Hi,

What is the Equalivent of 75 db on an Onkyo Receiver.

I am using an Onkyo SR606 AVR, listening to Music and Movies. I have used the audyssey auto to set-up it up.
Unlike other brands of recievers which have volumes in measures of DB's my onkyo has just numbers ranging from 0 to 62

My question is how do I determine the 75 Db mark?

If I am not wrong, you can change how Onkyo AVR's display volume. When you go into Setup menu, select Miscellaneous and then Volume Setup. In Volume Setup, change Volume Display from "Absolute" to "Relative" and then the AVR should display the volume in dB. I have tried this in Onkyo TX-SR607, 608 & 876 and they all have this option. Not sure about the 606 though.

Having said that, in Onkyo AVRs, 0 dB is reference level volume, which is plenty loud. As an example, my listening levels are usually -25dB to -20 dB. I have never gone even to 0 dB cos I fear that if it doesn't rattle my windows badly, it sure is going to bring screaming neighbors to my doorstep!!

If you mean 75 dB in real world, then I think you would need a SPL meter to measure it!

the kinge - thank you for your post.... unfortunately the 606 does not have that option where you could view the volume in db's... i am not sure how i should set it up... i went in to setting, speaker setting - to level calib and kept everything at 0db.... for left, right and center +3 and surround +4... i am doing this just randomly without any logic or science... i will really appericate if anyone can help me out here.... my speakers are diamond 9.6 for left right and 9 CS for center..the vendor told me that the right match for 9.6 was CM...but due to space constraints i had to settle for CS..

While watching movies, i need to keep the volume really high 55 on the AVR to hear the dialogs... i am sure i am not doing something right..

any experts from bangalore, are welcome to come over to my place to have a look first hand..

pls help

What source are you using? How have you connected it?
In the audio set up, there is an option to bump up the centre channel to +2db...and so on.
Try that. Dont have access to my avr right now to be more specific about it.

my source is DV-610 pioneer DVD player this is connected by HDMI cable
i am also using an old DVD player as dedicated CD player (this is a substitute till i get my CD6003.... i have connected this via a Co-axial cable (Brandridtch)

Harryanthony, volume level of 55 in Onkyo is fine. That's the volume I use for watching movies and listening to music. My speakers are also similar to yours - I have a Wharfedale Diamond 10.7 (9.6 in its earlier avatar) & 10.CS. The level calibration of my 10.7 is -6 dB and 10.CS is -2.0 dB. I initially used Audyssey calibration to automatically set the levels but was not happy with the output of center channel. Audyssey had set it to -6 dB as well but I increased it to -2 dB. Now it's quite fine for me.

I strongly recommend you to run the Audyssey calibration using the Audyssy microphone and see what settings it provides. Then you can increase the volume for center channel alone if you're not happy. And make sure you use a camera tripod with Audyssy microphone.

Thank you for these tips Sir !

I will run the audyssy again to see what comes up...
