Hello all.
I am on the lookout for buying a 40" 3D LED tv. the models i have been considering are the following, LG 42LW5700, Samsung 40D6600 ans sony Ex720.

i went to the LG shoppe in Koramangala and viewed the 3d demo, i was quite impressed because of the flicker free 3d specs and 2d to 3d comversion of a hd channel. but the bezel was not so attractive as the samsung model and the value he quoted was around 89k(he said he would give the final price if i would book) although on infibeam its available for 75k and moreover it does not come with inbuilt wifi. wifi dongle would cost 1.9k as per the salesman. the magic motion remote is also packaged with the tv. I did notice light bleeding at the corners when i asked him to put it to black bkg but the salesman said its normal. is it so?

The samsung D6600 was quite a beauty although i did not view the 3d. the 2d colors were absolutely impressive. and more over it has inbuilt wifi. but the 3d specs is not included in the package and it costs 4k each(absolute bummer). at the samsung shop in jayanagar the sales guy said they were giving the 2.1 audio bar costing around 23k free with the tv(tv value at 94k).minus the audio bar the discounted price was just 74k. he did not give me a final offer but said he would give one including the specs...more over the wireless keyboard cannot be used to pair with the tv to browse the net.

i have not yet viewed the Sony ex 720 properly but at an earlier date i did find the blacks were not as perfect as the samsung...

i am torn on deciding the model. please advise....

What are your requirements ?
Is 3D important ? Do you watch a lot of HD content including Bluray movies and Blluray 3D ?
2D wise the EX720 is better than Samsung and LG. 3D wise LG is the best, Samsung slightly better than Sony.
And the colors being impressive on Samsung, well Samsung TVs usually have vibrant colors that are not a good reproduction of reality. So to the average consumer it would look "better" but actually isn't.
Anyways the gamma as well on the three TVs is more or less similar once calibrated.

The black levels of Sony should be equal or better as they use a SPVA panel.
Some may feel samsung has better blacks ,because of samsung uncontrollable dimming of the backlight, the moment there is a whole black content on the screen or if majority of the screen is black the backlight is dimmed.

Yes, all reviews show EX720 having better black levels than equivalent Samsung and LG models. :) And as a result, higher contrast ratio of around 4500:1

@kittu1977 sorry the 40D6600 was at 84k minus the 2.1 audio bar(just 10k minus on 94k) and the LG LW5700 at 75k.

@avmaxfan well watching hds and ripped blurays is the foremost activity. 3D's on the lg does look better because of the lightweight spectacles.

I visited the Croma at Jayanagar on Friday and heck the salesman there would not even let me have a look at the samsung 3D, he kept on going on about the LG Tv. even less said about when asked about the sony model. the sony model at croma was being quoted at 74.5k

i visited the jpnagar croma yesterday and the quotes for LG LW5700 was at 85k and the sony ex 720 was at 80k. There was not even one display item of the samsung 3D led tv.

At the entrance there is a 8 series samsung LED tv connected the video of people entering the shop. you could immediately notice the colors were rather not life like but rather vivid and bright. at the entrance there was reddish stand which was displayed orangish color.

The sales guy was rather not eloquent about samsung led tvs saying samsung panels are getting problems and people are complaining so advise lg or song. and one more thing he said was that 32" 3d led tvs of sony and samsung have been removed as they do not give good 3d rendering. this was definitely news to me as the websites of both samsung and sony still have the 32" models..

Well i can't say about samsung 32" 3d tv,but yes the Sony 32" EX720 has not so good 3d.Its mainly a excellent 2D tv with 3d has a feature.

Regarding the samsung 8 series its a one of the better tvs out there, you can judge a picture just by seeing them in showroom settings.

If you are buying the Sony you may well buy it from the grey market/sukh sagar mall gandhinagar.
You will loose the 1 year warranty, but you mayl be saving significantly.

No i am not saying judge the tv by showroom settings i am just pointing out the live video feed attached to the tv would show the unnatural color replication...

Even I am going through the same process and shortlisted the same models. I have a mixed feeling now, but I may prefer Samsung 40D6600 over LG and soney.

Good
LG - smart remote, glasses.
Samsung - compatible with all movie formats, has an inbuilt dongle for net.

Bad
LG - Cannot play all movie format, doesn't have a inbuilt dongle for internet
Samsung - Doen't have smart remote, glasses would require battery/charge

I have a quote of 82k for 40D6600 with audio panel, CD's, 2 glasses etc and other promotions offered by the shop.Done a good bargain :-)

Regards
Gopa

Hi,

>>LG - Cannot play all movie format,
Can you explain what are the movie format that are not supported by this LG model, but same is supported by samsung?

Thanks
Laks

hi recently bought Samsung d7000 46 inch from Singapore along with recharge able 3d glasses (3 rechargeable and 2 battery operated).

to start with the 2d picture quality is out of this world, still fine tuning the setting but any one who watches hd on this tv is blown away.

about the 3d part again it is best u can get, as u get full hd in both the eyes and not like lg passive glasses which halves the quality in both the eyes.
but now there is catch to this too when i watch 3d through the rechargeable model of 3d glasses(model no ssg 3300) u wont find any flicker in to your eye and u will enjoy the experience but when i switch to battery operated 3d glasses i can see the flicker taking place this does not hamper the 3d quality but after a while its not comfortable for some.
i suggest any one buying 3d tv to go for active 3d (anything thing above 40 inch to get the a proper 3d effect) but get the latest 3d glasses to enjoy the experience

end of the day dont forget samsung produces most of the panels which are supplied to all the company specially sony

I bought Samsung 51D550 plasma and got 2 ssg-3100 battery operated glasses free. The 3D quality is EXCELLENT. No noticeable crosstalk or flicker. The glasses are so light they almost seem like passive glasses and the tv produces such a bright image during 3d that the experience is so gr8. Even the tint of the glasses is not so much.

Unless someone tells you that it is active shutter, you might even mistake it for passive glasses.

Note: Even the new 2011 samsung led tv's perform pretty good for 3D. I had a demo of 46D6000 and 55D6600 leds before buying my plasma and the 3D was surprisingly good even on the led and there was no noticeable crosstalk...

I heard from lot of people that you can not watch 3d more than 1 hours with samsung active 3d , i also expirinced the same.I don't know how you found it good.Have you tried passive with LG cinema 3d.what is your expiriance?

Hi
When it comes to 3D LG uses passive tech where the images for the right and left eyes are simultaneously displayed where the ..so for each eye you get half of the total pixels available ...where by samsung and Sony uses active glasses where by images for the right and left eyes are sinked with shutter glass where the 3d images Full HD 3D.when it comes to depth and leaping effect samsung 3d are great but it is not free of cross talk.where by lg passive glasses are inexpensive and flicker free....but over all when it comes to picture quality design and vibrant color reproduction samsung stands out.after analyzing most of the brands in these category I went for Samsung 40D6600.

@Krshjack. I think the question to what you replied was asked more than 6 months ago. I don't find any reason for you to bump the thread.

It depends on the individuals liking for the brands, but when comes to 3d ,active 3D of Samsung delivers better 3D effect with great depth and leaping effects and it also has a wide viewing angle .Iam the owner of both smashing and LG Tv s ,when it comes to quality and style LG can't beat samsung's performance .but only one advantage with passive 3d of LG is the glasses are cheap and you don't have to charge it.in active 3d sinking of images for the right and left eye takes place in different intervals in lightning speed so each eye gets the full hd for both the eyes.in passive the image for right and left eyes are delivered simultaneously where by quality of the image is reduced to half ..anyway other than 3d rest is fine with LG.

Samsung 46D6000 and similar series are highly prone to failure. 3 of us in our society bought it and all 3 developed issues with in 10 months to 2 years. Fortunately I got full refund as it was with in warranty period but it took 2 months. Others got partial reimbursement/paid upgrades. I am reluctant to go for Samsung after that. These are very costly items and much better standards are to be expected. I am looking at LG and Sony models in 47" now. If one is interested in 3D, LG is simply hard to beat given passive glasses . Active glasses are painful, hard to wear for longer duration, costly and difficult to maintain.
