The Big Four are now well entrenched, and Philips has established itself too, if not as a market leader but still a significant player. Sharp is now the only major brand with ZERO votes!!

Come on, any Sharp owners out there at all?!! Or has the Sharpness gone Dull?

Let's see how the results of our poll tally with actual flat panels sales in India (2010, Q2) It's surprising how Panasonic, which is the unsurpassed leader here, brings up a dismal 5th position in units sold! And Videocon, which has hardly any votes here, sells higher numbers than Panasonic. Remember, these are only flat panel sales.

On second thought I have nothing against the Sony or Tata Sky!Both provided excellent service. Its those folks all over the world manufacturing the odious and dumb content that I don't like.

+1 and it seems to be getting dumber and dumber.

I have a Sony and I'm not complaining. :)

offtopic.gifReally, I don't get this. Why do some people - and I don't just mean ajay124 and KDM - get off on labelling a worldwide industry's output as 'odious' and 'dumb'? Does it make them feel intellectually superior? (no offense intended here, I just want to understand this viewpoint:))

Dumb is relative. The majority of people who follow 'dumb' programmes do not consider them dumb. The fact that a majority of the paying public (if they do not pay the TV producers directly, they pay the advertisers) want these programmes is why they are made in the first place. It's a simple case of demand and supply. If the intelligence levels in the viewing public were higher, they would demand and get more 'intelligent' content.

I can accept people who just don't like to sit in front of a TV, but to say that all or even most of the content on television the world over is dumb is like saying blondes are brainless, not only is it taking generalisation to absurd levels, it simply isn't true by any yardstick.

How are 'Planet Earth' which has showcased the beauty and grandeur of our planet in a way never seen before, or 'Time Warp' which takes us into a whole new dimension just by slowing down time, dumb? Or, coming to fiction, I quite like 'Lost' (which may be nothing to do with the 'real' world, but exploring themes and ideas outside the narrow confines of reality does not make it any less riveting.) Then there is '24' which packs more action in 24 hours than any actual counter-terrorism agent encounters in his entire career, but does the hyper-reality of its timelines render its vision of a tech-driven world in any way 'dumb?' Nope. Or take 'Big Bang Theory' - getting sitcom laughs out of the principles of advanced theoretical physics is not a job for the weak of brain, I assure you.

Coming to Indian TV shows, (I can only give examples of shows I myself like watching) how is 'We the People' on NDTV 24x7, or 'Highway on my Plate' dumb? The latter specially is NOT odious at all - it is rather deliciously aromatic, in fact!

But these examples do not prove my point. To some people, these programmes may indeed be dumb. But honestly, of all the hundreds of channels out there, and thousands of shows, and with all the niche programming that is made these days, they can't find a few shows that live up to their lofty standards of braininess? That is just dumb.

Interesting to see the market share, suprised to see samsung & lg behind Sony in flat screen tvs, considering samsung & lg sell both lcd & plasma. Where as Sony only sells lcds and there lead will be even higher if they factor in the grey market sales.

Bought a Sammy Q9 plasma in 2007 and have just paid for another Sammy 58PC6500 on weekend, so i am happy with Samsung and the service given. My Q9 never has given any problem and when i went out to buy a new set, Sony was not even in the discussion as they don't manufacture plasma and their big size tv's are way too expensive in India.

I thought samsung was the market leader

Samsung is the market leader in worldwide sales.

In India, too, Samsung was the market leader in 2009:
There is strong competition among the three major brands in Indian flat panel TV market, which have a combined share of 70% or more of shipments. Samsung had top unit share in 2009, but dropped to #2 with a 22.7% share. LGE had top unit share in Q110, but dropped to #3 with a 21.1% share.

Interesting to see the market share, suprised to see samsung & lg behind Sony in flat screen tvs, considering samsung & lg sell both lcd & plasma. Where as Sony only sells lcds.

Plasma is a very small 10% of LCD/LED sales worldwide, in India it would be a fraction of even that. So the effect is negligible on overall market share.

Having reached three figures in votes polled, Samsung has come from behind to take the lead at this point.

Considering Samsung was a poor fourth in the early stages (all the Samsung owners seem to have been on a holiday they got free with their sets!) it is quite a turnaround.

Everyone else seem to be more or less consistent, with Panasonic still neck to neck for numero uno position, and LG and Sony being evenly matched for third place, with Sony just pulling ahead recently. Philips rounds off the top 5.

(BTW the 100th voter was satinspace)

WOW. Koreans are ruling our market and Sony and Panasonic are enjoying lion's shares too. Why wouldn't they ? (Almost) Everyday they print page long advertisements on newspapers, don't they ?

In the Indian TV market today all top 5 brands in the world but SHARP are selling well. How many people knew SHARP invented the LCD TV after researching in their Laboratory for 25 years (since early 70s !) ? They supply panels to SONY Bravia too. Some of the SHARP CRT TVs I've seen have had superb video clarity. Look at the poll results of Japanese people (image attached). But in India, SHARP's marketing/advertising team is very weak. So zero awareness. Also, people never know about their existences and never buy a JVC, Hitachi or SANYO LCD TV .

So, MY VOTE GOES TO SHARP, the Japanese hero for giving us this LCD technology @ our doorstep. So, Sharp's sharpness is well and alive !

I have a sharp 21" CRT bought in 1996 which still runs great. Never had one single problem with it. Later bought a LG 29" in 2004 which also never gave any headaches. But i have not seen any CRT (even Sony) that could beat the Sharp "CINEMASCOPE" clarity as it calls. My vote for Sharp (First in the poll) as i find it better than my LG CRT.

Hi all, i recently bought a Videocon Full HD 32" VRL32FBM to be precise.
First of all thanks to the site, i got a lot of input to find the best LCD for my use.
The videocon LCD has a quality which needs to be seen to be believed. this is my first LCD but i would suggest everyone to check out the display quality of this model b4 u buy ur next LCD.... i compared with a lot of full hd LCD's none could compare and thats the view of my other geek friendstoo. They too have hd at home and they cant believe the quality of this LCD.

My first TV was a Videocon 14" B&W CRT bought in late 80s. Videocon also makes Sansui and Hyundai CRTs which have high quality picture. Had no idea about their LCDs. Your quote seems +ve. Happy viewing.

Recently my friend was is Japan roaming many cities. He mentioned seeing Sharp Tvs everywhere right from Hotels to bus stands and private homes. Sony/ pansonic were hard to found in very selective places. Checked the clicked photos & got surprised. A altogether different scenario from Indian Market.

I too chatted with a Japanese who told me that Sharp LCD is colloquially known as AQUOS in Japan and it's as popular in Japan as Maruti is in India.

Yes I think Sharp should seriously beef up their marketing and service like Panasonic has declared recently.Making good product is just first step.
We have Optonica (called with Humour as 'Aaptu Naka' in Marathi means 'do not bang on floor' ) SHARP 21' CRT tv CS5115DX with detachable speakers from late 1993. It was joint venture of Kalyani Sharp I think at that time. Bought on suggestion of the Dealer. It is still running well. :clapping:
After few years of purchasing had installed original Hyperband internally against general practice of external box prevailing at that time for 800 rupees. Changed fuse once and 2 tuners in last 4-5 years. PQ is very good. It does not hurt eyes even after prolonged viewing. I always keep Color level below 50 %.
The local mechanic told not to give up this TV till it dies and now a days CRT TVs are not of good quality. Picture seems to go out from 2 sides, may be some ICs have become weak. But I do not want to tinker with it.
I have voted for SHARP.
I have another Monitor TV LG M237WA in bedroom attached to my Desktop for couple of years.

@DruShra

I have seen SHARP ads on TVs only in Optonica days and never recently (I still remember one ad in which two Japanese scientists conduct research in a Laboratory with a Mandarin music played at the ad's background). My friend's Optonica too lasted for 15 years so recently he bought another SHARP TV. My Uncle bought bought a Solidaire TV in early 90s but it is no more. If your SHARP is still lasting, it must be a GREAT TV. ENJOY ! :clapping:

But sadly SHARP does not concentrate on advertisements. Ever seen a SHARP Ad on TV or newspapers? Nevertheless, Sharp Corporation makes affordable high quality electronics for avid video fan !
