, from experience, that it is worth it.

All of these things seem like stuff that only happens rarely --- until it happens.

I am a mod on another forum and I can vouch for venkat's concerns. Sometimes it feels too stringent and dictatorial but there it is - win some, loose some.

There can be a need for the first post of a thread to be updated from time to time. E.g. pricelist and related threads. If someone has to find out the cost of speakers, he has to go through a huge thread to find out anything. If the first post can be updated, this will be great.
Maybe it can be on request, when there is need to update a thread, a request can be sent to make a specific post editable for another 24 hours. There probably will be 5-10 such threads that will need an update. The owner can consolidate the updated and do it say once in a couple of weeks. Mods can take a call on whether this is worth it or not, if such requests are becoming too often, mods can stop this feature all together.

We should also have a backup mechanism. I saw that the wayback machine on archive.org has backups, but the last date is May 12th, 2011, almost an year ago. Did we try to use the archive.org to restore some of the posts that were deleted. The said user's last date was april 18th 2010 and there is still a backup of hifivision.com on archive.org on Jan 31st 2010, so most of the posts can be recovered from there.

Naveen, if the world was full of good people like you, forums will not need any moderator. It is the odd mad elephant that can destroy years of hard work. We have to constantly deal with pride, jealousy, politics, and insane amounts of human stupidity. One would think no one would bother with these in a forum like HFV, but it is, believe me, no better than Indian politics. I am not even talking about the huge mountain of spam that we filter everyday.

Doors, as I said before, the mods would be happy to make changes in any thread such as price lists, etc. Just write to the mods, and it will be done. We did try the back-up, but the back-up was also over written after the threads were destroyed. Thankfully, we were able to stop deletion of posts after some time.

Do NOT ask for change in rules. These rules have been set after a lot of pain and anguish, some of which brought HFV close to closure. Whatever other kind of help you all need, we will be happy to provide.

Cheers

Anyway can you start a new section , so that we can start a thread with post , which is supposed to be updated in original thread. WE will copy the entire first post or whatever post , and make required changes , and mods can simply copy paste it to the requested post.

In this way , you guys can preserve the integrity of the forum , at the same time , OP`s can edit the first post or X post on what they wish.

Again these updates are not going to be on a daily basis , but on a monthly , so no of request will also be low. At the same time , it will allow members to edit thier post.

I for one ,want to edit the ST30 thread (can be found in my signature) , first post with relevant , recent information.

I think many will also wish to do the same.

Hope this can be done. Also this category can be made exception to editing after 24 hours.

I think editing description makes sense when a member is selling a lot of items at once. One would lose track of the which ones are sold and which are not. Ditto for the price thread as already mentioned.

I would vote for some facility to "append" to the existing description, something like this:

EDIT: Item xxxx is sold, yyyy reserved, these are the items remaining: aaaa, bbbb, cccc

Let me give you some simple practical solutions:

1. If you want, just rewrite the first post, send it to the mods as a Doc file, and we will replace it.

2. If you want to add another post with late news just add it to the thread. We will give a link to the post in the first post, asking people to read all linked posts before making a decision. If you go through many forums, this is what is followed.

I don't see how it can get simpler than this.

Cheers

May be like wikipedia, we can give a small link to see the history of editing done in that post.

What about a feature like review mode in MS Word which keeps track of changes

Rule can be - thread/post cannot be deleted.
Contents can be modified. But the modification will be visible (possibly in red color).
If a line/word is deleted, it will be displayed as stroked.

This way, modifications will be visible in the post at the same time, posts cannot be deleted completely. The change also will be visible. If possible add a tool tip which will show edited date when mouse over;)

just my 2 cents.
