A big HELLO to all you awesome HiFiVisioners!

I recently purchased a Yamaha AS-2000 that is now mated to my Wharfedale Dentons. The speakers were purchased from HiFiMART.com. They were initially paired with my Advance Acoustic MAP 101 integrated but lack of power was clearly audible with the MAP 101 gasping for breath. Time for a change...

& then comes the all powerful silver knight - Yamaha A-S2000. I have the silver edition driving the Dentons, which unsurprisingly are finally flexing their frequency range. Full-throat at that.

All of my digital content (FLAC, WAV, MP3 & even CD transport) is being played from my Popcorn Hour C-200. The fidelity is good but I believe it can get better. I like the Oppo BDP-105 & I believe fits my requirements (Optical/COAX Digital & USB Asynchronous ins apart from the obvious features). My question is - Is there any other alternative to the Oppo that anyone is aware of in the price range it commands?

Also are there folks who have the A-S2000 paired with these Dentons like I have? Would be enlightening to hear your experience & thoughts.

Thanks for your time,
Aaron

I believe Oppo 105's primary objective is the video part and the secondary is audio. So if you are not planning to use its full potential of both video/audio then it does not make sense to invest so much of money just for the audio purpose. There are other alternatives at the same budget for your requirements of DAC/Source/Transport. Knowledgeable FMs might pitch in with suggestions.
As your collection is more towards digital (FLAC/WAV/MP3) files I think investing in a good DAC will make more sense as you can use your C-200 as the transport using its coaxial/optical out.

Thanks on the revert mate.

The Oppo BDP-105 is surprisingly a capable audio player because of the universal disc transport system that accepts & plays - CDs, DVDs, DVD-Audio, SACD et al.
It also has a great DAC - the ESS Sabre chip. What I loved is the fact that it can also function as a great DAC.

But yes, Im open to other alternatives. :-)

Have you checked this OPPO HA-1 Headphone Amplifier

this is DAC + Preamp + Headphone amp with same sabre chip.

So you can use it in three way and you are saving lot of money.
Because you can use it as a preamp and attach it to Yamaha's Power amp section and see the variation in sound.

Anyway in my view ,by playing thru media player , you are doing injustice to such a nice amp and speaker. Source is utterly wrong.

How about the Audiolab 8200 CD player available on HIFI Mart? Or for that matter the CDQ which I believe is supposed to be slightly better? Both are regarded quite highly.

OP already likes OPPO BD player and he was asking for comparable product in the range. audiolab is no comparison to Oppo in my opinion as far as DAC is concerned.

Pick up that M1 clic musical fidelity player in the sale section..since you are obviously into FLAC, WAV file playback.

Getting your source correct is the key to good sound. Stay away from video products when you setup a music system.

Thanks a ton people! Really appreciate the responses. They have been enlightening to say the least.
I agree with you Dheeraj on my current setup. Hopefully I will remedy it soon. :ohyeah: & yes I will check on the Oppo Headphone amp for sure!

More questions to follow....

Hi,

From where you purchased the amp?

Cheers

I purchased it from Mozart Music World, Ahmedabad.
They screwed up on the colour though. Wanted black but they sent me the silver one.
Still love the amp though!!!!
