Planning to buy a lap top over the weekend as my existing HP Pavillion has conked off. Confused between Dell and Lenovo...

Also any feedback on whether I should go for the model with dedicated graphics card or without?

Thanks

Lenovo x230 with ips panel and extra 6/9 cell battery is what i wud buy.

HTH
If u are into travel photography i.e

Sent from mobile on a crappy keyboard. Pls excuse typos.

I am using Dell N3420 (14 inches, i5 3rd generation, 4gb, 750GB, Nvidia graphic card) for the past one month.

The price difference with/without graphic card was Rs.1500.

I bought it for Rs.31000 from a trader in Delhi who brought it from Thailand. It comes with one year international warranty. So far satisfied with it. My son plays NBA2K13 on it without much lag.

I'm a Thinkpad person myself, but the new XPS series from Dell look really really nice! The XPS 12 convertible for example is the best design I've seen when it comes to a ultrabook/tablet hybrid, and would be especially useful if you travel a lot and use your laptop in cramped spaces such as in a flight.

As far as graphics power is concerned, as long as you make sure you have Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics (nothing lower) or the equivalent from AMD, and if you make sure to get a SSD drive, you should have enough performance overall and in terms of graphics. HD 4000 integrated graphics gives you the same performance as a mid-level graphics card from a year ago.

The decision should be based on the following questions.

Do you want to carry it frequently, size and laptop category?
Do you want to game and rip blurays with it?
What is the price you want to pay.

Since I wanted a laptop replacement I purchased a dell i7, 8gb, 256gb ssd, nvidia 540 2 gb graphics, 1080p b+rg XPS L502X. The later ultraportable models have heating issues.

Both dell and Lenovo are good. I would prefer a full HD ips display any day, a core i5 basic configuration. The ram, ssd etc can be upgraded any time later. You can also look into Sony vaio.

if u really like a great value for money spent, asus is the best.
i have used dell, ibm aka. lenovo and hp laptops and other computer products and i can say with confidence, asus is the best, if u r not bothered about brand name etc.
they have some great laptops with DOS, which means u r not paying anything for an OS. and ur dealer or any geek friend will be more than happy to install the OS of ur choice.
i have the asus transformer 300, asus laptop m70sa( a desktop replacement bought in 2006 in the USA), an asus laptop in the office, a desk top with asus mother board & grafix card built by self and other asus products like routers etc.
i will prefer an asus to anything else any day.

I would prefer Dell or Lenovo. Too many bad experiences with HP! I see too many of their products failing. Hard disks, motherboards, batteries, the works all failing prematurely!

Yes I agree. I do think the DVD drive has become redundant now. I haven't used mine in my laptop even once in several years. USB drives have far more storage anyway.

If you want a business-friendly easy to use Laptop, then buy a Dell.
If you want a versatile-all use laptop, buy and Lenovo.
However, I would anyday pick Dell over Lenovo, due to its amazing build quality and ergonomics.
A Dedicated Graphics is always handy, to suit you needs in the future, the price difference is not big.

Not so sure that a 'brand' based approach is what is called for. If you decide on a budget and a configuration - surely there won't be more than 2 or 3 options that fit in - across brands. Then you can choose one.

For e.g. let us say you want an SSD of at least 128 GB capacity, a Quad core processor with a 14 inch monitor having resolution of at least 1400 * 1050, you are going to end up with around or less than 10 models - again depending on budget. From there you can choose models.

The specific brand - in my experience is only relevant when it comes to warranty. If you are buying in India, getting stuff serviced in itself is a big chore. So, I would trust the configuration and go for it. Peer reviews (more than expert reviews) are your friend here!

In fact I would trust peer reviews more than expert reviews even for audio equipment :)
