Yamaha R-S500/700

Thank you S.P.Krishna for the quick reply. My first preference was a Marantz integrated amp. However, the prices for Marantz are quite high on ebay (most of them are imports) and I do not seem to find Indian prices for most Marantz equipment. .

E bay prices are twice to the current prices for any brand. Marantz sterio receiver is around 26K and their Int.amps PM 7004 is around 47K and pm 6003 is around 21k, PM 5004 AROUND 18K. As you are in Hyderabad you can speak to Mr. Haranath Babu of SBT corporation who deals with Marantz . Cell No. 9866400666 , 040-30606666 and 040-23324539. Yamaha AMPS are laid back AMPS and musically will not match to that of Maranz .You can blindly go for marantz amps.

Regards

Thanks S.P.KRISHNA, will contact Mr. Haranath. Marantz are good amps, but I like yamaha sound and I could match it with my cassette deck as well (also Yamaha). However I disagree that ebay prices are twice as much. I could find AS500 for 24K and RS700 for 32K ($617), whereas on amazon(US) RS700 is $600, so it is roughly the same price you get in the US. Also India price includes shipping and customs.

Pawanharish have you confirmed whether Yamaha RS500 are available in India or not?

If yes, how much dough?

rishiguru, I have asked one of my friends in Delhi to go and ask the price in the Yamaha Square in MGF Mall. He is a bit busy at the moment, will get the prices in a few days. I am able to find RS500 for 26K and RS700 for 32K on ebay. I guess these are fair prices for the units that are imported from US.

Do not stress yourself with the review denzong, its not like we are buying equipment worth millions :). I agree to the fact: listen before you buy.

hey, don't even think of pairing Yamaha and MS Aviano 6. I heard from my friend that it's a flop who had tried it already. There 2 brands has different appetite, better not to MIX them. Looks like here you are particular about Yamaha. So let us change your speaker selection rather than amp. Go for some other speaker brands like Tannoy, PSB, MA etc...

This is too big of a statement don't you think. After all remember sound quality is perceived subjectively in most cases.

And also it seems you have not heard Yamaha's mid to upper range audio products. I was fortunate to hear the Yamaha MX-1000 stereo power amp with a dynamic power output capability of 1000 watts @ 1 ohm @ 1kHz per channel paired with Yams's CX-1000 pre-amp very recently.

I am jaw dropped with awe as of now. The sound signature is vibrant & at the same time posses the level of authoritativeness in sound, I think very few amps have.

And it seems I will be fortunate again to hear this combo with Yamaha Soavo floorstanders very soon.

I just believe in that both the companies have different philosophies & thus different sound signature. Both should be respected & revered.

I request you to read this thread before you come to such thundering conclusions : Yamaha vs. Marantz sound??

Thank you ARVASUDE, I was also a bit skeptical about Aviano 6's. I haven't heard them and they are a bit on the expensive side (39K). You are right I am inclined towards Yamaha, I was thus considering NS-555/777s. They have extremely good reviews. People are saying to get better speakers than these you'd have to go 5 times their price. So I'm now inclined towards those as well.

Pl. do dot compare Mid and Upper end Yamaha and Marantz. The thread starter budget is 25 - 30K. In this price bracket only the comparison should be. As far as my listening experiance the top 2 Amps within this price are Marantz & then NAD if RMS is not the criteria to that of SQ.

Dear S.P.KRISHNA, I know that Marantz Integrated amps are good. However, they do not come with a tuner. Also I don't know much about Marantz receivers, I do not want a 5.1/7.1 setup. The one you suggested earlier is a good option, but it is also hard to dismiss RS-500 based on its reviews.

I have auditioned A-S500 and NS-8390, which has a great Nexus, But it's up to you to decide the metal of 8390. But for sure it's a great VFM. I was offered them 13k for pair in bangalore.

Thank you for sharing that experience. 8390s also have very good reviews (not so pleasing aesthetically however). Also I do prefer 3-way setup as opposed to 2.5 or 2-way. Most reviewers, however, are giving very high praise to 555s. I should really audition these first. I have asked my friend to audition 555s for me. Waiting curiously for his feedback.

Hey pawanharish, off topic but since you are so interested in Yamaha gear why don't you check up this thread : HiFiVision : Yamaha Centennial Edition

Don't know whether your decision will change after looking at those extraordinary beauties.:D

Please don't show me things I cannot afford :D. Off topic, there's a Harley-Davidson showroom near my place. I don't go near it in fear of getting sucked into it.

BTW what is the price of 555/777 ???

They are about 24-30K per pair, about $300 per speaker. Very good reviews for this price bracket.

I have a HK3490 high-current receiver (bought couple of years back) that cost me around Rs.30,000/- then. Now it is being quoted around Rs.35,000/- at the indiajbl.com.

A scale down model HK3390 is also available around Rs.30,000/-.

The following is the address at Delhi for HK, JBL & Infinity products.

JBL Studio
Resonance Audio, 5/58, 2nd Floor, Main Shankar Road, Next to Cafe Coffee Day, NewDelhi-110060

I am very happy with my receiver, which has many additional features - digital coax/opt inputs (for stereo playback), dual sub-woofer outputs, pre-amp outputs (if one wants to use external power amp), tape monitor loop, phono line-in (MM), dolby virtual (for 2.1 system), power 2x120w @ 8 ohms.

If you havent finalised your purchase, why dont you give HK Receivers an audition. I am no audiophile, however, HK3490 won me over others. You may check-out reviews for these HK receivers in the net.

Thanks christian. Harman Kardon make good sounding amps and receivers. I was interested in them earlier. But many of the reviewers complained about their reliability. What is your opinion about this (build quality, glitches etc.). I plan to keep the receiver for a long time, that is why I'm opting for a 2-ch with tuner analog system, as this never gets old. Multi channel digital with god knows how many acronyms do not age well. Also reviewers are saying Yamahas (AS,RS series) are built like tanks, and also there is nothing to go wrong in them.
