Why do people buy expensive TV (and not a PJ)?

The life of a LED TV is 5 years at the best and a 55 inch TV would cost ~ 1.5 lacs so why do people buy it? Why not buy a good projector for the same price and get a 120 inch picture and just keep changing the lamp every 3 years for about Rs 10,000 - 15,000?

Any insight?

Thank you,

I think the simple answer is that of maintaining and a dedicated room for the projectors. The room ambience and least amount of light should be maintained and most of homes double up for both living as well as watching and hence you cannot expect a dark room. These restrictions does not apply at least to LED TVs.

Yup... Very precisely... 90 -95% of the population dont have the luxury of dedicated rooms is one of the important reasons...

The usage cost if a projector goes beyond just the purchase price. It includes cost of installation, cost of the screen (and it's installation), adequate power protection for the PJ, cost of keeping the room appropriately dark while usage, etc. There's also the effort of maintenance and usage: waiting for proper cool down, not switching it off on and off randomly (loss of lamp life) etc. Above all, I think the biggest cost is having an appropriate room for use. I'd personally always prefer getting a 40 or 46 inch TV as a simple plug and play solution.

A good quality LED/LCD screen can also deliver a more intense image with more vivid colors and less pixelation in fast action scenes. To get the same image quality in a PJ, you have to look at twice the cost if not more. This is in spite of the fact that PJ manufacturers claim 1080P and all that.

The most important thing is the room size. To view 100 inch screen properly, you need a large room that many people do not have. In addition, the room has to be blackened completely and all that. You have to set up a environment very close to a cinema hall. An LED/LCD can become part of your living room and you can watch a movie seriously late in the night.

Cheers

I have both from over 4 years and will give you the reason why?
You can't run a projector on the trot for 7 to 8 hours on a daily basis It will get overheated, life of parts would get impacted due toheat. The cost of replacement bulb is high. Also i use PJ only for watching HD movies and stuff not for regular Tv viewing.

Spares and service is expensive for PJ. TV is easier to manage. Watching a big tv has its own advantages, the experience is different and you can keep it going on and on for hours. TV can be watched in a bright environment, for PJ need to keep the room dark all the time for best PQ.

Also you can switch the TV on and off 10 times in a day with no issue whatsoever without worrying about gaps. Do that to a PJ and see how fast your bulb goes as every time you start and turn it off there is an effect on the bulb and you can't keep switching it on and off, need to give a break and time interval. If power goes nothing will happen to the TV, using a PJ and power going off would impact the life of bulb badly as it would not cool down.
That's why most folks use UPS for PJ to ensure they get sufficient time to shutdown and cool on power failures.

Given some examples that came to my mind, hope it helps.

And I dont want to watch everything in big screen. Like my regional news, comedy channels - basically anything that is non HD and most of my regional are non HD.

Surprisingly, no one is talking about awareness. Some people that I spoke to (including me) were not aware about the PJ world so invested in a big TV but now I would never waste money on a LARGE TV

I see folks have stated about the ambient light issue in living room .. they should give a visit to this website once
Projection Screen by Screen Innovations - HD Projector Screen

Also about the lamp life .. remember there are LED projectors too .. with ridiculously long life ..

Also you don't have to watch it on big screen always .. if you don't like it big .. then you can reduce it ..

Thanks

All the reasoning are perfectly right but we forget the fact that PJ is never meant for casual, living room watching. Let it put it straight. You can do anything you want to do while TV is playing but you can do almost nothing else while watching PJ (the way it is intended- in completely dark room) except may be texting and munching. IMO, though they do the same task, they are meant for entirely different requirements. TV= living room. PJ = Home theatre. Using TV for HT or PJ for regular living room viewing is simply a compromise, the extent may differ. A slim TV adds to the decor of living room too. And there's no better experience than viewing on 150" screen if its HT. So the answer is those who buy expensive TVs may not actually need a projector.

Actually I've been planning a dual PJ setup in my room. One decent PJ with all the trimmings for HT and a basic LED based for regular "TV" and 720p watching.

Controlling the ambient light is not an issue. Feasible?

Possible but I am not sure if it is advisable. I know one FM who has exactly the same setup. LED PJ for regular office use and a good LCD PJ for HT use in same room.

Why don't you simply buy a 40" or something TV for regular viewing. You don't have to switch off the lights. There are lot of things people do while casual "TV" watching and why to fumble in the dark.

one more important factor, WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor! hanging a screen and PJ in a non-dedicated room apparently is a SIN in decor. Plus, they dont operate PJs so it means its our personal device so becomes even more to convince the investment!

@ Santy - I'm thinking along these lines primarily because of the cost factor.

Firstly a 40" would mean a downgrade from my old 42" thats nearing retirement. And a TV means I have to invest in a screen for the PJ. A decent 40" costs around 40k+ I guess? So, 40k + screen + PJ. LED PJs go for much cheaper. Still, I'm open to suggestions!

Shuv,

You are right it is better to go for an LED Projector.

Infact after I purchased my Epson Projector I have stopped watching TV(I have an LG 42 and 47" TV)and even I am planning to add an LED Projector to my setup to watch all the TV and DVD movies.

I was planning to purchase an LG 75U LED projector as and when it is released in India, but now in US they have already released LG 85 U so probably will have to wait till this year end for the prices to drop and will then purchase it.

Narenkum,

I am planning to purchase my first projector epson hc 2000. Should i consider LG 85U! bcoz of lamp hours. Do you feel LG 75 or LG 85U suffice the purpose of watching HD blurays with 700 or 1000 lumens as well as DVD, TV or its good to maintain 2 projectors one for tv and for occasional blurays . Will these leds pj give any rainbow effect. Since you already own an Epson projector advice me to which one I go with.

Agree 100%, and if possible more
