Sony's BDP-S370- Usb play capabilities- Discussion

The .AVI file format is just a container - the video contained inside the file is MP4, it should play, no?

I think the player just decides based on the file extension, then plays the file if the actual codec is supported..

send me a list of what you want checked by pm or post here, and I'll try to check the rest of the week.

Thanks for the generous offer!! :yahoo:
1) Does it support ntfs? or any other file system not limited by file size (atleast till 20gb ) Try this atleast once even though people say it doesnt support..

2) Does it decode rips with dts-hd ma and dolby true HD?
Try mkv with dts-hd-ma and try the .m2ts(blueray format rips ) with dts-hd-ma..You can download a sample from any of the movies on torrent)

3) Is the mkv playback hassle free?
( Try different fiels if u have a collection)

4) How goos is its internet compatibility, like playing youtube videos etc?
Just test you tube and wat resolution it plays

5) how is the picture quality of the mkv playback?
Yes, i found it a lil lacking, can u test please? the file i tested with was a low bitrate one..

6) Does it play the bluray files its m2ts via usb?
.m2ts(blueray format rips ) with dts-hd-ma..You can download a sample from any of the movies on torrent)

hi sam9s
That helps.. so I can hook up Optical to a AVR but it would work in case of older Audio formats (ie non lossless). If I want to enjoy Blueray/MKV with the newer, lossless audio encoded, then I can do it only thru a HDMI connection carrying audio+video between BDP and AVR... and also in that case the AVR needs to support HDMI Repeater mode...

So a long termish investment strategy would imply buying a HTiB which has a HDMI Repeater AVR...

I seem to be settling for the Onkyo HTS3300.... the thing is not very commonly available in India though.. might just be worthwhile buying it in US thru online stores and getting it over to india.. apparently for items < 25K INR theres no customs...

I think you are a bit confused ..... Let me be straight and simple ..... Optical would only do DTS and DD and HDMI would do DTS-MA and DD-True HD. Now coming to that lossy and lossless thingi, we usually do not refer/use these terms with multichannel audio as it can be both, but generally speaking DD and DTS are lossy and DTS-MA and DD-TD lossless, not that I mean DTS cannot be lossless but usually ain't, as I said they can be both.

So if you wanna enjoy HD Audio (DTS-MA and DD-THD) you need to have HDMI between BRp and AVR (preferably which decodes and not just passes through)

Another thing to note is..... that almost all BR Rips floating online have DTS or DD audio. Rarely you will find a ripper encoding a BR with DTS-MA or DD-THD.

Has anyone tried playing back the HD version of the Big Buck Bunny movie? I've tried a 1080P version that the Sony wouldn't play:

BBB is available for download here: Big Buck Bunny Download

Thanks for the link. I was able to play it, so atleast there is nothing wrong technically with the file. I used the Tversity media server on my oppo.

Try using a media server (popular ones are PS3 media server,Asset, Twonky or Teversity for video) to play it if USB is giving issues, generally would give you better playback options.

I checked with my brother, who has bought a BDP S370. Heres what he tells me.

1. Supports h.264 codec for Video
2. does not support NTFS. Fat32 required
3. for playing MKV files >4GB split using MKV split tool into 2 file.. it will pick up and play them sequentially no probs. bit of a hassle to live with.
4. so far all his MKV have worked..but they are all with DTS encoded audio. No DD-TD or DT-MA

hope this helps.

^You can use MKV2VOB.. it has a setting for splitting files into 4GB chunks.

Oye nice to see you here :ohyeah:

Btw, how much time wud it take to split a mkv file?
And will it reencode or just split both audio and video?
Hope it wont hav av sync issues?

Split mkv using mkvmerge. This can be found in mkvtoolnix. Do a search for mkvtoolnix and dl it. The name is a bit misleading. You can merge video and audio streams into mkv of specific file sizes. Just load the mkv to split, specify 2G as the split size and mux. FAT32 file system has this 2GB limit. I have used 8GB pen drive without problem. Did not try with portable hdd 'cause my 500GB hdd is ntfs formatted. It you play mkv off a dvd then there is no 2GB limit. Here is a standard file info:

HDD has to be FAT32 formatted with no partitions!

Err can you try out wat I say, Just to check it?
Format the hdd completely, delete any partitions,
Make a partition of half the disk,This shud be the first partition, make it FAT32
Make the second partition and make it ntfs..
See if the player recognizes the FAT32 partition..

I have a feeling this shud work..

Can it recognize the contents of the NTFS partition?

No it cant, just checking if first partition is fat32 and other is ntfs, does it recognize Fat32 partition..;)

Oh...OK.
Actually, there needs to be some work around for this, besides the MKV Splitter.

I am wondering whether it can play a 4.35 GB( typical Animal Planet file) .mkv file, written in a DVD. I need to try it out in a local Croma...........before committing myself.:)
